Soft tissue facial angles in Down's syndrome subjects: a three-dimensional non-invasive study.

The aim of the present study was to obtain quantitative information concerning the three-dimensional (3D) arrangement of the facial soft tissues of subjects with Down's syndrome. The 3D co-ordinates of 50 soft tissue facial landmarks were recorded by an electromechanical digitizer in 17 male and 11 female subjects with Down's syndrome aged 12-45 years, and in 429 healthy individuals of the same age, ethnicity and gender. From the landmark co-ordinates, geometric calculations were obtained of several 3D facial angles: facial convexity in the horizontal plane (upper facial convexity, mid facial

[Respiration in orthodontic practice].

In this paper, the author presents his method of dealing with breathing problems when he conducts an orthodontic consultation. Because they can interfere with growth, the author believes that ventilation disorders should be dealt with promptly so that they cannot cause skeletal discrepancies. After having reviewed the literature, the author presents his clinical procedures for uncovering and treating breathing disorders and then shows treated cases to illustrate his techniques, one of the most important of which, palate splitting, is simple, effective and virtually without risk. In addition to

Effects of adenoidectomy and changed mode of breathing on incisor and molar dentoalveolar heights and anterior face heights.

BACKGROUND: Mouth breathing may affect facial form and the positions of the teeth. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the increased dentoalveolar and facial heights found in mouth breathing children with enlarged adenoids are maintained following adenoidectomy and changed mode of breathing from mouth to nose. METHODS: The subjects were Swedish children, either mouth breathers with nasal obstruction caused by large adenoids, or nose breathers. The children in the mouth breathing group were adenoidectomized at seven years of age and changed from mouth breathing to nose breathing. The unoperated

Orthodontic treatment of openbite and deepbite high-angle malocclusions.

The aim of the investigation was to assess the effect of orthodontic treatment on dentoskeletal morphology in children with openbite and deepbite high-angle malocclusion. Subjects (n = 54) in the mixed dentition with a hyperdivergent mandibular plane angle (high-angle, NSL/ML > or =40 degrees) were surveyed. Pre- and posttreatment lateral roentgenographic cephalograms were analyzed. Subjects were divided into three subgroups according to the amount of pretreatment overbite: < 0 mm = insufficient/no compensation (openbite); 0-4 mm = acceptable compensation (normal overbite); >4 mm = overcompens

Centronuclear myopathy and nursing pattern caries: management of a 1 year old.

The pathognomonic open mouth of centronuclear and other myopathies can also have implications for oral health. These patients are at greater risk for gingivitis, dental caries as a result of the mouth breathing and loss of lip seal. Low tongue posture may impede the lateral expansion of the maxilla resulting in a constricted maxillary arch with resultant posterior crossbites and functional shifts. Excessive molar eruption may also occur, resulting in anterior open bites and increases in the anterior lower vertical height.

Effects of a fixed magnetic appliance on the dentofacial complex.

The purpose of the study was to design and evaluate the effects of a fixed magnetic appliance that hinged the mandible open and exerted an intrusive force on the teeth. Ten patients between the ages of 8 years and 10 years 6 months, with Class II, Division 1 malocclusion associated with mandibular retrusion and increased lower facial height, were treated with this appliance. The length of treatment was 4 months, after which the appliance was removed and the patients were followed up for 4 months. Ten children with similar age, sex, and dentofacial characteristics acted as controls and did not

Facial growth after treatment of unilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis in childhood without growth centre transplantation. A serial cephalomorphometric study.

Our aim was to study the influence of early surgical treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis on further facial growth and development. At the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Zurich, 11 children with a unilateral TMJ-ankylosis met the criteria of a maximal preoperative interincisal mouth opening of 15 mm, of a minimal long-term postoperative interincisal mouth opening of 30 mm, and of excellent documentation. 30 anatomical landmarks were defined on the copies of the follow-up cephalograms using the structure-superimposition technique. The points were perforated and digitized. Analy

Sleep benefits cross-dimensional binding of spatial context in episodic memory.

The active systems consolidation hypothesis predicts that sleep compared to wakefulness benefits context binding in episodic memory for retention intervals of up to 12 h. Extending previous research on sleep benefits in item-context associative memory, we investigated whether sleep also improves bound source memory for cross-dimensional context associations. In a source-monitoring experiment, we used intentionally learned pictures as items and incidentally learned horizontal and vertical screen positions as context dimensions to compare cross-dimensional binding in spatial source memory for re

Depth-kymography: high-speed calibrated 3D imaging of human vocal fold vibration dynamics.

We designed and developed a laser line-triangulation endoscope compatible with any standard high-speed camera for a complete three-dimensional profiling of human vocal fold vibration dynamics. With this novel device we are able to measure absolute values of vertical and horizontal vibration amplitudes, length and width of vocal folds as well as the opening and closing velocities from a single in vivo measurement. We have studied, for the first time, the generation and propagation of mucosal waves by locating the position of its maximum vertical position and the propagation velocity. Precise kn

Morphological changes of the caudal cervical intervertebral foramina due to flexion-extension and compression-traction movements in the canine cervical vertebral column.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies in humans have reported that the dimensions of the intervertebral foramina change significantly with movement of the spine. Cervical spondylomyelopathy (CSM) in dogs is characterized by dynamic and static compressions of the neural components, leading to variable degrees of neurologic deficits and neck pain. Studies suggest that intervertebral foraminal stenosis has implications in the pathogenesis of CSM. The dimensions of the cervical intervertebral foramina may significantly change during neck movements. This could have implication in the pathogenesis of CSM and
