Bioremediation of non-point hydrogen sulfide emissions using bacterial cellulose/activated carbon membrane.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas, characterized by its low odor threshold and toxicity, poses significant challenges in non-point source odor management. Traditional biotechnologies are effective in removing malodorous gases from point sources but they are limited for non-point source odor control. RESULTS: In this study, the sqr and pdo genes from Cupriavidus pinatubonensis JMP134 were introduced into the bacterial cellulose-producing strain Kosakonia oryzendophytica FY-07. This genetic modification enhanced the strain's sulfur oxidation capacity, which increased over time, with an ave

Microbial influence on triggering and treatment of host cancer: An intestinal barrier perspective.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with complex complications that may lead to tumors. However, research on the mechanisms underlying susceptibility to chronic immune diseases and cancer pathogenesis triggered by the inflammatory environment remains limited. An imbalance in the host gut microbiota often accompanies intestinal inflammation. The delayed recovery of the dysregulated intestinal microbiota may exacerbate systemic inflammatory responses, multiorgan pathology, and metabolic disorders. This delay may also facilitate bacterial translocation. This review examined the relatio

Immunomodulatory zinc-based materials for tissue regeneration.

Zinc(Zn)-based materials have contributed greatly to the rapid advancements in tissue engineering. The qualities they possess that make them so beneficial include their excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, anti-bacterial activity, among and several others. Biomedical materials that act as a foreign body, will inevitably cause host immune response when introduced to the human body. As the osteoimmunology develops, the immunomodulatory characteristics of biomaterials have become an appealing concept to improve implant-tissue interaction and tissue restoration. Recently, Zn-based materia

Dual-roles of carbon black to accelerate phosphorus recovery as vivianite.

Carbon materials have been confirmed to promote phosphorus recovery as vivianite through enhancing dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR), which alleviates phosphorus crisis. Carbon black (CB) exhibits contradictory dual roles of cytotoxicity inducer and electron transfer bridge towards extracellular electron transfer (EET). Herein, the effect of CB on vivianite biosynthesis was investigated with dissimilatory iron reduction bacteria (DIRB) or sewage. With Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA as inoculum, the vivianite recovery efficiency increased accompanied with CB concentrations and enhanced by 39 % w

Effect of attapulgite on heavy metals passivation and microbial community during co-composting of river sediment with agricultural wastes.

This paper investigated the effects of attapulgite addition on the physicochemical processes, heavy metal transformation, and microbial community during the composting of agricultural wastes and sediment. In addition, the correlation between environmental factors, heavy metals (HMs), and microbial community was also assessed by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that pile B with attapulgite addition entered the thermophilic phase earlier and lasted longer than pile A as the control group. The reduction in the bioavailability of HMs (Cr, Cd, and Zn) was also greater in pile B, and th

Fe in biosynthesis, translocation, and signal transduction of NO: toward bioinorganic engineering of dinitrosyl iron complexes into NO-delivery scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Iron, the most abundant transition metal ion in humans, participates in the biosynthesis, translocation, signal transduction, and transformation of nitric oxide through its encapsulation in the form of heme, [Fe-S], and [Fe(NO)2] cofactors within a variety of enzymes and proteins. After the review on nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) for the biosynthesis and detection of NO, in this report, we discuss the natural utilization of the [Fe(NO)2] motif for translocation of endogenous NO and the translational development of synthetic dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) fo

Cervical Cancer Induction Enhancement Potential of Chlamydia Trachomatis: A Systematic Review.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) persistent infection is the necessary but not sufficient cause of cervical cancer. Other co-factors are required to induce cell transformation that will evolve to malignant cervical cancer. These co-factors include physical elements, other sexually transmitted infections, and immune response. Chlamydia trachomatis the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection is often asymptomatic but causes various syndromes such as cervicitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and infertility. It is established that this bacterium is involved in cell proliferati

A visual review of the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Being the principal causative agent of bacterial pneumonia, otitis media, meningitis and septicemia, the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major global health problem. To highlight the molecular basis of this problem, we have portrayed essential biological processes of the pneumococcal life cycle in eight watercolor paintings. The paintings are done to a consistent nanometer scale based on currently available data from structural biology and proteomics. In this review article, the paintings are used to provide a visual review of protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, cell wall synth

Case Study: Microbial Ecology and Forensics of Chinese Drywall-Elemental Sulfur Disproportionation as Primary Generator of Hydrogen Sulfide.

Drywall manufactured in China released foul odors attributed to volatile sulfur compounds. These included hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and sulfur dioxide. Given that calcium sulfate is the main component of drywall, one would suspect bacterial reduction of sulfate to sulfide as the primary culprit. However, when the forensics, i.e., the microbial and chemical signatures left in the drywall, are studied, the evidence suggests that, rather than dissimilatory sulfate reduction, disproportionation of elemental sulfur to hydrogen sulfide and sulfate was actually the primary cause of the malo

Biodegradation of drotaverine hydrochloride by free and immobilized cells of Rhodococcus rhodochrous IEGM 608.

Drotaverine [1-(3,4-diethoxybenzylidene)-6,7-diethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline] hydrochloride, an antispasmodic drug derived from benzylisoquinoline was evaluated for its biodegradability using a bacterial strain Rhodococcus rhodochrous IEGM 608. The experiments were performed under aerobic conditions with rhodococci cultures able to degrade drotaverine. In the presence of glucose, the removal efficiency of drotaverine by free Rhodoccocus cells pre-grown with isoquinoline was above 80 % (200 mg/l, initial concentration) after 25 days. Helicobacter pylori infection, oncogenic pathways and epigenetic mechanisms in gastric carcinogenesis.

