Discrimination of speaker size from syllable phrases.

The length of the vocal tract is correlated with speaker size and, so, speech sounds have information about the size of the speaker in a form that is interpretable by the listener. A wide range of different vocal tract lengths exist in the population and humans are able to distinguish speaker size from the speech. Smith et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117, 305-318 (2005)] presented vowel sounds to listeners and showed that the ability to discriminate speaker size extends beyond the normal range of speaker sizes which suggests that information about the size and shape of the vocal tract is segregat

Fetal exposures to sound and vibroacoustic stimulation.

Sounds in the environment of a pregnant woman penetrate the tissues and fluids surrounding the fetal head and stimulate the inner ear through a bone conduction route. The sounds available to the fetus are dominated by low-frequency energy, whereas energy above 0.5 kHz is attenuated by 40 to 50 dB. The fetus easily detects vowels, whereas consonants, which are higher in frequency and less intense than vowels, are largely unavailable. Rhythmic patterns of music are probably detected, but overtones are missing. A newborn human shows preference for his/her mother's voice and to musical pieces to w

Evoked oto-acoustic emissions from adults and infants: clinical applications.

Evoked oto-acoustic emissions (EOAEs), i.e. sounds emitted by the cochlea in response to a click, are recordable in the ear canal by a miniature microphone. They reflect an active cochlear biomechanism based upon OHC function, which accounts for the exquisite properties of sensitivity and frequency selectivity of the cochlea. EOAE recordings can therefore be considered an objective, easy, rapid and non-invasive audiological procedure which can be used to investigate the most sensitive part of the cochlea. From our experience of more than 300 recordings, we propose several clinical applications

Transtympanic electrocochleography in the diagnosis of retrocochlear tumours.

Transtympanic electrocochleography has been used as a diagnostic procedure in over 250 adult patients with sensorineural deafness. No complications have been encountered. Among these patients vestibulocochlear Schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) has been confirmed in 56 ears while 11 other ears have been found to be affected by other space-occupying lesions. As a result of our observations in these patients, we would like to propose that there are at least three separate criteria to be considered in reaching or strongly suspecting a diagnosis of such pathology. These are broadening of the action pot

Acoustic neuromodulation with or without micro-voltage tACS reduces post-concussive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) are common and disruptive, particularly in military service members (SM), yet there are no approved therapies targeting underlying physiological processes. This study was designed to compare acoustic neuromodulation using Cereset Research™ Standard Operating Procedures (CR-SOP), with Cereset Research Cranial Electrical Stimulation (CR-CES), on PPCS. METHODS: SM, veterans, or dependents with PPCS (Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory [NSI] Score ≥23) were randomized to receive 10 sessions of engineered tones linked to brainwaves (CR-SOP) or 5

Transcranial low-intensity ultrasound stimulation for treating central nervous system disorders: A promising therapeutic application.

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation is a neurostimulation technique that has gradually attracted the attention of researchers, especially as a potential therapy for neurological disorders, because of its high spatial resolution, its good penetration depth, and its non-invasiveness. Ultrasound can be categorized as high-intensity and low-intensity based on the intensity of its acoustic wave. High-intensity ultrasound can be used for thermal ablation by taking advantage of its high-energy characteristics. Low-intensity ultrasound, which produces low energy, can be used as a means to regulate the

Effect of frequency compression on fricative perception between normal-hearing English and Mandarin listeners.

High-frequency speech information is susceptible to inaccurate perception in even mild to moderate forms of hearing loss. Some hearing aids employ frequency-lowering methods such as nonlinear frequency compression (NFC) to help hearing-impaired individuals access high-frequency speech information in more accessible lower-frequency regions. As such techniques cause significant spectral distortion, tests such as the S-Sh Confusion Test help optimize NFC settings to provide high-frequency audibility with the least distortion. Such tests have been traditionally based on speech contrasts pertinent

A Guinea Pig Model Suggests That Objective Assessment of Acoustic Hearing Preservation in Human Ears With Cochlear Implants Is Confounded by Shifts in the Spatial Origin of Acoustically Evoked Potential Measurements Along the Cochlear Length.

OBJECTIVES: Our recent empirical findings have shown that the auditory nerve compound action potential (CAP) evoked by a low-level tone burst originates from a narrow cochlear region tuned to the tone burst frequency. At moderate to high sound levels, the origins shift to the most sensitive audiometric regions rather than the extended high-frequency regions of the cochlear base. This means that measurements evoked from extended high-frequency sound stimuli can shift toward the apex with increasing level. Here we translate this study to understand the spatial origin of acoustically evoked respo

Refining Measurements of Power Absorbance in Newborns: Probe Fit and Intrasubject Variability.

