[Paranoid personality disorder and criminal offense].

BACKGROUND: Currently, all of the studies that focus on the relationship between paranoia and criminal offenses exclusively concern subjects suffering from a delusional paranoid disorder. However, subjects with single paranoid personality disorder, without any associated delusional disorder, are not uncommon in forensic practice. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the offenses committed by subjects suffering from a single paranoid personality disorder and to compare them with the offenses committed by the subjects affected by a paranoid delusional disorder associated with paranoid person

Varieties of Pathological Self-mutilation.

Pathological self-mutilation appears as a non-specific symptom as well as a specific syndrome. Since psychotic persons may commit horrifying acts, such as enucleation of an eye or amputation of a body part, identification of high risk patients is crucial. Stereotypical self-mutilation, such as head banging and biting off of fingertips, is associated with mental retardation and with the syndromes of Lesch-Nyhan, deLange, and Tourette. This type of self-mutilation is the focus of biological research or endorphins and on dopamine receptors. Skin cutting and burning, the most common type of self-m

Illicit drug use and male barroom aggression among members of the Australian construction industry: Associations with personality and masculinity factors.

INTRODUCTION: Illicit drug use has been found to increase the risks of male barroom aggression (MBA). Personality traits such as dispositional aggressiveness have been associated with illicit substance use and aggressive behaviour, along with social normative masculinity factors. The present study assessed the relationships between illicit drug use, key personality (trait aggression, impulsivity, narcissism) and masculinity (conformity to masculine norms, male honour) variables with physical MBA perpetration and victimisation among male Australian construction workers. METHODS: A purposive, h

Refining the type A hypothesis: emergence of the hostility complex.

Recent negative research findings have raised questions regarding the robustness of the Type A hypothesis. A growing body of evidence suggests that not all aspects of the global Type A behavior pattern are pathogenic, but only those concerned with hostility and anger. Biologic mechanisms responsible for increased risk of coronary disease in persons with high levels of hostility and anger appear to involve increased cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to behavioral challenge, and, possibly, inadequate parasympathetic antagonism of sympathetic nervous system effects. Future research shou

Harm avoidance and persistence are associated with somatoform disorder psychopathology: A study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Whether personality features affect the development of somatoform disorders and their psychopathologies is an important issue. Aim of this study was to resolve this issue by comparing indicators of psychopathology and personality features in subjects with somatoform disorders and healthy controls. METHODS: This study recruited 148 subjects with somatoform disorders and 146 healthy controls. The severity of psychopathology was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), Health Anxiety Questionnaire (HAQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Beck Anxiety Inven

Introduction to the special issue on personality assessment in medical settings.

This special issue of the Journal of Personality Assessment brings together 3 review articles and 5 research studies on personality assessment in medical settings that should help clinicians become more familiar with the current status of this field. In 1 review article, Sirri, Fabbri, Fava, and Sonino (2007/this issue) summarize evidence of a new approach to the assessment of psychological syndromes in somatizing patients based on the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (Fava et al., 1995). The other reviews focus on 2 personality constructs widely used in investigations with medic

[Psychological aspects of systemic approach to diagnostics of mental and immunological disorders in diffuse-nodular form of Hashimoto's thyroiditis].

Authors have studied 162 patients with the diffuse-nodular form of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). Alexithymic personality type was found to be prevalent in patients in the euthyroid phase (51.9%). In autoimmune thyroiditis, alexithymia and certain cytokine parameters were correlated with psychopathological symptoms as asthenia, anxiety and depression which might be caused by their participation in the pathogenesis of non-psychotic mental disorders during the euthyroid phase. The linkage of alexithymia with certain emotional-personal parameters allows to regard it as one of the component

The relationship between trait hostility and cardiovascular reactivity: a quantitative review and analysis.

Results of a series of meta-analyses indicated that high and low scorers on most trait hostility measures do not consistently differ in blood pressure or heart rate reactivity to traditional laboratory stressors. The few significant effects were modest in size, and instances of hyporeactivity were found. When stressors were classified as provocative versus nonprovocative, in accord with Trait x Situation approaches, however, Potential for Hostility-Interpersonal Style was predictive of exaggerated systolic and diastolic blood pressure responses and the Cook-Medley Hostility Inventory was predi

Personality and psychopathology in Ménière's disease.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Psychological factors in vertigo patients have been extensively studied but the role of anxiety and personality traits in the clinical course of Ménière's disease (MD) is unknown. The objectives of this study are to identify and characterize psychopathology in MD and to find risk factors for an increased rate and intensity of crisis and chronic symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a transversal study in all patients diagnosed with definite MD in our department during a 5-year period. Sample subjects were interviewed in 3 steps: first, an otorhinolaryngolo

Psychological and clinical predictors of return to work after acute coronary syndrome.