Chronic colonization of the human stomach by Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative bacterium, is the major cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers and gastric cancer. Recent progress has elucidated important bacterial and host factors that are responsible for H. pylori-induced gastric inflammation and gastric malignancy. H. pylori cytotoxin-associated antigen A is the major oncogenic factor injected into host cells from bacteria and it disrupts epithelial cell functions. Together with H. pylori cag pathogenicity island, it causes general inflammatory stress within gastric mucosa and activates

Antibacterial activity of a competence-stimulating peptide in experimental sepsis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Streptococcus pneumoniae, a major cause of human disease, produces a 17-mer autoinducer peptide pheromone (competence-stimulating peptide [CSP]) for the control of competence for genetic transformation. Due to previous work linking CSP to stress phenotypes, we set up an in vivo sepsis model to assay its effect on virulence. Our data demonstrate a significant increase in the rates of survival of mice, reductions of blood S. pneumoniae counts, and prolonged times to death for mice treated with CSP. In vitro the dose of CSP used in the animal model produced a transitory inhibition of growth. When

Beryllium: genotoxicity and carcinogenicity.

Beryllium (Be) has physical-chemical properties, including low density and high tensile strength, which make it useful in the manufacture of products ranging from space shuttles to golf clubs. Despite its utility, a number of standard setting agencies have determined that beryllium is a carcinogen. Only a limited number of studies, however, have addressed the underlying mechanisms of the carcinogenicity and mutagenicity of beryllium. Importantly, mutation and chromosomal aberration assays have yielded somewhat contradictory results for beryllium compounds and whereas bacterial tests were large

Gastrointestinal lymphoma: prevention and treatment of early lesions.

Gastrointestinal lymphomas comprise a group of distinct clinicopathological entities. Differences in lifestyle and environmental factors between countries could account for the variety in the distribution of the main subtypes: low-grade B-cell lymphomas of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type, alpha-chain disease and enteropathy (coeliac disease)-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL). The possibility of preventing these lymphomas implies a knowledge of their natural history together with an identification of potential predisposing factors. The development of the lymphoid hyperplasia and subs

Experimental lepromatous leprosy in the white-handed gibbon (Hylobatus lar): successful inoculation with leprosy bacilli of human origin.

Leprosy bacilli of human origin were inoculated into a white-handed gibbon by the i.v. and i.p. routes, and also locally into ears, testis and around an ulnar nerve. The animal was observed closely during a period of nearly 15 years and did not exhibit any clinical evidence of cutaneous or neurological disease. At death, a wide range of tissues was taken for bacterial counts and histological examination, and a disseminated and progressive infection was demonstrated. Acid-fast bacilli were found in many sites; their morphological appearance distribution in nerves, and pattern of multiplication

High-level expression and purification of the recombinant diphtheria fusion toxin DTGM for PHASE I clinical trials.

A genetically engineered fusion toxin targeted to acute myeloid leukemic (AML) blasts was designed with the first 388 amino acid residues of diphtheria toxin with an H-M linker fused to human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor. The cDNA was subcloned in the pRK bacterial expression plasmid and used to transform BL21 (DE3) Escherichia coli harboring pUBS500 plasmid. Transformants were grown in Superbroth and induced with IPTG. Inclusion bodies were isolated, washed, and denatured in guanidine hydrochloride with dithioerythritol. Recombinant protein was refolded by diluting 100-fol

Interfacial Interactions between Escherichia coli and Polystyrene Nanoplastics: a Physicochemical Perspective.

Nanoplastics are increasingly recognized as emerging environmental contaminants, yet the physicochemical mechanisms governing their interactions with bacterial cells remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigated the interactions between Gram-negative Escherichia coli and polystyrene nanoparticles (PS and PS-NH2; 100 and 200 nm) using electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Zeta potential measurements revealed concentration-, pH-, and time-dependent shifts in the electrokinetic behavior of bact

Chloroplast reconstitution of heterologous Rubisco and carboxysome enables photoautotrophic growth of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

The model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has a pyrenoid within chloroplast for photosynthetic CO2 fixation under limiting CO2 conditions and its chloroplast is an ideal chassis for engineering photosynthetic modules. In contrast, carboxysomes are bacterial microcompartments that encapsulate Rubisco for CO2 fixation. The aim of the present study was to determine if a bacterial carboxysome or its components can replace pyrenoid and function to allow Chlamydomonas growth powered by photosynthesis. We replaced the Chlamydomonas endogenous RbcL gene with cbbL and cbbS from the chemoautotrophi

CliPME: the clinical pathogenic bacteria mutation and expression database.

The ongoing battle between humans and pathogenic bacteria has fueled rapid microbial evolution. Although whole-genome sequencing (WGS) has transformed the ability to track genomic mutations, existing tools lack comprehensive solutions for analyzing mutational patterns and their functional consequences in pathogenic bacteria. Here, we present CliPME, an innovative platform that bridges this critical gap by combining mutation detection, mutation effect prediction, and regulatory network analysis, specifically designed for bacterial genomics. We develop qMut, a high-performance R package designed

Predictive multi-omic biomarkers for urban zoonotic spillover detection: an integrative review.

Urban wildlife is an overlooked yet critical component of zoonotic disease surveillance, especially in biodiversity hotspots where human-animal interfaces accelerate spillover risk. This review synthesizes five complementary omics layers: Host microRNAs, host-pathogen genetic markers, bacterial microbiome profiling, viromics, and host transcriptomics into a single predictive framework for early spillover detection. Across taxa and pathogen classes, we highlight convergent molecular signatures of infection, from receptor polymorphisms and shifts in MHC diversity to pathogen-responsive miRNAs, h
