This paper describes a probabilistic model, based on the Johnson-Ettinger algorithm, developed to characterize the current and historic exposure to tricholorethylene (TCE) and tetrachlorethylene (PCE) in indoor air from plumes of groundwater contamination emanating from the former Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. We estimate indoor air concentration, house by house, in 30 101 homes and compare the estimated concentrations with measured values in a small subset of homes. We also compare two versions of the Johnson-Ettinger model: one used by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

The extraction of metallic minerals and the mineral dressing operations in concentrators produced a high impact in soils and sediments. Heavy metals in soils constitute a high risk of pollution, not only for mining areas, but also for agriculture and villages placed in subsidiary areas. This research has been focused on the assessment of the real environmental and health hazards of Zn in relation to geochemistry and metal mobility in surface soils from a mining area in SE Spain, under semiarid weather conditions. Mineralogy of the studied soils revealed major presence of quartz, but also of ot

Environmental pollutants are responsible for the deterioration of air, water, and soil quality. The non-biodegradability of heavy metal ions makes them a more problematic pollutant. Human and natural activities are the main sources of their presence in water. Conventional remediation techniques for heavy metals are costly and time-consuming. This review explores the integration of phytoremediation with nanotechnology for sustainable environmental clean-up. It highlights the adsorption of heavy metal ions using nanomaterials and the remediation of residual nanoparticles through plant species. I

Water pollution poses a severe threat to both aquatic ecosystems and human health, highlighting the crucial importance of monitoring and regulating its levels in water bodies. In contrast to traditional single-treatment approaches, multiple-treatment methods enable the simultaneous detection and removal of water pollutants using a single material. This innovation not only offers convenience but also fosters a more holistic and effective approach to water remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are versatile porous materials that offer significant potential for use in wastewater treatment.…

The history of streams and rivers is as much a social and technological history as it is a scientific one. Rivers are the lifeblood of nations and the control of their waters has been fundamental to the building of human civilisations. The control or regulation of rivers embodied the advancement of institutions, administration and co-ordination; it was a manifestation of military and economic power. Yet the history of human development is also characterised by the degradation of the basic resource--polluted water, increased flooding, and the loss of biological diversity. Many early civilisatio

BACKGROUND: Fish skin microbiomes are rarely studied in inland water systems, in spite of their importance for fish health and ecology. This is mainly because fish species distribution often covaries with other biotic and abiotic factors, complicating the study design. We tackled this issue in the northern part of the Jordan River system, in which a few fish species geographically overlap, across steep gradients of water temperature and salinity.
RESULTS: Using 16S rRNA metabarcoding, we studied the water properties that shape the skin bacterial communities, and their interaction with fish ta

Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) are used to assess fecal pollution levels in surface water and are among the criteria used by regulatory agencies to determine water body impairment status. While FIB provide no information about pollution source, microbial source tracking (MST) does, which contributes to more direct and cost effective remediation efforts. We studied a watershed in Florida managed for wildlife conservation that historically exceeded the state regulatory guideline for fecal coliforms. We measured fecal coliforms, enterococci, a marker gene for avian feces (GFD), and a marker gene

This study analyzed the organic distribution characteristics of original and treated water and their impacts on drinking water quality using a conventional water treatment process in the typical water supply sources for towns in the southwest hilly area of China. The results showed that the water supply source in this area is micro-polluted water. Dissolved organics of low molecular weight accounted for the great majority of the organics, with the proportion ranging from 50% to 80%. There were 53 kinds and 14 classes of organics, including alkanes, esters, phenolic compounds, and benzenes, wit

Heavily-polluted PM₂.₅ (fine particulate matter) episodes frequently impacting Beijing, especially during winter, have become a substantial concern. We found that during winter, the daily variation of PM2.5 in Beijing tracked the pattern of relative humidity (RH). With the increase of PM₂.₅ (or RH), water-soluble components (especially inorganic ions) became more abundant, and the water-soluble organic carbon to organic carbon ratios increased. The nitrate to sulfate ratios also exhibited dependence on RH, and were higher than those measured about a decade ago, consistent with the increasing t

