Sixty patients with pulmonary regurgitation were studied by the pulsed Doppler technique combined with two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography. Patients with pulmonary regurgitation had abnormal Doppler signals just below the pulmonic valve in the right ventricular outflow tract in diastole on the two-dimensional image. Although the diagnostic use of ultrasound has been well established in the management of antepartum problems, its place in the postpartum period has not been widely recognized. Fifty-six patients with postpartum bleeding underwent ultrasonic evaluation of postpartum uterus. Retained placental tissue was found in 9, and large blood clots in 5 patients. Forty-two patients who were found to have an empty uterus were treated conservatively with intravenous oxytocin infusion. Examinations of the blood flow in the vertebral arteries were carried out in 105 patients with circulatory disorders in the vertebrobasilary system. For this purpose the method of ultrasonic dopplerography with subsequent bilateral axillar cerebral angiography was used. A prospective study had demonstrated the clinical usefulness of water-delay ultrasound as a means of routinely imaging the intracranial contents in infants younger than one year of age. A case of ante-natal diagnosis of complete obstruction of the urethra is reported. By repeated ultrasonic B-scans a distended bladder filling the abdominal cavity could be seen, and a hydroureter was demonstrated. By early diagnosis of this condition, which is incompatible with life, a decision to terminate pregnancy can be made.

Ultrasonically guided percutaneous biopsy and aspiration of solid and cystic structures in the abdomen, neck, and pericardial space are common practice. The technique may be utilized for biopsy of peripheral pulmonary masses in contact with the chest wall, in order to assure accurate placement of the needle in the center of the mass, reduce the risk of pneumothorax, and eliminate the exposure to radiation that occurs with fluoroscopic guidance.
