Phonological and morphological processing in adult students with learning/reading disabilities.

A target group of college students with learning/reading disabilities was compared with reading-level (RA) and chronological-age (CA) contrast groups on several phonological and morphological computerized information-processing tasks. Results confirm the importance of accurate and rapid processing of simple lexical items to the automatic level. The target students were less accurate and took longer reaction time, as compared with their CA controls, though not with the RA contrast group, in deciding if pseudohomophonics sounded like real words and if pairs of words with different rime condition

Effect of adherence to scanning protocol on the accuracy of digital interocclusal records.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The accuracy of virtual interocclusal records is critical in fully digital prosthodontic workflows. Although manufacturers provide recommended scanning protocols, clinicians may deviate from them in daily practice. The impact of such deviations on virtual articulation accuracy across intraoral scanners remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the accuracy of virtual interocclusal records obtained using 4 intraoral scanners under manufacturer-recommended and alternative scanning protocols. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A typodont c

Asphyxia screening kit.

Infant asphyxia is a condition due to insufficient oxygen intake suffered by newborn babies. A 4 to 9 million occurrences of infant asphyxia are reported each year by WHO. Early diagnosis of asphyxia is important to avoid complications such as damage to the brain, organ and tissue that could lead to fatality. This is possible with the automation of screening of infant asphyxia. Here, a non-invasive Asphyxia Screening Kit is developed. It is a Graphical User Interface that automatically detects asphyxia in infants from early birth to 6 months from their cries and displays the outcome of analysi

WEB downloadable software for training in cardiovascular hemodynamics in the (3-D) stress echo lab.

When a physiological (exercise) stress echo is scheduled, interest focuses on wall motion segmental contraction abnormalities to diagnose ischemic response to stress, and on left ventricular ejection fraction to assess contractile reserve. Echocardiographic evaluation of volumes (plus standard assessment of heart rate and blood pressure) is ideally suited for the quantitative and accurate calculation of a set of parameters allowing a complete characterization of cardiovascular hemodynamics (including cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance), left ventricular elastance (mirroring left v

Resisting the Avatar: Motor Responses to Spatial Distortions in Upper- and Lower-Limb Reaching Without Visual Targets.

Avatars can serve as virtual representations of a user's body, replicating their movements in real time within an immersive environment. When these movements are closely synchronized with those of the user, a sense of embodiment over the avatar is often experienced. Recent research shows that introducing spatial offsets between a user's real movements and those of their avatar can alter motor behavior, with users aligning with the distorted avatar. While previous studies have typically focused on upper-limb movements toward visual targets, it remains unclear how users respond to distortions wi

Tuning Immersion and Performance with Adaptive Generative Music in VR.

Music in virtual environments has long been treated as a temporal evolving element, enhancing atmosphere and game pace but rarely considered as a performance adaptive element. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and procedural audio make it possible to generate music that adapts in real time to player actions and system state. Yet, despite its potential, the behavioural impact of such adaptive generative soundtracks in head-mounted display-based virtual reality (VR) remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we introduce a VR archery system that integrates Google MusicFXDJ wi

Iterative Design of an Educational Telemedicine Simulation: Addressing Usability Issues to Enhance the Simulation.

Simulations offer safe environments for medical students to practice and develop skills (e.g., clinical, telemedicine). We previously usability tested a gestational hypertension telemedicine simulation to train obstetrics and family medicine residents (Round 1; n = 6). In this study, the next iteration, we revised the simulation and conducted another usability test. Our research questions were: (1) will faculty observers be able assess learner performance in the simulation using our evaluation rubric, and (2) are there remaining scenario, technology, or rubric issues that will complicate the s

Virtual reality-based action observation facilitates the acquisition of body-powered prosthetic control skills.

BACKGROUND: Regular body-powered (BP) prosthesis training facilitates the acquisition of skills through repeated practice but requires adequate time and motivation. Therefore, auxiliary tools such as indirect training may improve the training experience and speed of skill acquisition. In this study, we examined the effects of action observation (AO) using virtual reality (VR) as an auxiliary tool. We used two modalities during AO: three-dimensional (3D) VR and two-dimensional (2D) computer tablet devices (Tablet). Each modality was tested from first- and third-person perspectives. METHODS: We

NCBI's Virus Discovery Codeathon: Building "FIVE" -The Federated Index of Viral Experiments API Index.