Residual plastic film in soil destroys the soil structure and changes the normal transportation and distribution of water and nutrient. In this work, we compared experiments on soil containing residual plastic film with a control experiment to investigate how residual film affects the transportation and distribution of water and nitrate (NO3-) in wetted soil. The experiment used Mariotte bottle, water tube, and soil tank to test six levels of residual-film concentration varying from 0 to 720 kg/hm2 in the soil. The wetting front, soil water content, and nitrate concentrations were all measured

Iron determines the abundance and diversity of life and controls primary production in numerous aqueous environments. Over the past decades, the availability of this metal in natural waters has decreased. Iron deficiency can apply a selective pressure on microbial aquatic communities. Each aquatic organism has their individual requirements for iron and pathways for metal acquisition, despite all having access to the common pool of iron. Cyanobacteria, a photosynthesizing bacterium that can accumulate and form so-called 'algal blooms', have evolved strategies to thrive in such iron-deficient aq

BACKGROUND: Billions of the world's poorest households are faced with the lack of access to both safe drinking water and clean cooking. One solution to microbiologically contaminated water is boiling, often promoted without acknowledging the additional risks incurred from indoor air degradation from using solid fuels.
OBJECTIVES: This modeling study explores the trade-off of increased air pollution from boiling drinking water under multiple contamination and fuel use scenarios typical of low-income settings.
METHODS: We calculated the total change in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) fr

Perchlorate is a persistent inorganic pollutant, which has high stability, high water solubility, and strong oxidizing properties. It has been widely detected in various environmental media, including air, water and soil. Perchlorate primarily enters human body through diet and drinking water. As an inhibitor of iodine uptake, perchlorate mainly affects thyroid gland function after entering the human body, thereby influencing metabolism, neurodevelopment and other physiological functions. This poses a significant risk to human health. This paper summarizes epidemiological studies on the nature

Environmental emission of pharmaceutical pollutants notably causes the contamination of aquatic ecosystems and drinking water. Typically, reduction of these pollutants in the environment is mostly managed by ameliorated wastewater treatments. Here, we report a method for the eco-design of drugs through the introduction within the molecular structure of a sensitive chemical group responsive to water treatments. The new drugs are thus programmed to fragment more easily and quickly than the original drugs. In this "retro catabolic drug design" strategy, methotrexate was used as drug model and an

The shallow weathering fissure groundwater in the red-bed area of Southwest China is usually the only drinking water source for most rural residents. In this study, a typical landfill with surrounding residents drinking unpurified groundwater in red-bed area was selected and water quality detection, groundwater numerical simulation and human health risk assessment were used to identify and assess groundwater pollution in the region. The chemical type evolved from HCO3-SO4-Ca-Mg and HCO3-SO4-Ca to Na-Ca-Cl-HCO3 contaminated by the landfill. Na+ and Cl- were selected as factors for rapid identif…

Mosquito breeding sites consist of water pools, which can either be large open areas or highly covered ponds with vegetation, thus with different light exposures combined with the presence in water of xenobiotics including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) generated by urban pollution. UV light and PAHs are abiotic factors known to both affect the mosquito insecticide resistance status. Nonetheless, their potential combined effects on the mosquito physiology have never been investigated. The present article aims at describing the effects of UV exposure alongside water contamination with

Fecal microbial pollution of recreational and shellfishing waters is a major human health and economic issue. Microbial pollution sourced from stormwater runoff is especially widespread, and strongly associated with urbanization. However, non-point source nutrient pollution is also problematic, and may come from sources different from fecal-derived pollution (i.e. fertilization of farm fields, lawns and gardens, and ornamental urban areas). Fecal bacteria require nutrients; thus the impact of such nutrient loading on survival and abundance of fecal coliform bacteria in ambient waters was exper
