Databases of liquid-liquid phase separation proteins and condensates.

Protein liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and the formation of biomolecular condensates are increasingly recognized as important in both cellular physiology and pathology. However, the computational databases developed to catalog LLPS-associated proteins differ significantly in scope, curation strategies, evidence models, and annotation granularity. Here, we compare the main LLPS databases, discuss what each resource captures well, where role definitions and evidence models diverge, which metadata remain limited, and how these differences affect data interpretation and reuse. We argue that

Using animated vehicles with real emotional faces to improve emotion recognition in Chinese children with autism spectrum disorder.

The objective of the present study was to conduct an intervention study which aimed to improve emotion recognition for Chinese children with ASD by using animated vehicles with real emotional faces. A total of 21 children participated in the current study; participants consisted of 14 children (2 girls) with a formal diagnosis of ASD and 7 typically developing children. Participants were measured on emotional vocabulary and situation-facial expression matching before and after the intervention. Results indicated that the intervention significantly improved ASD children's emotion recognition co…

A personal epistemology: towards gender diversity.

In spite of the growing public awareness of those who would identify as transgender, very little has changed in attitudes that would accord … ing experiences from her nursing career. Included in the discussion are linguistics, sexuality, and vocabulary. A personal epistemology is explored that incorporates unknowing, intuition, and embodiment, and the difference this view can make to the care of those who identify as gender-diverse.

Disambiguation and mapping of new word meanings by individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities.

Wilkinson and Green (1998) reported that differences in the procedure by which new words were introduced to learners with cognitive impairments significantly affected their accuracy in later tests of receptive understanding of word meanings. However, a limited sample and no control group rendered the data preliminary. Here, I replicated and extended the research. First, a control group of preschool children, matched on receptive vocabulary age, was compared to individuals with intellectual disability of unspecified origin. Second, performance was also evaluated in three matched groups of varyi…

REWARD-an open-source framework for identifying the unknown benefits of existing medications to inform drug discovery, development, and repurposing.

OBJECTIVES: The potential of "big data" in health research remains largely untapped, particularly concerning real-world data sources such as administrative health data and electronic medical records. While healthcare insurance claims data have been essential for assessing medication safety and effectiveness within indicated patient populations, exploring broader drug-outcome associations could uncover significant insights. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The REWARD (REal-World Evidence and Research of Drug performance) framework was established to perform large-scale analytics on medication benefits b

Parental phonological memory contributes to prediction of outcome of late talkers from 20 months to 4 years: a longitudinal study of precursors of specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Many children who are late talkers go on to develop normal language, but others go on to have longer-term language difficulties. In this study, we considered which factors were predictive of persistent problems in late talkers. METHODS: Parental report of expressive vocabulary at 18 months of age was used to select 26 late talkers and 70 average talkers, who were assessed for language and cognitive ability at 20 months of age. Follow-up at 4 years of age was carried out for 24 late and 58 average talkers. A psychometric test battery was used to categorize children in terms of lang…

Matching-to-sample assessment of stimulus overselectivity in students with intellectual disabilities.

A delayed matching-to-sample task with multiple sample stimuli was used to evaluate stimulus overselectivity in 70 individuals attending residential special-education schools. A Mental Age Equivalent score (MAE) was obtained for each student using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Twenty-one participants failed to complete matching-to-sample pretests (mean MAE = 3.70 years). Results on the multiple-sample test for the remaining 49 participants indicated no overselectivity for 14 students (mean MAE = 7.44 years) and were consistent with overselectivity for 35 students (mean MAE = 5.28 years)…

Hearing loss of Down syndrome adults.

Audiological hearing-test data were obtained for 51 Down syndrome adults. Depending upon hearing-loss criteria, from 51 to 74 percent of the subjects had some degree of hearing impairment. Correlation coefficients between these hearing-acuity measurements and receptive hearing vocabulary scores suggest a moderate relationship. These data indicate that Down syndrome adults are prone to a wide variety of hearing difficulties that may reflect a variety of ear pathologies. These data and other studies have shown that both Down syndrome adults and children need frequent hearing screening and, when …

Counting parts and wholes and the mastery of partitive language.

