Combinatory chemical and biological approaches to investigate metal elements in agricultural runoff water.

As part of a project studying the interactions between farming practices, soil erosion processes, and fate of agricultural pollutants into runoff waters, we conducted a pilot study to investigate the relationship between metal contents and metallothionein-2A (MT-2A) as a bioindicator of metal exposure. Runoff water samples were collected between May and November 1999 at the point of outlet of an elementary watershed located in the Paris basin. Selected metals (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ni, and Zn) were analyzed using conventional techniques. In parallel, human T cells were exposed to water s

Ecological drivers of movement for two sympatric marine predators in the California current large marine ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: An animal's movement reflects behavioral decisions made to address ecological needs; specifically, that movement will become less directional in regions with high prey availability, indicating foraging behavior. In the marine realm, animal behavior occurs below the sea surface and is difficult to observe. We used an extensive satellite tagging dataset to explore how physical and biological habitat characteristics influence blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and fin (B. physalus) whale movement and foraging behavior in the California Current Ecosystem across four known bioregions. METHOD

Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii in irrigation waters and agricultural soils of Central Luzon, Philippines: implications to human health.

Toxoplasma gondii, a parasitic protozoan that causes toxoplasmosis, is estimated to infect a significant percentage of the world's population. One of the main routes is through consumption of contaminated water, soil, or food containing oocysts. Large scale outbreaks through water contamination were reported across various regions. However, in the Philippines, there is still no data on the occurrence of T. gondii oocysts in environmental matrices. In this study, T. gondii oocysts DNA were detected in irrigation waters and agricultural soils from selected sites in Central Luzon, Philippines, an

Impact of morphological parameters on water quality variables of a regulated lowland river.

An efficient method to investigate which morphological changes have greatest impact on the water quality is to carry out a computer modelling exercise. In this study, three models, a hydrodynamic (DYNHYD), a eutrophication model (EUTRO), and a sediment and micro-pollutant transport model (TOXI), were coupled together in the High Level Architecture (HLA) platform. DYNHYD dynamically simulates the propagation of a wave through a river reach one-dimensionally by solving the full dynamic wave equation. Important parameters that describe the river morphology are the roughness coefficient and the we

Analysis of the transport of cyanide spill on the Tisza River.

The present paper deals with the wastewater pond accident in Nagybánya (Romania) in 2000 of which the result was an about 100 tons of highly toxic cyanide spill into the River Tisza. Measurements and laboratory tests were performed during the toxic wave transport. On the basis of this data set mass balance calculations were performed by hydraulic and transport models to investigate and better understand the effect of the accident and to calculate the possible heavy metal sedimentation process in Tisza River bed. This paper deals with calculations for cyanide and copper which are mostly associa

Analysis of EMG signals of patients with essential tremor focusing on the change of tremor frequency.

Essential tremor is a disorder that causes involuntary oscillations in patients while engaging in actions or while maintaining a posture. ET patients have serious difficulties in performing activities of daily living such as eating food, drinking water, and writing. We have thus been developing an EMG-controlled exoskeletal robot to suppress tremors. The EMG signal of ET patients involves a mix of voluntary movement and tremor signals. To control the exoskeletal robot accurately, tremor signals must be removed from the patient's EMG signal. To date, we have been developing a filter to remove t

Tremor and voluntary repetitive movement in Parkinson's disease: comparison before and after L-dopa with positron emission tomography.

Brain regions involved in tremor and voluntary movement were compared in seven subjects with hemiparkinsonian tremor using positron emission tomography and the [15O] water bolus activation method. Repeated measurements of the regional cerebral blood flow were performed both before and after tremor arrest induced by administration of L-dopa as well as during voluntary repetitive movements of the hand contralateral to tremor side. The normalized regional cerebral blood flow (NrCBF) was measured in regions of interest with anatomical boundaries that were defined for each subject by means of a thr

Acquired transient vasopressin deficiency by cannabinoids and other substances.

Water movement across cell membranes through aquaporin water channels creates osmotic equilibrium between extracellular and intracellular fluid compartments. Plasma osmolality is tightly regulated by the kidneys and brain through the process of osmoregulation. The antidiuretic hormone, arginine vasopressin (AVP), is normally released from the posterior pituitary in response to increased osmolality or decreased intravascular volume. Defects in the synthesis or release of AVP result in AVP deficiency (AVP-D) and the syndrome of central diabetes insipidus, characterized by inappropriate aquaresis

Combined oil spill modelling and shoreline sensitivity analysis for contingency planning in the Irish Sea.

Offshore oil spills often result in severe environmental and socio-economic consequences. This work focuses on a busy, yet poorly studied part of NW Europe, the Irish Sea, to assess the impact of future oil spills on the nearby coast. By integrating numerical models and shoreline sensitivity analyses for two confined areas, Liverpool Bay and Milford Haven, this work acknowledges wind direction and speed as principal controls on the movement of oil under winter/storm conditions and in shallow waters. Ocean currents play a secondary role, but are significant in deeper waters and in low-wind summ

Evolution of Socioeconomic Conditions and Its Relation to Spatial-Temporal Changes of Giardiasis and Helminthiasis in Amazonian Children.

This study analyzed the evolution of socioeconomic, sanitary, and personal factors as well as spatiotemporal changes in the prevalence of helminthiasis and giardiasis in urban Amazonian children between 2003 and 2011. Child age, lack of sanitation, and lack of access to bottled water were identified as significant associated factors for helminthiasis and giardiasis. There was an overall improvement in socioeconomic and sanitary conditions in the city resulting in decreased helminth prevalences from 12.42 to 9.63% between 2003 and 2010, but the prevalence increased to 15.03% in 2011 due to migr

Changes in the ventilation of the southern oceans.

