Achievement of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Targets in Cardiac Rehabilitation: Impact of the 2019 ESC/EAS Dyslipidaemia Guidelines.

In 2019 the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) lowered the target values for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from <1.8 mmol/L to <1.4 mmol/L for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this study was to determine the clinical impact of the 2019 ESC/EAS dyslipidaemia guidelines on lipid-lowering therapies and achievement rates of LDL-C targets in a contemporary cohort of CAD patients participating in an ambulatory cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program. We conducted a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the Swiss Secondary Prevention Re…

Chinese Students' Perceptions of the Motivational Climate in College English Courses: Relationships Between Course Perceptions, Engagement, and Achievement.

Effective teachers create a motivational climate that engages students in course activities in ways that lead to increased learning and achievement. Although researchers have identified motivational climate variables that are associated with students' engagement and achievement, less is known about how these variables are related in different courses and cultures. The purpose of the two studies presented in this paper was to contribute to this research literature by examining these associations within the context of college English courses in two Chinese universities. Specifically, we investig…

Early supplemental parenteral nutrition for the achievement of nutritional goals in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients: An observational cohort study.

PURPOSE: Enteral nutrition (EN) often fails to achieve nutritional goals in neurocritical care patients. We sought to investigate the safety and utility of supplemental parenteral nutrition (PN) in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 70 consecutive patients with non-traumatic SAH admitted to the neurological intensive care unit of a tertiary referral center were prospectively collected and retrospectively analyzed. We targeted the provision of 20-25 kilocalories per kilogram bodyweight per day (kcal/kg/d) by enteral nutrition. Supplemental PN was given when

Early Puberty Is Associated With Higher Academic Achievement in Boys and Girls and Partially Explains Academic Sex Differences.

PURPOSE: On average, boys have lower academic achievement than girls. We investigated whether the timing of puberty is associated with academic achievement, and whether later puberty among boys contributes to the sex difference in academic achievement. METHOD: Examination scores at age 16 were studied among 13,477 British twins participating in the population-based Twins Early Development Study. A pubertal development scale, a height-based proxy of growth spurt, and age at menarche were used as indicators of puberty. Associations between puberty, sex, and academic achievement were estimated i…

Adherence to prescription guidelines and achievement of treatment goals among persons with coronary heart disease in Tromsø 7.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to clinical practice guidelines for coronary heart disease (CHD) reduces morbidity, mortality and treatment costs. We aimed to describe and compare adherence to prescription guidelines for persons with CHD, and explore its association with treatment goal achievement. METHOD: We included all participants reporting myocardial infarction, angina, percutaneous coronary intervention and/or coronary artery bypass surgery in the seventh wave of the Tromsø Study (2015-2016, n = 1483). Medication use and treatment goal measures (blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-chole…

Achievement of clinical isavuconazole blood concentrations in transplant recipients with isavuconazonium sulphate capsules administered via enteral feeding tube.

BACKGROUND: Isavuconazole is a triazole antifungal available in IV and capsule formulation. Prescribing information states that capsules should not be chewed, crushed, dissolved or opened because the drug was not studied in this manner. However, considering the pharmacokinetics of the capsules, we theorized opening and sprinkling the contents into an enteral feeding tube (EFT) would result in adequate absorption and systemic concentrations of isavuconazole. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether patients receiving isavuconazonium sulphate capsules via EFT would achieve clinical blood concentrations

Teachers' knowledge about language constructs related to literacy skills and student achievement in low socio-economic status schools.

Teachers' knowledge is a critical component to students learning to read proficiently. The present research sought to determine the literacy knowledge of 150 urban, elementary school teachers from 11 low socio-economic schools in one of nation's largest cities. Teachers' ability to understand concepts relating to phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle/phonics, and morphology as well as their knowledge about teaching these fundamental skills were assessed through a standardized measure. Using exploratory factor analysis to understand the latent constructs underlying th

Achievement in Nasal Symmetry after Cheiloplasty in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Infants Treated with Presurgical Nasoalveolar Molding.

BACKGROUND: The presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) technique gave a new perspective to presurgical infant orthopedics. Nasal reconstruction presents a challenge for the treating surgeons in case of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). PNAM facilitates the reshaping of the nasal cartilage and molding of maxillary arch preoperatively. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: The aim and objective of the present retrospective study was to analyze two-dimensional nasal changes before and after PNAM in patients with complete UCLP. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Twenty-two ULCP patients who underwent PNAM

Special health care needs explains the effect of extremely low birth weight on math but not language achievement.

OBJECTIVES: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1kg) adolescents are at risk for special health care needs (SHCN) and poor math achievement compared to normal birth weight (NBW) peers. SHCN are associated with poor academic achievement among NBW children. We hypothesize that SHCN explain the effect of ELBW on math achievement. METHODS: We compared age 14 Woodcock-Johnson Calculation standard scores between 181 ELBW infants and 115 NBW controls. Persistent SHCN included: 1) prescription medication or equipment use, 2) subspecialty or therapeutic service use, or 3) hospitalization. We used nonli…

The contribution of visual processing to academic achievement in adolescents born extremely preterm or extremely low birth weight.

Children born extremely preterm (EP, <28 weeks) and/or extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1000 g) have more academic deficiencies than their term-born peers, which may be due to problems with visual processing. The aim of this study is to determine (1) if visual processing is related to poor academic outcomes in EP/ELBW adolescents, and (2) how much of the variance in academic achievement in EP/ELBW adolescents is explained by visual processing ability after controlling for perinatal risk factors and other known contributors to academic performance, particularly attention and working memory. A…

Adding to the HIV Prevention Portfolio - the Achievement of Structural Changes by 13 Connect to Protect® Coalitions.

Opportunities to control risk factors that contribute to HIV transmission and acquisition extend far beyond individuals and include addressing social and structural determinants of HIV risk, such as inadequate housing, poor access to healthcare and economic insecurity. The infrastructure within communities, including the policies and practices that guide institutions and organizations, should be considered crucial targets for change. This paper examines the extent to which 13 community coalitions across the U.S. and Puerto Rico were able to achieve "structural change" objectives (i.e., new or

The role of maternal smoking in effect of fetal growth restriction on poor scholastic achievement in elementary school.

Fetal growth restriction and maternal smoking during pregnancy are independently implicated in lowering intellectual attainment in children. We hypothesized that only reduction of fetal growth that is attributable to extrinsic causes (e.g., maternal smoking) affects intellectual development of a child. Cross-sectional survey of 3,739 students in Nova Scotia (Canada) in 2003 was linked with the perinatal database, parental interviews on socio-demographic factors and the performance on standardized tests when primarily 11-12 years of age, thereby forming a retrospective cohort. Data was analyzed
