Temporal misalignment of brain-heart coupling accounts for multilevel interoceptive dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia involves profound disturbances in the sense of a bodily self. These disturbances increasingly appear to arise from disrupted interoception, the perception of internal physiological signals. However, dominant models that emphasize either intrinsic neural timescales or interoceptive inference tend to treat cardiac signals merely as passive sensory inputs. Here, we propose that cardiac rhythm dynamics may provide a phase-based temporal reference for large-scale neural coordination, potentially synchronizing neural activity across otherwise disparate temporal scales. This scaffolding

Limb state accounts for differences between motor imagery and action in motor cortex.

The motor cortex is involved not only in movement execution but also in motor imagery, a process leveraged by decoding algorithms for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications in individuals with severe motor impairments. Previous work has shown that population activity during execution and imagery occupies partially overlapping regions of neural state space while also engaging distinct subspaces unique to each motor state, suggesting that decoders trained in one condition may not generalize to the other. Moreover, movement execution likely includes neural representations of both motor outpu

Moving towards acceleration with accountability: a conceptual framework for AI-assisted systematic reviews.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being rapidly integrated into systematic review workflows, yet its impact on methodological rigor, transparency, and reporting quality remains poorly understood. This work examines the current use of AI assistance in systematic reviews and identifies gaps in existing appraisal frameworks. We aim to propose a conceptual methodological and illustrative framework that maps AI-assisted processes in the systematic review workflow. METHODS: We conducted a conceptual methodological analysis informed by a targeted, non-systematic review of recent literatu

Resetting the hippocampal buffer: a neurocognitive account of psychedelic therapy for anxiety-related psychopathology.

Psychedelics (hallucinogenic 5-HT2A agonists such as psilocybin) are being investigated for their potential to treat a range of conditions, including anxiety-related psychopathology. Despite promising results, the mechanisms by which psychedelic therapy may alleviate anxiety are not well understood. Here, we review neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying anxiety-related psychopathology and how psychedelics may impact these mechanisms. This review culminates in a tentative neurocognitive account of how psychedelics may promote long-term anxiolysis. We propose a model of anxiety related psych

A quantitative account of how limited information sharing undermines comprehensive literature syntheses.

Crucial aspects of reproducible, replicable and reusable science include the responsiveness of study authors for clarifications and the availability of research data and analysis results. Getting in contact with authors and obtaining information or results is, however, not always straight-forward. Here we report and discuss the issues and obstacles we faced when contacting authors of scientific papers with such requests. Our investigation rests on the results of a retrospective quantitative analysis of research data requests sent to authors of neuroimaging studies for a series of meta-analyses

From bad calls to system errors: accountability in automated and assisted sports officiating.

Automated and assisted officiating technologies are often introduced in elite sport as ways to improve accuracy, consistency, and fairness. Studies of VAR and Hawk-Eye show that these technologies can improve some decisions, but they also show that technology does not simply remove error from officiating. It can change where error is located, how it is described, and who is expected to answer for it. This article focuses on that shift. The main issue is not only whether automated systems reduce incorrect calls, but also how mistakes are explained when decisions depend on referees, protocols, t

Extracellular vesicles as new-age vaccine carriers: a focused account on viral diseases.

Extracellular vesicles are shifting the paradigm in vaccine development by virtue of their diverse benefits as carriers of immunogens to targeted hosts. These nano-sized naturally occurring biomolecules offer safety, transmissibility across membranes, excellent presentation of antigens and robust immune responses when engineered as vaccine delivery vehicles. Given the remarkable potential of these nanoscale biological carriers, the scientific community has witnessed substantial escalation in research activity highlighting their applications in vaccines and drug delivery. However, the research

Public Perceptions of Multiple Long-Term Conditions: An Analysis of Mass Observation Accounts.

INTRODUCTION: The growing number of people living with two or more long-term conditions presents challenges to medicine and society. While the terminology of 'multiple long-term conditions' (MLTC) or 'multimorbidity' has increasingly been adopted in research, policy and clinical practice, how the public responds to 'MLTC' remains underexplored. Given the important implications for research inclusion and intervention uptake, we aimed to address this gap by investigating public perceptions of MLTC. METHODS: Mass Observation Project respondents were invited to share their views on MLTC. We colla

Borophene-based electrocatalysts: an account of the fabrication approach, structural properties and electrochemical applications.

Borophene, a two-dimensional allotrope of boron positioned between metals and non-metals in the periodic table, has emerged as a promising material due to its electron-deficient bonding and unique structural characteristics. Although borophene shares certain similarities with graphene, its distinct atomic arrangements result in enhanced flexibility, intrinsic anisotropy, and a rippled morphology, which significantly influence its physicochemical properties. In recent years, borophene has attracted considerable attention owing to its high tensile strength, excellent electrical and thermal condu

Governance, coordination, and accountability in public health emergency preparedness and response: A scoping review.

Public health emergency preparedness depends not only on technical capacity but also on strong governance, coordinated multisector action, and clear accountability. However, evidence on how these systems function across different contexts remains fragmented. This scoping review synthesized global evidence on governance structures, coordination mechanisms, and accountability frameworks in public health emergency preparedness and response. Peer-reviewed and grey literature published between 2000 and 2025 was systematically searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and CINAHL, as well a

Beyond Cure: Care as Medicine's Constitutive End and the Limits of a Cure-Centered Account.

Cure occupies a prominent place among the goods of medicine, yet its limits raise a fundamental question about medicine's constitutive end. Chronic illness, disability, dementia, frailty, and dying reveal circumstances in which medicine retains substantial obligations despite the absence of cure. These cases invite renewed reflection on what medicine is fundamentally for. This article argues that care constitutes medicine's moral foundation and the broader framework within which cure derives its meaning and purpose. Drawing primarily on Edmund Pellegrino's philosophy of medicine, together with

When Innovation Leaves People Behind: Reframing Accountability in Commercial Digital Health.

Digital technologies are increasingly integrated across health care systems; however, accumulating evidence shows that these tools often perform unevenly across population groups. Biases in AI-enabled tools can reinforce existing health inequities, particularly when systems are developed and validated using datasets that exclude underserved populations. Studies demonstrate systematic underestimation of illness severity, diagnostic inaccuracies, and measurement bias affecting ethnic minority groups, rural populations, people with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness, and other groups

Late adolescents' accounts of marginalization in India: Towards a ground-up intersectional framework.

Within the broader context of limited published literature on identity-based marginalization in Majority World communities, research on adolescent experiences of marginalization in a diverse country like India is particularly scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore college-going adolescents' perceptions of commonly marginalized/stigmatized identities, the nature of marginalization, and the contexts within which it occurs using qualitative content analysis. Recruited from across India, participants were ethnolinguistically and religiously diverse late adolescents (across two samples, N
