Ocular findings in cerebral palsy patients undergoing orthopedic surgery.

PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence and clinical features of ocular abnormalities in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) and the association with gross motor function. METHODS: A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed in 88 consecutive patients with CP before and during orthopedic surgery in a tertiary hospital from July 2008 to March 2010. The prevalence and clinical features of ocular abnormalities and the association with gross motor function state were investigated. RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients (89%) had ocular abnormalities. Refractive errors were found in 53 patients (60

Zebrafish use spectral information to suppress the visual background.

Vision first evolved in the water, where the spectral content of light informs about viewing distance. However, whether and how aquatic visual systems exploit this "fact of physics" remains unknown. Here, we show that zebrafish use "color" information to suppress responses to the visual background. For this, zebrafish divide their intact ancestral cone complement into two opposing systems: PR1/4 ("red/UV cones") versus PR2/3 ("green/blue cones"). Of these, the achromatic PR1 and PR4, which are retained in mammals, are necessary and sufficient for vision. By contrast, the color-opponent PR2 and

Amblyopic stereo vision is efficient but noisy.

People with amblyopia demonstrate a reduced ability to judge depth using stereopsis. Our understanding of this deficit is limited, as standard clinical stereo tests may not be suited to give a quantitative account of the residual stereo ability in amblyopia. In this study we used a stereo test designed specifically for that purpose. Participants identified the location of a disparity-defined odd-one-out target within a random-dot display. We tested 29 amblyopic (3 strabismic, 17 anisometropic, 9 mixed) participants and 17 control participants. We obtained stereoacuity thresholds from 59% of ou

Ocular dominance plasticity: inhibitory interactions and contrast equivalence.

Brief monocular occlusion results in a transient change in ocular dominance, such that the previously patched eye makes a stronger contribution to the binocular percept after occlusion. The previously unpatched eye therefore makes a correspondingly weaker contribution to the binocular sum. To shed light on the mechanism underlying this change we investigate how the relationship between the perception of fusion, suppression, and diplopia changes after short-term monocular deprivation. Results show that fusible stimuli seen by the unpatched eye are actively suppressed as a result of patching and

High-Power Prismatic Devices for Oblique Peripheral Prisms.

PURPOSE: Horizontal peripheral prisms for hemianopia provide field expansion above and below the horizontal meridian; however, there is a vertical gap leaving the central area (important for driving) without expansion. In the oblique design, tilting the bases of both prism segments toward the horizontal meridian moves the field expansion area vertically and centrally (closing the central gap) while the prisms remain in the peripheral location. However, tilting the prisms results also in a reduction of the lateral field expansion. Higher prism powers are needed to counter this effect. METHODS:

The dichoptiscope: an instrument for investigating cues to motion in depth.

A stereoscope displays 2-D images with binocular disparities (stereograms), which fuse to form a 3-D stereoscopic object. But a stereoscopic object creates a conflict between vergence and accommodation. Also, motion in depth of a stereoscopic object simulated solely from change in target vergence produces anomalous motion parallax and anomalous changes in perspective. We describe a new instrument, which overcomes these problems. We call it the dichoptiscope. It resembles a mirror stereoscope, but instead of stereograms, it displays identical 2-D or 3-D physical objects to each eye. When a pair

Visual function in nonsyndromic craniosynostosis: past, present, and future.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on visual function in craniosynostosis have mainly focused on ocular movements and ophthalmologic findings. More recently, some studies also included the assessment of more functional and electrophysiological aspects of vision, such as acuity and visual evoked potentials. METHODS: We reviewed all the relevant publications on visual findings in infants and children with both syndromic and nonsyndromic craniosynostosis and reported our own recent experience on the presurgical assessment of visual function in infants with single suture nonsyndromic craniosynostosis.

Retinal image shifts, but not eye movements per se, cause alternations in awareness during binocular rivalry.

Particularly promising studies on visual awareness exploit a generally used perceptual bistability phenomenon, "binocular rivalry"--in which the two eyes' images alternately dominate--because it can dissociate the visual input from the perceptual output. To successfully study awareness, it is crucial to know the extent to which eye movements alter the input. Although there is convincing evidence that perceptual alternations can occur without eye movements, the literature on their exact role is mixed. Moreover, recent work has demonstrated that eye movements, first, correlate positively with pe

Practical assessment of vision in the elderly.

In this article we have demonstrated the significant visual impairments in elders with good vision by standard measures when the viewing conditions are less than ideal--low contrast, low or changing light level, or glare. Much of this impairment can be accounted for by the known age-related changes in the eye. We have emphasized that two people of the same age with the same standard acuity can have dramatically different vision under these nonideal conditions. Because one cannot predict vision under these conditions on the basis of standard acuity, it is important to use these additional measu

Differential effects of various causes of deafness on the eyes, refractive errors, and vision of children.

A retrospective study of oculovisual assessment records of the population of three Ontario schools for deaf children assessed the differential effects of various causes of deafness on the prevalence of vision anomalies. Inherited deafness (ID) appears to be associated with the fewest visual anomalies. Congenital rubella (CR) had the greatest prevalence and was associated with the broadest spectrum of ocular and visual problems. It appears to have a significant effect on corneal curvature as well as being associated with anomalies of other organ systems. Children who had had CR, neonatal sepsis

Onset and Outcome of Ocular Lesions in Neonatal Severe Protein C Deficiency: Case Report and Literature Review.

Neonatal protein C (PC) deficiency, which presents with purpura fulminans or hemorrhagic infarction, has a poor prognosis. In a sporadic case of prenatal-onset purpura fulminans, preemptive intervention saved the patient but not her vision. Among 38 survivors from 47 cases with ocular lesions and biallelic PROC variants, 23 had total blindness and eight had unilateral blindness. Only one had intact vision. Prenatal-onset ocular lesions occurred in 11 cases (29% [corneal opacities, n = 7; bilateral persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, n = 1; both, n = 3]). The eyes are the first organ affe

Ocular Monkeypox - United States, July-September 2022.

As of October 11, 2022, a total of 26,577 monkeypox cases had been reported in the United States.* Although most cases of monkeypox are self-limited, lesions that involve anatomically vulnerable sites can cause complications. Ocular monkeypox can occur when Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is introduced into the eye (e.g., from autoinoculation), potentially causing conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, and loss of vision (1). This report describes five patients who acquired ocular monkeypox during July-September 2022. All patients received treatment with tecovirimat (Tpoxx)†; four also received topica

Association of serum immunoglobulins levels and eye injuries in sulfur mustard exposed: Sardasht-Iran Cohort Study.

In this study the associations between ocular problems and serum levels of immunoglobulins in sulfur mustard (SM) exposed population 20 years after exposure in context of Sardasht-Iran Cohort Study was explored. Serum immunoglobulins (Ig) levels including IgM, IgA, IgE, IgG, and subclasses of IgG (IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4) in 372 SM-exposed patients were titrated and compared with 128 unexposed controls considering their ocular problems. In exposed patients with tearing and blurring of vision, serum IgM levels were significantly lower than matched controls (P=0.026 and 0.027, respectively). S

Capture of visual direction in dynamic vergence is reduced with flashed monocular lines.

The visual direction of a continuously presented monocular object is captured by the visual direction of a closely adjacent binocular object, which questions the reliability of nonius lines for measuring vergence. This was shown by Erkelens, C. J., and van Ee, R. (1997a,b) [Capture of the visual direction: An unexpected phenomenon in binocular vision. Vision Research, 37, 1193-1196; Capture of the visual direction of monocular objects by adjacent binocular objects.
