Deficits in working memory in young adults with reading disabilities.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the present study was to assess the extent to which reading disabilities (RD) in young adults are related to deficits in specific aspects of temporary storage of verbal information, namely, memory span and the central executive (CE) component of working memory. Thirty-two native Hebrew-speaking young adults with and without RD were administered a battery of memory tasks. These tasks included Digit Span Forward and Backward tests and a new version of the Token Test (TT) which is aimed at detecting subtle deficits in auditory verbal working memory. Results showed signi

Accelerated long-term forgetting in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

AIM: To investigate the presence of accelerated long-term forgetting after a 7-day delay in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), using an adapted verbal memory recall task, Experimental Word Recall Task (EWRT), and to examine its relationship with other cognitive abilities. METHOD: This cross-sectional design involved 60 children with NF1 and 88 typically developing children who completed the EWRT and were aged between 6 years and 15 years 11 months. Statistical analyses were carried out in individuals who met the EWRT learning criteria (i.e., were able to successfully learn the list

Fetal antiepileptic drug exposure and learning and memory functioning at 6 years of age: The NEAD prospective observational study.

The Neurodevelopmental Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs (NEAD) Study was a prospective observational multicenter study in the USA and UK, which enrolled pregnant women with epilepsy on antiepileptic drug (AED) monotherapy from 1999 to 2004. The study aimed to determine if differential long-term neurodevelopmental effects exist across four commonly used AEDs (carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, and valproate). In this report, we examine fetal AED exposure effects on learning and memory functions in 221 six-year-old children (including four sets of twins) whose mothers took one of these AEDs du

Differences in the neuropsychological profiles of high-functioning TSC adults with and without epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disorder often accompanied by neuropsychiatric symptoms, including epi … and learning tasks, with a higher frequency of perseverative and intrusion errors on the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT). Adults without epilepsy showed a distinct profile, characterized mainly by deficits in executive functioning and verbal fluency compared to controls. No significant group differences were observed in demographic variables. CONCLUSIONS: …

Relationship Between Within-Session Digital Motor Skill Acquisition and Alzheimer Disease Risk Factors Among the MindCrowd Cohort: Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that in-lab motor skill acquisition (supervised by an experimenter) is sensitive to biomarkers of Alzheimer disease (AD). However, remote unsupervised screening of AD risk through a skill-based task via the web has the potential to sample a wider and more diverse pool of individuals at scale. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine a web-based motor skill game ("Super G") and its sensitivity to risk factors of AD (eg, age, sex, APOE ε4 carrier status, and verbal learning deficits). METHODS: Emails were sent to 662 previous MindCrowd partici…

Improving dementia assessment by reducing sample heterogeneity.

Outcome assessment for clinical dementia trials could be enhanced by using the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT), in addition to imaging and genetic screening. The statistical power of trials could be increased if heterogeneity of the sample were reduced by the administration of a risk factor inventory which could be used for subject selection or selection of drug responders.

The role of prefrontal cortex in verbal episodic memory: rTMS evidence.

Long-term, episodic memory processing is supposed to involve the prefrontal cortex asymmetrically. Here we investigate the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in encoding and retrieval of semantically related or unrelated word pairs. Subjects were required to perform a task consisting of two parts: a study phase (encoding), in which word pairs were presented, and a test phase (retrieval), during which stimuli previously presented had to be recognized among other stimuli. Consistently with our previous findings using pictures, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) h

Mechanisms for accessing lexical representations for output: evidence from a category-specific semantic deficit.

We report the performance of a neurologically impaired patient, JJ, whose oral reading of words exceeded his naming and comprehension performance for the same words--a pattern of performance that has been previously presented as evidence for "direct, nonsemantic, lexical" routes to output in reading. However, detailed analyses of JJ's reading and comprehension revealed two results that do not follow directly from the "direct route" hypothesis: (1) He accurately read aloud all orthophonologically regular words and just those irregular words for which he demonstrated some comprehension (as indic

[Visuospatial learning impairment in Parkinson Disease].