Changes in the ventilation of the southern oceans over the past few decades are examined using ocean measurements of CFC-12 and model simulations. Analysis of CFC-12 measurements made between the late 1980s and late 2000s reveal large-scale coherent changes in the ventilation, with a decrease in the age of subtropical Subantarctic Mode Waters (SAMW) and an increase in the age of Circumpolar Deep Waters. The decrease in SAMW age is consistent with the observed increase in wind stress curl and strength of the subtropical gyres over the same period. A decrease in the age of SAMW is also found in

Simulation-based reservoir analysis assisted by chemical tracers transport for the development of enhanced oil recovery strategies.

Understanding subsurface fluid flow behavior is essential for optimizing enhanced oil recovery (EOR) strategies in petroleum reservoirs. This study presents a comprehensive tracer-based diagnostic approach combining both aqueous- and gas-phase tracers to characterize pre-EOR water and gas movement in a synthetic reservoir model. Methanol, a conservative aqueous-phase tracer, and perfluoromethylcyclopentane (PMCP), an inert gas tracer, were employed in two separate simulations using the commercial software reservoir simulator. In the water-phase tracer study, methanol was injected to assess wat

Effect of various mediums on water bead expansion in acidic and neutral solutions.

INTRODUCTION: Ingestions of expanding water beads by young children may result in proximal small bowel obstruction and even death. We sought to explain a mechanism for these unusual obstructions and explore potential interventions. METHODS: A single brand of polyacrylamide expanding water beads were placed in a hydrochloric acid solution (pH 2.0) and water (pH 6.0) to simulate the stomach and duodenal environments. Six stomach and duodenal simulant samples were made and one in each group served as controls. An intervention was added to five samples including polyethylene glycol, orange juice,

A comparative study of sperm motility kinematics in six fish species of the subfamily Leuciscinae (Actinopterygii: Cypriniformes).

AIMS: A comparative study was conducted on the sperm motility kinematics of six species within the subfamily Leuciscinae, aiming to elucidate the potential relationship between variations in sperm motility parameters and both the water currents at their spawning grounds and their mating behaviour. METHODS: Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was performed to evaluate nine motility parameters. Water currents at the spawning grounds and mating behaviours were compiled based on literature data. KEY RESULTS: This study identified both similarities and differences in sperm motility characteri

Contamination of estuaries from failing septic tank systems: difficulties in scaling up from monitored individual systems to cumulative impact.

Aquaculture in many coastal estuaries is threatened by diffuse sources of runoff from different land use activities. The poor performance of septic tank systems (STS), as well as runoff from agriculture, may contribute to the movement of contaminants through ground and surface waters to estuaries resulting in oyster contamination, and following their consumption, impacts to human health. In monitoring individual STS in sensitive locations, it is possible to show that nutrients and faecal contaminants are transported through the subsurface in sandy soils off-site with little attenuation. At the

Water heater temperature set point and water use patterns influence Legionella pneumophila and associated microorganisms at the tap.

BACKGROUND: Lowering water heater temperature set points and using less drinking water are common approaches to conserving water and energy; yet, there are discrepancies in past literature regarding the effects of water heater temperature and water use patterns on the occurrence of opportunistic pathogens, in particular Legionella pneumophila. Our objective was to conduct a controlled, replicated pilot-scale investigation to address this knowledge gap using continuously recirculating water heaters to examine five water heater set points (39-58 °C) under three water use conditions. We hypothesi

Metabolic, behavioral, and locomotive effects of feeding in five cyprinids with different habitat preferences.

Fish generally perform routine swimming behaviors during food digestion; thus, changes in swimming performance and adjustments to spontaneous behavior resulting from digestion can have important ecological significance for wild fishes. The effects of feeding on metabolism, spontaneous activity, fast-start escape movement, and critical swimming speed (U crit) were investigated in five cyprinids with different habitat preferences, specifically the Chinese crucian carp (Carassius auratus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus), Chinese bream (Parabramis pekinensis), a

[Osmotic cerebral oedema: the role of plasma osmolarity and blood brain barrier].

There are five types of oedema: vasogenic, cytotoxic, interstitial, hyperemic and osmotic. The differences lie on the type and localization of the oedema, the state of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the pathological context. Under physiological conditions, the osmolarity of extra cellular fluids (ECFs) is equal on both sides of the BBB. However, the pathophysiological variations of circulating osmolarity (including acute hyponatremia and hypernatremia) do not affect, at the same time, the osmolarity of cerebral ECFs. This situation generates an osmotic gradient on either side of the BBB. Th

Modeling connectivity and sediment reduction with PROSEB: a study of prairie strips in agricultural catchments.

Understanding how vegetative barriers influence sediment transport at the catchment scale remains challenging due to the partial dynamic nature of hydrologic dysconnectivity. This study introduces PROSEB, a model designed to assess sediment retention performance of buffer strip type structures under varying configurations in small agricultural catchments. The model evaluation integrates landscape hydrologic connectivity theory with six years of field data from 12 experimental catchments in Iowa, USA, ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 ha and containing single or multiple prairie strips covering 10% to 20

Individual and combined impacts of carbon dioxide enrichment, heatwaves, flow velocity variability, and fine sediment deposition on stream invertebrate communities.

Climate change and land-use change are widely altering freshwater ecosystem functioning and there is an urgent need to understand how these broad stressor categories may interact in future. While much research has focused on mean temperature increases, climate change also involves increasing variability of both water temperature and flow regimes and increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2, all with potential to alter stream invertebrate communities. Deposited fine sediment is a pervasive land-use stressor with widespread impacts on stream invertebrates. Sedimentation may be managed at the