Viruses represent important test cases for data federation due to their genome size and the rapid increase in sequence data in publicly available databases. However, some consequences of previously decentralized (unfederated) data are lack of consensus or comparisons between feature annotations. Unifying or displaying alternative annotations should be a priority both for communities with robust entry representation and for nascent communities with burgeoning data sources. To this end, during this three-day continuation of the Virus Hunting Toolkit codeathon series (VHT-2), a new integrated and

Heart rate variability (HRV) during virtual reality immersion.

The goal of the study was assessment of the hour-long training involving handling virtual environment (sVR) and watching a stereoscopic 3D movie on the mechanisms of autonomic heart rate (HR) regulation among the subjects who were not predisposed to motion sickness. In order to exclude predispositions to motion sickness, all the participants (n=19) underwent a Coriolis test. During an exposure to 3D and sVR the ECG signal was continuously recorded using the Holter method. For the twelve consecutive 5-min epochs of ECG signal, the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in time and frequency d

Rational synthesis of pindolol imprinted polymer by non-covalent protocol based on computational approach.

Pindolol (PDL) is a potent and specific adrenoreceptor blocking agent. It is widely used in the treatment of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia and angina pectoris. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic receptors having potential applications in drug delivery systems and devices such as diagnostic sensors. In the present work, ab initio quantum mechanical simulations and computational screening were used to identify functional monomer having best interactions with PDL. A virtual library of 16 functional monomers was built and the possible minimum energy conformation of the monomers

Wrist postures in the general population of computer users during a computer task.

Computer activities have commonly been linked to the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the upper limbs. However, to understand the effects computer use has on such disorders, it is necessary to identify and classify the movements involved in performing common computer tasks, one of these being typing. Motion analysis techniques were adopted to determine the movements involved during a typing task. This involved markers being placed on the knuckles, wrists and forearms of participants. This marker configuration allowed for the flexion, extension, radial deviation, ulnar deviati

The impact of constructive feedback on training in gastrointestinal endoscopy using high-fidelity Virtual-Reality simulation: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Recently, virtual reality computer simulators have been used to enhance traditional endoscopy teaching. Previous studies have demonstrated construct validity of these systems and transfer of virtual skills to the operating room. However, to date no simulator-training curricula have been designed and there is very little evidence on the impact of external feedback on acquisition of endoscopic skills. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of external feedback on the learning curves on a VR colonoscopy simulator using inexperienced trainees. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 22

Soft tissue modelling through autowaves for surgery simulation.

Modelling of soft tissue deformation is of great importance to virtual reality based surgery simulation. This paper presents a new methodology for simulation of soft tissue deformation by drawing an analogy between autowaves and soft tissue deformation. The potential energy stored in a soft tissue as a result of a deformation caused by an external force is propagated among mass points of the soft tissue by non-linear autowaves. The novelty of the methodology is that (i) autowave techniques are established to describe the potential energy distribution of a deformation for extrapolating internal

Different classification techniques considering brain computer interface applications.

In this work the application of different machine learning techniques for classification of mental tasks from electroencephalograph (EEG) signals is investigated. The main application for this research is the improvement of brain computer interface (BCI) systems. For this purpose, Bayesian graphical network, neural network, Bayesian quadratic, Fisher linear and hidden Markov model classifiers are applied to two known EEG datasets in the BCI field. The Bayesian network classifier is used for the first time in this work for classification of EEG signals. The Bayesian network appeared to have a s

Case study: using a virtual reality computer game to teach fire safety skills to children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a computer-based virtual reality (VR) game in teaching five children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) fire safety skills and to generalize these skills to a real world simulation. METHOD: Children participated in a study by using a multiple baseline, multiple probe design. Before the game, no child could correctly describe what actions to take during a home fire. A computerized game allowed them to learn the recommended safety steps in a virtual world. Skill learning and real-world generalization were tested immediately after the interventi