Children under age 6 or 7 quantify over objects of a single kind in ways that differ markedly from adults. For example, shown three pieces o … ursor meanings akin to subsective adjectives. Experiments 1-4 establish that knowledge of partitive vocabulary is unrelated to quantificational decisions on a part/whole quantification task at these ages. In contrast, this early knowledge of partitive language selectively predicts success at using the contrast between "half/piece" and "whole" in a non-verbal …

Sex-typical toy, activity, and playmate preferences in autistic and non-autistic children.

Play, in particular sex-typical play, is important for affective, cognitive, and social development. There is limited research on sex-typical play in autistic children. The few prior studies on this topic relied heavily on reports or involvement of caregivers/parents, did not assess cognitive abilities, and examined a limited number of sex-typical play outcomes. The present study examined sex-typical play in 120 children without intellectual disability (30 autistic boys, 35 non-autistic boys, 20 autistic girls, 35 non-autistic girls) aged 4-11 years. Vocabulary and abstract reasoning were also…

Reading Fluency in Chinese Children With Reading Disabilities and/or ADHD: A Key Role for Morphology.

The Triangle Model of Reading proposes that phonology, orthography, and semantics are crucial to understand word reading and reading disability (RD). Morphology has been added as a binding agent to this model. However, it is unclear how these variables relate to word reading in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or comorbid ADHD and RD (ADHD+RD). This study examined the performance of Chinese children with RD, ADHD, or ADHD+RD in phonology, orthography, semantics, and morphology, and investigated whether morphology made an additional contribution beyond the other ski

Vowel dyslexia in Turkish: A window to the complex structure of the sublexical route.

We report on developmental vowel dyslexia, a type of dyslexia that selectively affects the reading aloud of vowel letters. We identified this dyslexia in 55 Turkish-readers aged 9-10, and made an in-depth multiple-case analysis of the reading of 17 participants whose vowel dyslexia was relatively selective. These participants made significantly more vowel errors (vowel substitution, omission, migration, and addition) than age-matched controls, and significantly more errors in vowel letters than in consonants. Vowel harmony, a pivotal property of Turkish phonology, was intact and the majority o

Using AAC to unlock communicative potential in late-talking toddlers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report on modifications we made to a standardized input-based word learning treatment for two late-talking toddlers. The modifications were the addition of an augmentative alternative communication (AAC) device and the requirement that the children use this device, or speech, to communicate. METHOD: We used a single-subject design to track late-talking toddlers' progress through an input-based word learning treatment, which was part of a larger study. Because the input-based treatment protocol was not effective for each toddler based on absent or clin

Exploring the phonological profiles of children with reading difficulties: A multiple case study.

Studies of group differences have established that the phonological profiles of people with reading difficulties contain both strengths and weaknesses. The current study extends this work by exploring individual differences in phonological ability using a multiple case study approach. A heterogeneous sample of 56 children (M age = 9 years) with reading difficulties completed a battery of tasks measuring literacy, phonological processing, expressive vocabulary and general ability. The phonological tasks included measures of phonological awareness (PA), phonological memory (PM), and rapid naming…

EATING AND FEEDING DISORDERS IN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF LIFE: REVISING THE DC:0-3R DIAGNOSTIC CLASSIFICATION OF MENTAL HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS OF INFANCY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD AND RATIONALE FOR THE NEW DC:0-5 PROPOSED CRITERIA.

Problems of eating and feeding are one of the most common reasons of referral to pediatric and infant mental health clinics. This article is drawn from work done by the ZERO TO THREE Task Force developing the DC:0-5 Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood, specifically dealing with eating disorders in the first 5 years of life. The proposed changes come from both reviewing major studies and reviews published in the last 10 years and reports from clinicians collected through surveys commissioned by the Task Force. The main changes th