AIMS: Resumption of paid employment following acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is an important indicator of recovery, but has not been studied extensively in the modern era of acute patient care. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 126 patients who had worked before hospitalization for ACS were studied with measures of previous clinical history, ACS type and severity, clinical management, and sociodemographic characteristics. Depressed mood (Beck Depression Inventory) and type D personality were measured 7-10 days following admission. Among them, 101 (80.2%) had returned to work 12-13 months later.

Psychologic evolution of patients with Menière's disease in relation to therapy.

The state of anxiety experienced by menieric patients indicates the importance of the psychologic component in this disease. Uncertainties as to the type of treatment that is actually curative for this disease have put doubts on the favorable outcome for patients referred for endolymphatic shunt procedures; some clinicians claim that in such cases surgery simply had a psychologic support function. To evaluate the effectiveness of such a statement, the authors have studied three groups of patients: patients who underwent surgery; patients who underwent medical treatment; and nonmenieric, otoscl

Personality functioning and the pathogenic effect of childhood maltreatment in a high-risk sample.

BACKGROUND: While the psychopathological sequalae of childhood maltreatment are widely acknowledged, less is known about the underlying pathways by which childhood maltreatment might lead to an increased risk for mental health problems. Recent studies indicated that impaired personality functioning might mediate this relationship. The aim of the present paper was to extend the current literature by investigating the mediating effect of impaired personality functioning between different types of childhood maltreatment and self-reported mental health problems in a high-risk sample. METHODS: Ove

Lay theories of etiology and "cure" for four types of paraphilia: fetishism; pedophilia; sexual sadism; and voyeurism.

The current study set out to investigate the structure, determinants, and relationship between lay theories of the etiology and efficacy of "cures" for four types of paraphilia: fetishism, pedophilia, sexual sadism, and voyeurism. One hundred and five participants completed a four-part questionnaire, which was divided into (a) demographic details, (b) perceptions of the etiology, (c) ratings of cure for each paraphilia, and (d) the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Previous studies of lay theories have demonstrated a clear and interpretable factor structure similar to that of explicit academi

The Relationship Between Childhood Abuse, Personality, and Depression: A Narrative Review.

Depression is a common mental health problem that imposes a significant burden on both individuals and society. Numerous studies have shown that childhood abuse has a long-lasting detrimental effect on mental health, including the development of depression. This study reviews recent studies on the association between childhood abuse and depression, highlighting the robust causal link between childhood abuse and subsequent depression. The strength of this association varies depending on the type of abuse, with emotional abuse showing a particularly strong connection to depression. In addition,

Stress, Personality, Attachment, and Coping Strategies During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The STERACOVID Prospective Cohort Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Due to the lockdown linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, the French National Authority for Health has recommended reinforced follow-up of psychiatric patients, with particular attention to people over 65 years. Cross-sectional studies reported an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide during this period. Older people with psychiatric disorders are at higher risk of developing severe COVID-19 and worsening their psychiatric symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The main objective is to evaluate the link between coping strategies and the onset of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after l

Personality trait risk factors for attempted suicide among young women with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: - Clinical observations and a review of the literature led us to hypothesize that certain personality and character traits could provide improved understanding, and thus improved prevention, of suicidal behaviour among young women with eating disorders. METHOD: - The clinical group consisted of 152 women aged between 18 and 24 years, with DSM-IV anorexia nervosa/restrictive type (AN-R = 66), anorexia nervosa/purging type (AN-P = 37), bulimia nervosa/non-purging type (BN-NP = 9), or bulimia nervosa/purging type (BN-P = 40). The control group consisted of 140 subjects. The assessment

Exercise Participation Among Physically Active Adults: A Multidimensional Analysis of Demographic, Anthropometric, Personality, and Behavioral Factors.

Regular participation in recreational physical activity is a key determinant of population health, yet behavioral heterogeneity across adults remains insufficiently understood. This study examined how demographic, anthropometric, and psychological characteristics relate to exercise type (H1), weekly frequency (H2), daily duration (H3), motivational regulation (H4), personality-based differences in exercise modality (H5), and multidimensional behavioral clustering (H6) within a large sample of physically active recreationally active adults. A total of 1564 participants (age: M = 33.65, SD = 9.8
