Is the public healthcare sector a more strenuous working environment than the private sector for a physician?

AIMS: The present study examined the differences between physicians working in public and private health care in strenuous working environments (presence of occupational hazards, physical violence, and presenteeism) and health behaviours (alcohol consumption, body mass index, and physical activity). In addition, we examined whether gender or age moderated these potential differences. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data were compiled on 1422 female and 948 male randomly selected physicians aged 25-65 years from The Finnish Health Care Professionals Study. Logistic regression and linear regres

Occupational violence at Lebanese emergency departments: prevalence, characteristics and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Emergency departments (EDs) workers are at increased risk of exposure to occupational violence. The prevalence of occupational violence is potentially higher and consequences are more serious in areas with poor security conditions. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence, characteristics and factors associated with the exposure of ED workers to violence at Lebanese hospitals. METHODS: All ED employees at six tertiary hospitals in Lebanon were surveyed using a cross-sectional design. The survey instrument included four sections collecting demographic/professional information an

Hospital nurses' management of agitation in older cognitively impaired patients: do they recognise pain-related agitation?

BACKGROUND: cognitively impaired hospital patients often experience agitation and aggression due to pain. Agitation complicates care, increasing the risk of adverse outcomes and patient-to-nurse violence. Managing agitation is challenging for nurses. Literature suggests they may rely on antipsychotics while missing other more appropriately targeted treatments. However, nurses' management of agitation remains unclear and under-researched. OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study was to investigate hospital nurses' management of agitation in older cognitively impaired patients with pain. DESIGN: this

Intimate partner violence: estimating the prevalence of partner-inflicted psychological maltreatment experienced by female workers in a tertiary healthcare facility in southwestern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global health problem that involves harmful, aggressive, and potentially life-threatening abuse against a partner in an intimate relationship. IPV may involve physical, verbal, psychological, or emotional abuse with an intercalating pattern of occurrence. Females are primarily victims of IPV, with men as perpetrators in most cases. Female healthcare workers also suffer from IPV, much like the general women population. However, most previous studies only focused on IPV in the general women population without particular focus on female workers in

Prevalence and factors associated with inconsistent condom use among female sex workers in Ethiopia: findings from the national biobehavioral survey, 2020.

BACKGROUND: The HIV prevalence among Ethiopian female sex workers (FSWs) is estimated to be around 18.5%, which implies that FSWs' sexual partners are significantly exposed to HIV infection and that may be a major factor in HIV transmission in the community. However, it has long been known that using condoms correctly and consistently is an extremely cost-effective global method for preventing HIV infection, but inconsistent condom use (ICU) would pose the greatest proximal risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. Understanding the prevalence and associated risk factors of inconsistence condo

Risk of physical assault against school educators with histories of occupational and other violence: a case-control study.

A case-control study design was used to investigate risks of work-related physical assault (PA) associated with a history of violent victimization among educators. A total of 6,469 state-licensed educators (Kindergarten - Grade 12) worked in the previous 12~months and were eligible to participate. Exposure data were collected from cases (reporting a PA event in previous 12 months, n=290) for the month before PA, and from controls (no work-related PA in previous 12 months; n=867) for a randomly selected working month. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals identified increased risks for educa

Finding better solutions to end bullying: what an organizalion can do .

In order to stop bullying we must recognize and assess the problem, discuss it, educate and train employees, and create zero tolerance policies and formal/informal complaint processes, ensuring that they are fair and safe for the person making a complaint. This series of articles has touched on the very real issue of bullying in our workplaces and among our professional peers in midwifery. My personal goal for this series was to find the essence of the lesson in bullying and how it can become a positive subject. Once it has been "named" and discussed and organizations try to change the tide an

Retrospective evaluation of ketamine versus droperidol on time to restraint removal in agitated emergency department patients.

PURPOSE: Acute agitation and violent behavior in the emergency department (ED) can lead to significant patient morbidity and contribute to the growing problem of workplace violence against health care providers. To our knowledge, there is no available literature directly comparing intramuscular ketamine to intramuscular droperidol in ED patients presenting with undifferentiated agitation. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness and safety of these agents for acute agitation in the ED. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study conducted at an urban, acade…

The recovery processes among paramedics who encountered violence during work-a narrative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Almost all paramedics encounter workplace violence (WPV) during their careers. The most common form of WPV is verbal, and the perpetrator is usually the patient. It is known that paramedics suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems, and WPV is one of the reasons behind that. Nevertheless, little is known about the recovery processes paramedics have had after encountering WPV. The research question was: What kind of recovery processes have paramedics had after encountering WPV? METHODS: A qualitative, narrative interview study was done. Data was co…

Experiences of Bias Victimization Among People With Intellectual Disabilities.

Research has drawn attention to the stigma and high rates of victimization among people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and an overlap between bias and non-bias victimization. However, studies of bias events or hate crime involving persons with ID are scarce. Using a self-report measure, we analyze lifetime bias victimization in a sample of 260 adults diagnosed with ID (age M = 41.7, SD = 12.0; 59.2% men), of whom 92 experienced bias victimization (age M = 41.2, SD = 11.9; 54.3% men), and compare the number of different types of victimization and the poly-victimization status between bias

Exposure to negative acts at work, psychological stress reactions and physiological stress response.

OBJECTIVES: The overall aim of the study was to test the association between exposure to negative acts at work, psychological stress-reactions and cortisol secretion and whether some negative acts are more detrimental to health than others. METHODS: A questionnaire study included 1010 respondents from 55 workplaces. Three saliva samples collected from the participants at awakening, 30 min later and at 20:00 during a workday were analysed for cortisol concentrations. Negative acts were measured using a modified version of the revised Negative Acts Questionnaire (to measure bullying behaviour).

Evaluating the Safe Steps for De-escalation: A protocol for a mixed concurrent control study in acute mental health units.

There is a shared goal of organising reform efforts in mental health services to eliminate restrictive practices and improve therapeutic relationships. However, evidence on high-quality, culturally safe, co-produced, and strengths-based interventions and evaluations is limited, especially for complex interventions centred on therapeutic responding. In response, a multi-centre, mixed concurrent control study is underway to evaluate the Safe Steps for De-escalation, a multi-component intervention focused on a structured framework for mental health nurses' therapeutic responses to emotional distr
