Premature rupture of the amniotic membranes diagnosed by placental bed biopsy.

Biopsies of the maternal placental bed are usually made to investigate abnormalities of the uteroplacental vasculature. A placental bed biop … ells in edema fluid between muscle fibers, surrounded by intense neutrophilic inflammation. Uterine venules contained fibrin clots with squamous epithelial cells. Some veins had plugs of detached, coiled, and occlusive amniotic thrombi. To our knowledge, histologic evidence of amniotic membrane rupture and amniotic fluid thrombosis with local embolization …

Veno-occlusive disease of the liver induced by low-dose cyclophosphamide.

A 2-yr-old child with idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis and autoimmune thrombocytopenia developed hepatic veno-occlusive disease after bein … the injury was characterized by occlusive lesions of intrahepatic veins, both the terminal hepatic venules and portal veins branches, together with necrosis (predominately involving Zones 3 and 2) and hemorrhages. An added risk factor could have been release of platelet-derived growth factor that in turn activated and promoted proliferation of fibroblast …

Hereditary cerebral small vessel disease: from phenotype to management.

Hereditary cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) comprises a heterogeneous group of monogenic disorders affecting small cerebral arteries, arterioles, capillaries, and venules, leading to stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and vascular cognitive impairment, often at a young age. Despite their rarity, these conditions offer critical insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying microvascular brain injury and are frequently underdiagnosed due to phenotypic overlap with sporadic cSVD. Key diagnostic clues include early onset, disproportionate MRI burden, positive family history, and systemic ma…

Microsurgical treatment of breast cancer-related lymphedema under contrast-enhanced ultrasound guidance: a case report and literature review.

Lymphedema remains a chronic and challenging condition with limited curative options. Recent advances have expanded treatment strategies from comprehensive conservative management to microsurgical interventions, particularly lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA). LVA is a physiological surgical method in which functional lymphatic vessels are connected to nearby subdermal venules, enabling lymphatic fluid to bypass obstructed pathways and drain into the venous circulation. The success of LVA depends heavily on the accurate preoperative assessment and localization of functional lymphatic vessels. …

[Primitive Budd-Chiari syndrome: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge].

Primary Budd-Chiari syndrome is an hepatopathy characterized by obstruction of the hepatic venous flow in the vascular space between the hepatic venules and the junction between the inferior vena cava and the right atrium, thus excluding the causes of upstream (sinusoidal obstruction syndrome) and downstream (cardiac causes). This endoluminal venous obstruction is mainly due to thrombosis or its fibrotic consequences. This is a rare disease, mainly affecting young adults. Clinical manifestations are extremely variable; it can be asymptomatic, acute, subacute or chronic. The diagnosis is mainly…

Pyogenic Granuloma - A Common Benign Vascular Tumor with Variable Clinical Presentation: New Findings and Treatment Options.

Pyogenic granuloma is a common benign vascular tumour occurring in all ages. Both skin and mucous membranes can be affected. Of pathogenetic importance are trauma, BRAF mutations and probably herpes virus type 1, Orf virus and/or human papilloma virus type 2. The tumour consists of capillary proliferations, venules and fibromyxoid stroma. The development of a lesion occurs in three stages and bleeding is a common symptom. The tumour can mimic various other vascular lesions, solid tumours, and soft tissue infections. In recent years, targeted tumour therapies have become the most common cause o…

Retroperitoneal Hemangiopericytoma in a young woman. Case report and literature review.

UNLABELLED: Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a primary tumor with mesenchymal vascular origin that represents 1% of all vascular neoplasm. HPC develops from the Zimmerman's pericytes around capillaries venules and it is possible to observe it frequently in the extremities, pelvis, retroperitoneum, head, neck and meninges. The only definitive parameter of malignancy is the development of recurrence or distant metastases. This report describes a case of symptomatic retroperitoneal HPC in a young female patient treated by surgical complete removal of the mass, and literature review. Despite the relati…

Expression and distribution of aquaporin-1 in nasal polyps: does it have any significance in edema formation?

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and AQP4 in polyp tissue. METHODS: Nasal polyps were obtained from 34 patients with nasal polyposis during endoscopic sinus surgery. Bullous middle turbinates with normal-appearing mucosa of 10 patients were used as controls. Expression of AQP1 and AQP4 water channels were determined by immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: AQP1 has been found to be expressed in fibroblasts located in polyp tissue, especially in the subepithelial area, periphery of seromucous glands, and endothelial cells of venules. C…

High-resolution computed tomographic imaging and pathologic features of pulmonary veno-occlusive disease: a review of three patients.

Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is a rare and severe form of pulmonary hypertension that is often difficult to differentiate from pr … ing. Definitive diagnosis requires lung biopsy, demonstrating fibrous obliteration of the pulmonary venules and small veins of the lobular septa, with secondary medial hypertrophy of the pulmonary arteries. The purpose of this article is to review reported radiographic clues to the diagnosis of PVOD, as well as to illustrate these high-resolution computed …

Diffuse hemorrhagic gastroenteropathy: report of a new entity.

