A new capnograph based on an electro acoustic sensor.

End tidal carbon dioxide measurements with an electro acoustic capnograph prototype have been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to verify that it is possible to obtain an adequate capnogram using the prototype and to investigate the influence of ambient temperature and humidity variations. By simultaneous measurements with a reference capnograph, on subjects performing exercise, hypo- and hyperventilation, P(ET)CO(2) readings from the reference were compared with the output signal from the prototype. The capnogram from the prototype correlated well with the reference in terms of breath t

[Epithelioid schwannoma of the acoustic nerve: a case report].

Epithelioid schwannomas mainly affect peripheral nerves and are frequently malignant. They are rarely encountered intracranially. Only five cases involving the eight nerve have been reported in the literature. We report the sixth case of epithelioid schwannoma of the acoustic nerve diagnosed in a 57 year-old woman operated for neurinoma of the right cerebellopontine angle. The patient was readmitted for local recurrence nine months later. Histologically, the tumour was composed of round or polygonal atypic cells associated with spindle cell areas. In our case, the local recurrence, nuclear ple

[Trigeminal neuralgia by an acoustic neuroma. The need of imaging].

In a 43-year old female with neuralgia of the second and third branch of the trigeminal nerve, the diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical findings. After the patient was treated with 2 x 200 mg of carbamazepine, all initial symptoms resolved, which confirmed the diagnosis. To distinguish between idiopathic and secondary trigeminal neuralgia, magnetic resonance imaging was scheduled. This investigation showed an acoustic neuroma in the cerebellopontine angle. Without magnetic resonance imaging this benign tumour would be diagnosed in a much later stage and the patient would have suffered u

Conservative management of sporadic unilateral acoustic neuromas.

Our objective was to review retrospectively patients with a unilateral acoustic neuroma managed by observation. One hundred patients with tumours (<24 mm) were followed a median 25.5 months. Thirty-six acoustic neuromas grew with four growth patterns. No factors were associated with growth. Eighty percent of growing tumours grew in the first year. Eleven patients proceeded to surgery. Twenty-two patients were eligible for hearing preservation surgery; five of the 15 available for analysis subsequently lost eligibility. In conclusion, selected patients can be safely observed with serial imaging

Exposure to loud noise and risk of acoustic neuroma.

Exposure to occupational loud noise has been previously identified as a possible risk factor for acoustic neuroma in only one relatively small (n = 86 cases) case-control study of men. The goal of the present study was to further examine the role of loud noise in acoustic neuroma etiology. In their population-based case-control study of both sexes conducted from 1999 to 2002 in Sweden, the authors compared reports on type and duration of occupational and nonoccupational loud noise exposure of 146 acoustic neuroma cases and 564 controls. Controls were randomly selected from the study base and w

Stress hormones in Ménière's disease and acoustic neuroma.

Stress has been postulated to trigger or contribute to inner ear pathologies but there is little objective evidence. We investigated stress hormones in Ménière's patients and patients with acoustic neuroma. Data were compared with those from a control group of patients with facial spasm. We assayed classic stress hormones including adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, growth hormone and prolactin. We found a strong positive correlation between cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone in Ménière patients and patients with acoustic neuroma but no correlation in patients with facial spasm. The

Cellular telephone use and risk of acoustic neuroma.

Despite limited evidence, cellular telephones have been claimed to cause cancer, especially in the brain. In this Danish study, the authors examined the possible association between use of cellular telephones and development of acoustic neuroma. Between 2000 and 2002, they ascertained 106 incident cases and matched these persons with 212 randomly sampled, population-based controls on age and sex. The data obtained included information on use of cellular telephones from personal interviews, data from medical records, and the results of radiologic examinations. The authors obtained information o

[Intraoperative auditory monitoring in acoustic neurinoma surgery].

Intraoperative auditory monitoring in acoustic neuroma surgery is used to improve residual hearing. Three techniques are available: monitoring of brainstem auditory evoked potentials, of electrocochleography or of direct eighth nerve compound action potential. The three techniques with their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The current trend is to monitor brainstem auditory evoked potentials using digital filtering or to monitor the eighth nerve compound action potential.

Mobile phone use and the risk of acoustic neuroma.

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency exposure from mobile phones is concentrated to the tissue closest to the handset, which includes the auditory nerve. If this type of exposure increases tumor risk, acoustic neuroma would be a potential concern. METHODS: In this population-based case-control study we identified all cases age 20 to 69 years diagnosed with acoustic neuroma during 1999 to 2002 in certain parts of Sweden. Controls were randomly selected from the study base, stratified on age, sex, and residential area. Detailed information about mobile phone use and other environmental exposures was coll

Management of acoustic neuroma in the only hearing ear.

Patients with acoustic neuroma in their only hearing ear are not frequently seen in clinical practice. Managing this group of patients is a challenge to both the patient and surgeon. In this study we report on five cases of acoustic neuroma in an only hearing ear. Our decision for conservative management of those patients with regular follow-up using auditory brain stem response and magnetic resonance imaging is discussed. Other management options currently available are reviewed as well.

[EGG and acoustic test for the diagnosis of laryngeal diseases].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between electroglottography/acoustic test parameter and disease diagnosis. METHOD: 3.0 software by Dr. Speech was used to test synchronically the electroglottography and acoustic test parameter of 503 cases so as to make a statistical analysis and comparison. RESULT: The shimmer was similar with the jitter on the inspection of polyp of vocal cord and vocal nodules, but the shimmer was more susceptive than the jitter. Compared with the healthy group, mean F0, jitter and shimmer of polyp of vocal cord increased, while the Harmonic-to-Noise decreased, so d

[Acoustic discomfort in non-industrial indoor environments].

The number of working activities carried out in non-industrial indoor environments that can cause acoustic discomfort is so high that it is impossible to deal with all of them here satisfactorily. Therefore, following a briefing discussion of the known effects of noise on man, this paper will review the current legislation regarding the prevention of occupational noise effects in our country today (D.Lgs. 15 Agosto 1991, N. 277), in the light of important changes introduced by the EU directive 2003/10/CE. Finally we will discuss the problems deriving from exposure to noise on subjects working

Management of acoustic neuromas in the elderly: retrospective study.

The wide availability of gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI-Gd) has led to the discovery of an increasing number of small and less symptomatic acoustic neuromas in elderly patients. We conducted a retrospective study in order to obtain data on outcomes and complications associated with different management strategies that would be useful in establishing a management guideline. We identified 44 patients aged 65 to 77 years with acoustic neuromas who had been managed with either surgery or simple observation with MRI-Gd imaging. Of the entire group, 36 patients had tumors larger
