Compression therapy is an effective and common approach to the management of lymphoedema, a chronic condition requiring long-term treatment. Lymphoedema is caused by the accumulation of fluid in soft tissue, resulting in swelling of the affected limb or area. Lymphoedema may be primary, as a result of a genetic abnormality, or secondary, as a result of injury, including non-accidental injury, or following treatments such as radiotherapy and/or surgery. The condition is characterised by a high protein oedema and secondary skin changes. This article outlines features of the various types of comp

Non-accidental injury should be suspected and excluded in any infant found to have intracranial and retinal haemorrhage of unknown aetiology. This can be a sensitive issue for both medical staff and parents. We present a case in which the underlying cause of intracranial and retinal haemorrhage was fibromuscular dysplasia. It was a diagnosis made only at postmortem examination and it illustrates the diagnostic difficulty such cases may present.

INTRODUCTION: More and more teenagers indulge in sports at school or in recreational settings. Some of these sports are considered to be purveyors of accidents and should be practiced by putting in place safety rules and regulations. This report is unusual case of a school child of age 13 who suffered from depressed skull fracture due to accidental fall of a mass of 3kg during an athletics meeting.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: He was a 13-year-old boy who accidentally received on his head a throwing mass of 3kg thrown by a young athlete at a school athletics meeting. He became unconsciousness for a

Childhood mortality and morbidity patterns in the English-speaking Caribbean have changed significantly over the past 40 years. Acute respiratory illness, physical injury and conditions originating in the perinatal period have replaced malnutrition, gastroenteritis and other infectious diseases as major causes of illness and death in Caribbean children. Although population growth has slowed down, about one-third of the population of the English-speaking Caribbean remains under the age of 15 years. Infant mortality rates have also fallen but the major contributor to this decline has been a redu

Among the main causes of death in our country are car accidents, drowning and accidental burns. Strangulation is a potentially fatal injury and an important cause of homicide and suicide among adults and adolescents. In children, its occurrence is usually accidental. However, in recent years, several cases of accidental strangulation in children around the world have been reported. A 2-year-old male patient was strangled in a car window. The patient was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 8 and presented with progressive worsening of respiratory dys

Approximately 3 million healthcare workers per year receive an injury with an occupational instrument, with around 2000000 exposures to hepatitis B virus (HBV) and 1000000 to hepatitis C virus (HCV). Although an effective HBV vaccine has been available since the early eighties, and despite the worldwide application of universal vaccination programs started in the early nineties, HBV still remains a prominent agent of morbidity and mortality. There is no vaccine to limit the diffusion of HCV infection, which progresses to chronicity in the majority of cases and is a major cause of morbidity and

There are multiple congenital structural abnormalities that affect male urogenital tract which could affect either the male external genitalia, internal genitalia or both. Congenital anomalies of the vas deferens may be unilateral or bilateral that could be complete or segmental and include (agenesis, atresia, duplication, ectopy or diverticulum). Anomalies of the vas deferens may be isolated or may be associated with other congenital anomalies especially in the male urogenital tract. These rare vas anomalies may be discovered during genital examination (either clinically or radiologically) or

INTRODUCTION: Subconjunctival hemorrhages and facial petechiae are rare oculo-cutaneous findings in the pediatric population and can be a sign of strangulation or traumatic asphyxia as a result of increased intrathoracic pressure.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old female presented to medical care with facial petechiae and bilateral subconjunctival hemorrhages following a routine dental appointment. The child disclosed being physically restrained and "smacked" by the dentist. While her symptoms were initially characterized as an allergic reaction by Emergency Medical Services, the child was ulti

Bite injuries frequently occur on human hands. Human bite injuries to the hand may lead to an infection because of limited soft tissue protection and wound contamination. However, no studies have reported severe bite injuries on hands treated by flaps. We report a case of an 80-year-old woman diagnosed with a major neurocognitive disorder. The patient accidentally had a self-bite injury accompanied with an open metacarpal fracture. Debridement and fixation of the first metacarpal fracture were performed. Afterward, skin necrosis occurred gradually on the dorsum of the hand. Therefore, a revers

Mucormycosis is usually an invasive mycotic disease caused by fungi in the class mucormycetes. Here we report a case of cutaneous mucormycosis due to Lichtheimia ramosa in a 20-year-old female patient with burn injuries. She was admitted to the hospital with accidental flame burns covering 60 % total burn surface area. After 15 days of admission to hospital, the burn wound showed features of fungal infection. Culture showed white cottony growth belonging to the Mucorales order. Morphological identification confirmed it as L. ramosa. She was managed surgically and medically with the help of amp

The exposure to caustic substances in childhood, being accidental in most cases, can cause doubts in the initial diagnostic therapeutic approach; the risk of missing lesions following caustic ingestion when symptoms are scarce or lacking is high. The paper provides an overview of the physiopathology and clinical presentation of caustic injuries and stress the possibility of burns of esophagus and/or stomach even without oropharyngeal symptoms and/or signs. The esophagogastroduodenoscopy has now an essential role in the evaluation of gastrointestinal tract injury, as a guide to the therapy and

INTRODUCTION: Splenic Angioembolization (SAE), during Nonoperative Management (NOM) of Blunt Splenic Injury (BSI), is an effective therapy for hemodynamically stable patients with grade III, IV, and V OIS splenic injuries. We report a case of a patient with a blunt abdominal trauma due to an accidental fall, who presented splenic abscess a week after SAE and a review of the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old male arrived at Emergency after an accidental fall with contusion of the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal CT scan revealed the fracture of the lower splenic pole with int

101 homicides caused by stabbing were examined for the presence of defence-injuries. 50 victims showed 174 defence-injuries on hands and forearms (133 incision wounds, 26 stab wounds and 15 cutting through). More than two thirds of lesions were found on left arm. That those lesions mostly were found on left arm is caused by the interaction between perpetrator and victim. Victims left arm is nearest to the perpetrator therefore it is used as a mean of defence first of all. The probability that defence-injuries can be seen is rising with the number of stab wounds. Localisation of a defence-injur

Despite only having one tertiary institution on the island, Barbados has eight other community clinics where free healthcare is obtained and numerous private options where one can access care. Ultimately, any significant or urgent case is referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further management. In the case of unexplained injuries in an infant, regardless of the route of healthcare access, the interagency approach ultimately involves other key entities. An interagency approach encompasses collaboration among various organizations to address this complex issue. This written work will hig
