White matter hyperintensities (WMH) can compromise cognition in older adults, but differences in sampling, WMH measurements, and cognitive assessments contribute to discrepant findings across studies. OBJECTIVE: Characteristics of black and white callers to a gambling helpline for southern New England were examined for racial differences.
METHODS: Logistic regression analyses were performed on data from 2000-2003 from 1,627 callers (9% blacks and 91% whites).

The diagnosis as Graves' disease was made when the patient was 5 years old, and a subtotal thyroidectomy was performed when she was 10. RESULTS: It is not possible to identify reliably WBC by conventional sperm staining techniques. We describe a 40-year-old white man with a peculiar skin eruption in association with polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. No underlying disease was detected. A skin biopsy specimen showed a proliferation of mature plasma cells intermingled with some lymphocytes and histiocytes, an appearance consistent with cutaneous plasmacytosis. This disease had been previously described only in Japanese patients. In our patient the disease progressed slowly. Lymph node infiltration by mature plasma cells was later noted.

We have studied the effect of the HIV epidemic on the incidence of tuberculosis in an inner city area of London which has a high incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). During the period 1985-1991, there was a steady increase in the number of new AIDS cases, whilst the numbers of notifications and laboratory isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis remained largely unchanged.