Visuospatial learning impairment in Parkinson Disease. Despite the fact that different mnesic processes have been found to be impaired in Parkinson's disease, spatial learning is still an unstudied aspect. The aims of the present study were to evaluate visuospatial and verbal learning in nondemented patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) (N= 20), and to assess the influence of processing speed, attention, working memory, and visuospatial perception. Compared to controls (N= 20), PD patients had a poorer performance on Spatial Span, Judgment Line Orientation Test (JLOT), and 8/30 SRT. No differ…

The processing of verbal memories after traumatic brain injury.

Objective: Memory dysfunction is a persistent cognitive symptom following traumatic brain injury (TBI), negatively impacting capacity for independent living and productivity. Traditional scoring of neuropsychological memory tests does not allow for differentiation of specific impairments of encoding, consolidation and/or retrieval, or the potential impact of strategy deficits. Method: The current study examined performance of 142 moderate-to-severe TBI participants and 68 demographically matched healthy controls on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) using Item Specific Data Analysis…

Long-term memory for verbal and visual information in Down syndrome and Williams syndrome: performance on the Doors and People test.

Previous studies have suggested that Williams syndrome and Down syndrome may be associated with specific short-term memory deficits. Individuals with Williams syndrome perform relatively poorly on tests of visuo-spatial short-term memory and individuals with Down syndrome show a relative deficit on verbal short-term memory tasks. However, these patterns of impairments may reflect the impact of generally impaired visuo-spatial processing skills in Williams syndrome, and verbal abilities in Down syndrome. The current study explored this possibility by assessing long-term memory among 15 individu

Memory for what it is and memory for what it means: a single case of Korsakoff's amnesia.

A single case of Korsakoff's syndrome, showing classic circumscribed amnesia on traditional neuropsychological tests, performed a number of learning tasks previously used in primates to demonstrate the different anatomical basis of memory systems used to learn about the properties of objects or to learn about rules of responding. The patient (CJ) performed in a manner very similar to lesioned monkeys in that he could learn evaluative tasks (e.g. a red object is nice), but not rule based tasks (e.g. a red object means go left). In consequence CJ learned an object discrimination task in a manner

Student Violence Against Paraprofessionals in Schools: A Social-Ecological Analysis of Safety and Well-Being.

Violence against teachers has received increasing attention worldwide, with high rates of verbal, threatening, physical, and property violence in schools. Teacher-directed violence contributes to poor mental and physical health, high rates of turnover, and diminished student achievement. Despite these findings, there is a dearth of research on violence experienced by paraprofessionals who play key roles in supporting students with the greatest learning and behavioral needs in schools. Using a sample of 1993 paraprofessionals, this study is one of the first to investigate paraprofessionals' exp

Metabolic and neuropsychological phenotype in women heterozygous for ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency.

We compared neurocognitive indices with clinical status, mutation analysis, and urea synthetic capacity in 19 women heterozygous for ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency. Although as a group, these women had average IQ scores, they displayed a specific neuropsychological phenotype with significant strengths in verbal intelligence, verbal learning, verbal memory, and reading, and significant weaknesses in fine motor dexterity/speed and nonsignificant weaknesses in nonverbal intelligence, visual memory, attention/executive skills, and math. This suggests selective vulnerability of white matter …

Long-term episodic memory alterations and the role of perceived stress in post-COVID-19 condition.

Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) is frequently associated with cognitive impairments, but the integrity of long-term episodic memory remains poorly understood. This study examined immediate, short-term, and very long-term episodic memory in individuals with PCC and evaluated whether emotional disturbances predict long-term recognition outcomes. Forty-one participants (30 PCC; 11 non-PCC) completed a verbal cued-recall task and an immersive virtual reality free-recall object-location memory (OLM) task immediately after learning and the following day. Nine months later, three recognition tasks (ver