An apparently novel entity, diffuse hemorrhagic gastroenteropathy (DHG), in a 70-year-old female who had an unremitting course of chronic gastrointestinal blood loss for 3 years requiring transfusion of more than 200 units of packed red blood cells over this period is reported here. Endoscopy showed diffusely hemorrhagic mucosa in the stomach, duodenum, and small bowel. Full-thickness biopsy of the stomach and small intestine revealed luminal narrowing of capillaries and post-capillary venules within the lamina propria due to swelling and some proliferation of the endothelial cells with margin…

Imaging of leukocyte-endothelium interaction using in vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy during the early phase of experimental pneumococcal meningitis.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to investigate dynamic aspects of rhodamine 6G-labeled leukocytes in the pial microcircul … ed from 3 to 6 h after infection. Leukocyte adherence to microvascular endothelium occurred in pial venules but not in arterioles. Dexamethasone pretreatment significantly (P < .05) attenuated leukocyte adherence and transendothelial passage of leukocytes.

Hypersensitivity vasculitis and systemic lupus erythematosus induced by anticonvulsants.

Vasculitis can be a systemic manifestation of hypersensitivity to many drugs, among them anticonvulsants. The clinical manifestations include rash and renal, hepatic, and pulmonary involvement. Diagnosis is based upon clinical findings and a characteristic biopsy showing granulocytic and sometimes eosinophilic infiltrates around small blood vessels, especially venules. A severe form of hypersensitivity vasculitis, with extensive visceral involvement and poor prognosis, has been encountered very rarely following phenytoin and in isolated cases following carbamazepine and trimethadione administr…

Effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on pulmonary leukostasis and complement activation.

We measured white blood cell counts and complement component (C3a, C4a, and C5a) and prostacyclin levels, and studied lung biopsy specimens, … operation. Trapping of polymorphonuclear leukocytes occurred in pulmonary alveolar capillaries and venules after bypass. We conclude that bypass activates complement components primarily of the alternative pathway and leads to increased blood prostacyclin levels. These changes are accompanied by polymorphonuclear leukocyte accumulation in the lungs and m …

Electron microscopic study of pyelointerstitial reflux scars.

In addition to confirming the established light microscopic findings, electron microscopic assessment of renal tissue with pyelointerstitial … opy plays an important role in differentiating thin-walled vessels (lymphatic vessels, capillaries, venules). While the presented findings are characteristic for reflux nephropathy, they are not pathognomonic: they also occur, for example, in urinary tract obstructions without reflux mechanism.

Venocclusive disease of the liver after bone marrow transplantation: diagnosis, incidence, and predisposing factors.

Venocclusive disease (VOD) of the liver, a fibrous obliteration of small hepatic venules, can be caused by chemoradiation therapy. We reviewed 255 consecutive patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation for malignancy during 1978 to 1980 in order to determine the incidence of VOD and the predisposing factors. Fifty-three of 255 patients met our criteria for VOD, for an incidence of 21%. Multivariate analysis showed that the most significant risk factors for VOD were age over 15, an underlying malignancy other than acute lymphocytic leukemia and hepatitis prior to transplantation. Patients …

Amyloidosis of the vitreous. Fluorescein angiographic findings and association with neovascularization.

A case of primary systemic amyloidosis with bilateral asymmetric involvement of the vitreous was followed up throughout a 45-month span, during which two vitrectomy procedures were done on one eye. The progressive nature of this disease was documented by serial fluorescein angiograms and fundus photography. The amyloid seemed to be derived from the retina, at small multifocal areas over arterioles and venules that were otherwise clinically and angiographically normal in appearance. Follow-up studies suggested that these focal deposits were actually preretinal, since they disappeared after post…

Unexpected Adverse Effect of Haloperidol: Acute Tongue Angioedema in a Schizophrenic Patient-Case Report and Review.

Angioedema of the tongue, also known as angioneurotic, or Quinke edema is a swelling of the tongue due to plasma leaking from capillary and postcapillary venules into deep submucosal tissue. This condition can either be hereditary, or acquired, due to allergy induced reactions for example. With an acute onset, this phenomenon can potentially be life threatening due to sudden and complete upper airway obstruction. Our aim is to describe the case of a 54-year-old schizophrenic male patient who presented with an angioedema of the tongue occurring after oral administration of haloperidol, a first-…

Management of liver sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease in adults: a 2025 perspective from an international expert group.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) formerly known as Veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a potentially fatal complication that occurs mainly after haematopoietic cell transplantation, especially allogeneic transplantation. The liver is the principal organ affected, though other organs, such as the lungs, may also be involved to a lesser extent. The condition is characterised by obstruction of the hepatic venules, leading to sinusoidal congestion, hepatic ischaemia and, in severe cases, fulminant liver failure. Recent refined diagnostic criteria, published by the European Society for Blood and M…