OBJECTIVES: Because unresolved debris in the ear canal or middle ear of newborns may produce high false positive rates on hearing screening tests, it has been suggested that an outer/middle ear measure can be included at the time of hearing screening. A potential measure is power absorbance (absorbance), which indicates the proportion of power in a broadband acoustic stimulus that is absorbed through the outer/middle ear. Although absorbance is sensitive to outer/middle dysfunction at birth, there is large variability that limits its accuracy. Acoustic leaks caused by poor probe fitting furthe

Perceptual Encoding in Auditory Brainstem Responses: Effects of Stimulus Frequency.

PURPOSE: A central question about auditory perception concerns how acoustic information is represented at different stages of processing. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) provides a potentially useful index of the earliest stages of this process. However, it is unclear how basic acoustic characteristics (e.g., differences in tones spanning a wide range of frequencies) are indexed by ABR components. This study addresses this by investigating how ABR amplitude and latency track stimulus frequency for tones ranging from 250 to 8000 Hz. METHOD: In a repeated-measures experimental design, lis

Objective audiometry with DPOAEs : New findings for generation mechanisms and clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are sound waves generated as byproducts of the cochlear amplifier. These are measurable in the auditory canal and represent an objective method for diagnosing functional disorders of the inner ear. Conventional DPOAE and TEOAE methods permit detection of hearing impairment, but with less than desirable accuracy. OBJECTIVE: By accounting for DPOAE generation mechanisms, the aim is to improve the accuracy of inner-ear diagnosis. METHODS: DPOAEs consist of two components, which emer

Band limited chirp stimulation in vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

Air conducted vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) can be elicited by various low frequency and intense sound stimuli, mainly clicks or short tone bursts (STB). Chirp stimuli are increasingly used in diagnostic audiological evaluations as an effective means to obtain acoustically evoked responses in narrowed or extended frequency ranges. We hypothesized in this study that band limited chirp stimulation, which covers the main sensitivity range of sound sensitive otolithic afferents (around 500 Hz), might be useful for application in cervical and ocular VEMP to air conduction. For this p

Tinnitus loudness in quiet and noise after resection of vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To use a loudness model to assess the influence of loudness recruitment on estimates of the loudness of tinnitus obtained by loudness matching; (2) To compare the effect of background noise on the loudness of tinnitus for individuals who are unilaterally deaf after resection of vestibular schwannoma (VS) and those with idiopathic tinnitus. BACKGROUND: After translabyrinthine resection of VS, patients experience unilateral deafness and tinnitus in the operated ear. Most complain that their tinnitus is more bothersome in noisy environments, unlike those with idiopathic tinnitus.

Stapedius reflex decay in normal hearing subjects.

The fatigue of the stapedius reflex was studied in 100 normal ears. Stimulus frequencies 500 and 1000 Hz were used, and the decrement of the stapedius reflex at 5, 10, and 15 dB above the reflex threshold was estimated. No decrement at all (less than 10% decay 10 sec after the onset of a stimulus 10 dB above the reflex threshold) was present in a majority of the ears. Between 27 and 58% of the ears showed reflex decay depending on variations of different factors such as stimulus frequency, intensity of the stimulus, and the method to register the reflex. Reflex decay was more often seen at 1000

Electro-acoustic pitch matching experiments in patients with single-sided deafness and a cochlear implant: Is there a need for adjustment of the default frequency allocation tables?

Patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) and a cochlear implant (CI) can compare the pitch of stimulated electrodes and acoustic tones. A pitch mismatch may negatively bear on the fusion of the signals from the two ears, which may limit auditory performance. We aimed to explore this mismatch, correlate it to performance, and finally to discuss its possible clinical consequences. Ten patients with SSD and a CI (Cochlear Ltd.) compared the pitch of electrical and acoustic stimuli. Patients had to choose one of two acoustic stimuli, with the pitch closest to the pitch of the electrical stimulus

Stapedius reflex thresholds obtained in a free sound field as an indicator for over- and understimulation in cochlear implant listeners.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine open field stapedius reflex thresholds (oSRTs) in CI patients with fittings based on subjective loudness ratings. A further objective was to compare these oSRTs and those of eSRT-based fittings that are similar to the oSRTs of normal hearing. DESIGN: Impedance measurements of the ear drum were taken while subjects were wearing their audio processors. The stapedius reflex was elicited by electrical stimulation transmitted through the activated CI system in response to an acoustic stimulus presented in the free sound field. STUDY SAMPLE: Subje

Investigating the hypotensive effect of focused ultrasound neuromodulation and barbiturate-loaded nanodroplets in healthy and hypertensive rats.

BACKGROUND: Current strategies for reducing blood pressure (BP) are ineffective and unsafe for many patient populations, including drug-resistant hypertension and during pregnancy. Stimulating the periaqueductal grey (PAG) region has shown promise in treating drug-resistant hypertension in patients using deep brain stimulation. OBJECTIVE: To develop a minimally invasive neuromodulation technique for the sustained treatment of hypertension. METHODS: We have investigated BP reduction using focused ultrasound (FUS) (540 kHz) and anesthetic-loaded ultrasound-responsive nanodroplets to deliver pe
