INTRODUCTION: Noninfectious posterior uveitis is a leading cause of visual impairment. Although conventional immunosuppressive agents have been successfully used, these are nonspecific and their long-term use may induce significant adverse effects. The purpose of this article is to identify recent advances and future therapeutic options in noninfectious posterior uveitis.
AREAS COVERED: A MEDLINE database search was conducted through May 2014 using the terms: uveitis, treatment, intravitreal and corticosteroid, biological. To provide ongoing and future perspectives in treatment options, also …

BACKGROUND: Ocular brucellosis is usually diagnosed by clinical criteria and serological tests. Little is known with regard to the ocular immunology of brucellosis and the use of intraocular diagnostic tests. We report retrospectively the laboratory findings of patients with ocular involvement associated with brucellosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with uveitis with no evident etiologic diagnosis were evaluated at the Instituto de Medicina Tropical "Alexander von Humboldt" of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. Patients were tested for bru…

A Turkish woman aged 44 years who presented with a 1 month history of abdominal pain, fatigue and weight loss of 10 kg was diagnosed as having acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. Opthalmological evaluation revealed unilateral uveitis and contralateral chorioretinal scarring. X-ray films of the pelvis revealed unilateral sacroileitis. An elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, tubular proteinuria and renal glucosuria returned to normal 2 weeks after treatment was started. It is important to be aware of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome in order to achieve a …

PURPOSE: To assess anterior segment anatomy in uveitis-glaucoma- hyphema syndrome.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: Nine pseudophakic eyes (nine patients) with complete or incomplete uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome underwent ultrasound biomicroscopy.
RESULTS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed intraocular lens malposition in each case. Of the eight eyes with posterior chamber intraocular lenses, haptics were in contact with the iris pigment epithelium (four eyes) or the pars plicata (three eyes) or prolapsed into the angle recess near a filtration bleb internal ostium (one eye).…

PURPOSE: Soluble antigen (S-Ag) is a member of the arrestin family of protein with which it shares a high level of homology. It is an immunologically privileged retinal antigen that can elicit experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) and is thought to be a target for ocular inflammatory diseases. This study was conducted to identify in humans, the immunogenic determinants of human S-Ag and to establish whether a specific response profile occurs in particular ocular inflammatory conditions.
METHODS: Peripheral blood lymphocyte responses were measured against a panel of 40 overlapping synthetic pe…

Uveitis is a major cause of blindness, with the visual loss that occurs being due primarily to retinal tissue damage. The tissue damage is mediated mainly by phagocytic inflammatory cells, such as macrophages, by the release of various proteolytic enzymes, arachidonic acid metabolites, cytokines and free radicals. The latter are found to be potent cytotoxic agents that readily cause tissue damage by peroxidation of lipid cell membranes. Recent studies of experimental uveitis indicate that other potent oxidants are generated in uveitis by macrophages. One of these is ONOO-, which is formed from…

Symptomatic anterior uveitis is rare in HIV-positive patients. The uveitis associated with cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR), the commonest ocular manifestation in AIDS patients, is rarely symptomatic and patients do not typically present with a red painful eye in conjunction with blurred vision. In this article we report 12 cases of symptomatic anterior uveitis in HIV-positive patients and discuss the aetiology. The case notes of all HIV-positive patients presenting to the eye department with symptoms of uveitis over a 4-year period were studied retrospectively. The notes were analysed for age…
