COVID-19 Vaccine Literacy Among Black Pregnant and Postpartum Women in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Black pregnant and postpartum women in the USA are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic yet have low vaccination coverage rates. Low levels of vaccine literacy contribute vaccine hesitancy and low vaccination rates, especially in racialized populations that face multiple dimensions of systemic racism and inequalities in access to quality health information and services. Guided by the Public Health Critical Race Praxis, we examined COVID-19 vaccine literacy and information sources among Black pregnant and postpartum women. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured in-de

A Polio Epidemic Is Averted.

Editor's note: From its first issue in 1900 through to the present day, AJN has unparalleled archives detailing nurses' work and lives over more than a century. These articles not only chronicle nursing's growth as a profession within the context of the events of the day, but also reveal prevailing societal attitudes about women, health care, and human rights. Today's nursing school curricula rarely include nursing's history, but it's a history worth knowing. To this end, From the AJN Archives highlights articles selected to fit today's topics and times. In August 1961, the incidence of polio

Rotavirus vaccination impact, Ireland, implications for vaccine confidence and screening.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus vaccine efficacy is well established. However, it is important to consistently demonstrate the positive impact of vaccination programmes in order to optimize uptake rates and combat vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: Routine data were used to examine rotavirus vaccine effectiveness in Ireland, including changes in age-specific crude incidence rates (CIRs), hospitalizations and hospital length of stay. National intussusception incidence was interrogated. Vaccination status of vaccine-eligible cases of rotavirus infection was determined. RESULTS: Nationally, a reduction in the C

Effect of anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination on thrombin generation in children with inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are associated with higher thrombotic risk and enhanced thrombin generation (TG) in adults. Despite encouraging data reporting vaccine safety and low IBD flare rates in adults with IBD, vaccine hesitancy was demonstrated to be high in families of children with IBD. We aimed to find out whether TG is increased in children with IBD as compared to healthy controls and whether TG parameters show significant changes following SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this observatio

High vaccine confidence and strong approval of the mandatory immunization schedule among Bulgarian general practitioners in 2022.

In a context of recently decreasing childhood immunization coverage and low uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in Bulgaria, this study measures vaccine hesitancy among general practitioners (GPs) in the country, as they are central to forming patients' attitudes. In 2022, a face-to-face survey was conducted through a simple random sample from an exhaustive national database of Bulgarian GPs. This study measured attitudes on vaccine importance, safety, and effectiveness, and attitudes toward the Bulgarian immunization schedule. Information was collected on demographic and GP practice characteristics a

Vaccine-preventable severe morbidity and mortality caused by meningococcus and pneumococcus: A population-based study in France.

BACKGROUND: In a context of suboptimal vaccination coverage and increasing vaccine hesitancy, we aimed to study morbidity and mortality in children related to missing or incomplete meningococcal C and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational, population-based study from 2009 to 2014 in a French administrative area that included all children from age 1 month to 16 years who died before admission or were admitted to an intensive care unit for a community-onset bacterial infection. Vaccine-preventable infection was defined as an infection with an identi

Stroke and TIA Survivors' Perceptions of the COVID-19 Vaccine and Influences on Its Uptake: Cross Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: People who have experienced a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) have greater risks of complications from COVID-19. Therefore, vaccine uptake in this vulnerable population is important. To prevent vaccine hesitancy and maximise compliance, we need to better understand individuals' views on the vaccine. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore perspectives of the COVID-19 vaccine and influences on its uptake from people who have experienced a stroke or TIA. METHOD: A cross-sectional, electronic survey comprising multiple choice and free text questions. Convenience sampling was used

[Influenza vaccination as an intervention for cardiovascular prevention and protection in high-risk patients. SIPREC/ANMCO/SIMI/FADOI/ARCA consensus document].

Influenza infection is associated with an increase of cardiovascular events and hospitalizations due to cardiovascular disease. Influenza vaccination is in turn associated with a reduction or mitigation of cardiovascular complications of influenza. For this reason, influenza vaccination represents an additional pillar for cardiovascular prevention and protection. Recent randomized studies conducted in a very large European population have shown that high-dose influenza vaccination provides significant advantages when compared to standard-dose vaccination. These new data derived from the FLUNIT

A Social Media Campaign to Promote COVID-19 Vaccination: Cost-Effectiveness Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy has increased in recent decades internationally, which sets up a critical barrier to the rapid deployment of novel vaccines against infection with SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVE: This study used a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a social media intervention to reduce COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy implemented in Nigeria in 2022. METHODS: The intervention targeted health care providers and adults from the general population who were users of a specific social media platform. We used published estimates from a quasi-experimental evaluation of the

Tracking COVID-19 vaccination barriers over time: a census-tract-level barrier index approach.

We developed a dynamic COVID-19 Vaccination Barrier Index (CVBI) at the census-tract level in Clark County, Nevada and assessed its geographic disparities and relationship with COVID-19 vaccination rates over time. Using monthly census-tract data from December 2020 to June 2022, the CVBI integrated demographic, socioeconomic, environmental, housing, and transportation variables, alongside surrogates for vaccination accessibility and vaccine hesitancy. Lagged weighted quantile sum regression was applied to construct monthly indices, while a Besag-York-Mollié model assessed associations with vac

Childhood vaccination coverage in Europe: impact of different public health policies.

Introduction: Vaccination is a crucial tool for the primary prevention of infectious diseases. Thanks to widespread vaccination, in the last century smallpox has been eradicated, and the Americas and Europe have become polio-free. Areas covered: The aim of our study was to assess vaccination coverage in childhood up to booster preschool age in order to update the analysis on European trends of immunization coverage in the last nine years (2009-2017) and to assess the impact of different national policies on vaccine uptake. Expert opinion: Despite the good results, several EU countries are goin

Using a theoretical framework of Intervention Mapping to inform public health communication messages designed to increase vaccination uptake; the example of mpox in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: During an infectious disease outbreak, primary preventive pre-exposure vaccination (PPV) could substantially increase the potential for its control, if uptake is sufficiently high. An important tool to increase PPV uptake, are communication strategies, with tailored messages targeted to modify determinants for PPV uptake. Here, we take the example of the 2022 mpox multicountry outbreak, as we inform the development of communication strategies by applying a theoretical framework for selecting effective communication strategies. METHODS: The theoretical framework Intervention Mapp
