Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin and wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase were iontophoretically injected into different parts of the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) of the rat. Injections centered into the caudal part of the medial vestibular nucleus revealed a vestibulospinal projection predominantly to the dorsal horn of the cervical spinal cord, besides the expected projection to the intermediate zone (IZ) and ventral horn (VH). While most of the anterogradely labelled fibres could be localized in laminae III to V, some scattered fibres were also seen in laminae I and VI. Lamina

Afferents often form synapses on restricted regions of their target cells. The connections between vestibular axons and the Mauthner cell are an example of this sort of specificity. The Mauthner cells are a pair of identifiable central neurons in certain fish and amphibians. In the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), the large vestibular axons form club endings on only one portion of one dendrite of the Mauthner cell. During development, this specific distribution might result from nothing more than when and where the growing axons and dendrite meet (spatiotemporal model). Alternatively, the distri

Immunohistochemical staining was used to investigate the expression pattern of SEIPIN in the mouse central nervous system. SEIPIN was found to be present in a large number of areas, including the motor and somatosensory cortex, the thalamic nuclei, the hypothalamic nuclei, the mesencephalic nuclei, some cranial motor nuclei, the reticular formation of the brainstem, and the vestibular complex. Double labeling with NeuN antibody confirmed that SEIPIN-positive cells in some nuclei were neurons. Retrograde tracer injections into the spinal cord revealed that SEIPIN-positive neurons in the motor a

Protocadherin 9 (Pcdh9) is a member of the cadherin superfamily and is uniquely expressed in the vestibular and limbic systems; however, its physiological role remains unclear. Here, we studied the expression of Pcdh9 in the limbic system and phenotypes of Pcdh9-knock-out mice (Pcdh9 KO mice). Pcdh9 mRNA was expressed in the fear extinction neurons that express protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 1 B (Ppp1r1b) in the posterior part of the basolateral amygdala (pBLA), as well as in the Cornu Ammonis (CA) and Dentate Gyrus (DG) neurons of the hippocampus. We show that the Pcdh9 protein was

PURPOSE: We aimed to study the results of the head impulse paradigm (HIMP) and the suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) in patients with acute vestibular neuritis (AVN) to compare dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) scores before and after treatment. We also wanted to investigate the correlation between the HIMP, SHIMP and DHI score and to analyze the factors that affect the recovery with AVN in the short term.
METHODS: The HIMP, SHIMP, and DHI score were assessed in 20 patients with AVN before (T0) and after treatment (T1). We collected the following indicators: T0, T1-HIMP VOR gain; T0,

PURPOSE: Benign recurrent vestibulopathy is a recent entity, close to probable Meniere's disease and vestibular-migraine. So far, no study has systematically investigated the presence of endolymphatic hydrops of the lateral semicircular canal in benign recurrent vestibulopathy using magnetic resonance imaging. The aim of this study was to determine magnetic resonance imaging data and vestibular test results in patients with benign recurrent vestibulopathy.
METHODS: 128 patients with benign recurrent vestibulopathy included since 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients had magnetic resona

A retrospective analysis of the horizontal video head impulse test (vHIT) results and caloric testing results was undertaken on 644 patients who attended a neuro-otology outpatient facility. Presenting symptoms included spontaneous vertigo, positional vertigo, imbalance or chronic subjective dizziness. For 570 patients, the results of vHIT and caloric testing were concordant. Both tests were normal in 500 subjects with an average vHIT gain = 0.92 ± 0.09 (L); 0.98 ± 0.10 (R) and canal paresis (CP) = 7.88 ± 6.12; (range 0-28%). 54 had concordant asymmetries, average ipsilesional vHIT gain = 0.56

Conjugated cyclotorsion of the eyes toward the affected side can commonly be observed in vestibular neuritis. The aim of this study was to assess the differences in cyclotorsion between the ipsi- and contralesional eye during selective involvement of the superior branch of the vestibular nerve. We studied binocular cyclotorsion through ocular fundus photographs in 10 patients affected by acute superior vestibular neuritis (SVN). Cyclotorsion was also studied in 20 normal subjects. All SVN patients showed an ipsilesional cycloversion of the eyes. Normal subjects exhibited a constant mild excycl

BACKGROUND: The peak head velocity influences on the video head impulse test (vHIT) results, but it has been not known how much the difference is.
AIMS: To evaluate the clinical evidence for the superiority of high-velocity compared to low-velocity vHIT.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: vHIT was performed in 30 patients with vestibular neuritis using two peak head velocities (mean 80 vs. 240°/s). vHIT gains and parameters of corrective saccades (CSs) were compared. A vHIT gain of ≤0.8 or a peak CS velocity of ≥100°/s was considered pathologic.
RESULTS: The vHIT gains were significantly lower (mean 0.5

UNLABELLED: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is a caloric vestibular areflexia that occurs suddenly, and whose compensation can take several weeks, sometimes several months. Usually these patients are rehabilitated, but the most affected patients (cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) absent) have a worse prognosis of vestibulo-ocular compensation. Thanks to symptomatic, videographic and posturographic evaluation tools, we objectify and quantify which factors influence the recovery or more accurately the compensation of this type of disorder. EQUIPMENT AND METHOD: We have colligated 34
