[Epidemiological characteristics and control of filariasis in Hunan Province].

Of 98 counties or cities in Hunan Province, 55 were endemic areas of filariasis. The average microfilaria rate was 5.64% (180,046/3,194,102), and the incidence of advanced filariasis, including elephantiasis and hydrocele was 3.29%. The number of filariasis patients in the whole province was estimated to be 1.63 million, comprising 1.25 million of microfilaremia cases, Culex fatigans and Anopheles hyrcanus sinensis were the major vectors of bancroftian and malayan filariasis respectively in the province. Control strategies concentrated on the elimination of infection source were implemented on

The utility of human filarial serum in the detection of circulating antigen.

The utility of human filarial serum immunoglobulin (FSI) in detecting circulating antigen in filarial sera was studied by counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) and the indirect haemagglutination test (IHAT). CIEP was found to be better than IHAT. 23 out of 30 sera from persons with microfilaeremia and one of 30 clinical cases of filariasis, but none of the normal sera or sera from those with helminths other than filariae, showed the presence of circulating filarial antigen in CIEP. FSI was fractionated by DEAE- Sephadex A-50 column chromatography and the antibody active in CIEP was found to be

[Lymphoedema and elephantiasis due to filariasis. Pathogenesis and clinical aspects (author's transl)].

Adult lymphatic filariae (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi) can cause blocking of lymphatics producing obliterating endolymphitis lesions. The subsequent extravasation of lymph (or chyle when the obstruction is canal) is at the origin of the formation of lymphedema or elephantiasis, in which the main histological finding is great hypertrophy of collagen elements. This theory involving filaria only is not the full picture, and bacterial infection, mainly by streptococci, is an important factor. The association of filaria with microbes is particularly dangerous because the presence of the lat…

[Antigenic activities of eggs, egg membranes, metabolic products and hatched larvae from the uterus of dipetalonema viteae (author's transl)].

Eggs of different stages of development, egg membranes, and the fluid isolated from uterus and pseudocoelomic cavity show antigenic properties against sera from Wuchereriasis- and Onchocerciasis-patients in the indirect immunofluorescent test, while hatched larvae did not show any fluorescence. Isolation and simple drying of these antigenic materials on microscopic slides when compared with histologically prepared antigenic material (Methacrylate or cryostate-sections) proved to have quantitatively and qualitatively equal antigenic properties in the immunofluorescent test with considerable tec…

On the escape of infective filarial larvae from the mosquitoes.

Experimentally infected females of Culex pipiens fatigans carrying infective larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti were fed, on the 16th day p.i., on four different solutions, which were offered "cold" (24 degrees C) or "warm" (34 degrees C) in Petri dishes as open fluids. Thus the sucking mosquitoes did not have to bend their labia. Only the "warm" human serum stimulated any considerable number of infective larvae (24.8%) to leave the mouthparts of the mosquitoes. 1289 infective C. fatigens females lost only an estimated 6.4% of their infective larvae of W. bancrofti, when they were maintained on su…

Chyluria: a case report and brief literature review.

A case of chyluria presumably caused by Filaria bancrofti is presented. The radiographic and urologic presentation as well as a brief review of the natural history, diagnosis and treatment is included.

Development of filarial parasites in mosquitos in north-east Tanzania.

Natural populations of 6 species of mosquito-Anopheles tenebrosus, Taeniorynchus (Mansonioides) africanus, Taeniorynchus (Mansonioides) uniformis, Anopheles coustani, Anopheles ziemanni, and Anopheles pharoensis-were examined for filarial parasites. Infective stages of Dirofilaria immitis were found in the first 3 of these species, which are therefore considered vectors. Laboratory studies to see whether or not any of the 6 could potentially transmit Wucheria bancrofti showed only A. tenebrosus to be capable of producing the infective stage.

Postintervention Immunological and Entomological Survey of Lymphatic Filariasis in the City of Olinda, Brazil, 2015-2016.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a leading cause of disability due to infectious disease worldwide. The Recife Metropolitan Region (RMR) is the only remaining focus of LF in Brazil, where the parasite Wuchereria bancrofti is transmitted solely by the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus. This study reports the results of transmission assessment surveys and molecular xenomonitoring in the city of Olinda, RMR, after nearly 15 years (2015-2016) of interventions for LF elimination. Participants were screened for W. bancrofti antigen via immunochromatographic card tests (ICT) in: 1) door-to-door surveys con…

Progress towards elimination of lymphatic filariasis in the Americas region.

In South and Central America, lymphatic filariasis (LF) is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, which is transmitted by Culex quinquefasciatus, the only vector species in this region. Of the seven countries considered endemic for LF in the Americas in the last decade, Costa Rica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago were removed from the World Health Organization list in 2011. The remaining countries, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Guyana and Haiti, have achieved important progress in recent years. Brazil was the first country in the Americas to stop mass drug administration (MDA) and to establish post-MD…

Filariasis: new drugs and new opportunities for lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chemotherapy against onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis has been discussed mainly within the framework of mass drug administration with diethylcarbamazine, ivermectin and albendazole. Although strong reductions in infection prevalence were achieved, the regimes for these drugs do not fully cover needs of individual patients who seek treatment because of symptoms. Chemotherapy against filarial Wolbachia endosymbionts with doxycycline showed higher antiparasitic efficacy in onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis and also improved disease. This review details the recent i

The pathogenesis of filarial lymphedema: is it the worm or is it the host?

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of filarial lymphedema, although evolving, is still limited. Recurrent bacterial infections play a major role in the progression of lymphedema to elephantiasis, but the host and parasite factors that trigger disease development are not known. Field studies in Haiti show that lymphedema and host responses to parasite antigens cluster in families, consistent with the hypothesis that host genes influence lymphedema susceptibility. The recent recognition that filarial parasites harbor the endosymbiotic bacteria, Wolbachia, also raises questions about the poten

[Observation on the persistence period and transmission of residual microfilaremia with medium and higher density].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the persistence period of medium and higher density of microfilaremia and its role in the transmission of filariasis in areas with filariasis basically eradicated. METHODS: The residual microfilaremia was followed up and the population were regularly examined by thick blood film assay. Culex quinquefaciatus were dissected to determine the natural infection rate and density of filarial larvae. The filarial antibody levels were detected by using IFAT. RESULTS: Two cases with medium and higher density of microfilaremia were found to be microfilaremia positive for twelve ye
