[Climate change and clinical implications].

Climate change and global warming present major clinical challenges. We focus on cardiovascular and renal clinical consequences. The physiological adaptations and physiopathological effects are described, especially in vulnerable populations. The clinical consequences during heat waves, are mainly cardiovascular with stroke, acute ischemic heart disease and sudden death increased by up to 40%. Likewise, episodes of acute renal failure, electrolyte disturbances and kidney stones disease increase. The chronic consequences should not be overlooked, as the risk of heart failure also increases in h

VestAid: A Tablet-Based Technology for Objective Exercise Monitoring in Vestibular Rehabilitation.

(1) Background: Current vestibular rehabilitation therapy is an exercise-based approach aimed at promoting gaze stability, habituating symptoms, and improving balance and walking in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). A major component of these exercises is the adaptation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and habituation training. Due to acute injury, the gain of the VOR is usually reduced, resulting in eye movement velocity that is less than head movement velocity. There is a higher chance for the success of the therapy program if the patient (a) understands the exercise proc

Intermuscular coupling and postural control in unilateral transfemoral amputees - a pilot study.

The dynamics of the adjustment of center of pressure (CoP) has been utilized to understand motor control in human pathologies characterized by impairments in postural balance. The control mechanisms that maintain balance can be investigated via the analysis of muscle recruitment using electromyography (EMG) signals. In this work, we combined these two techniques to investigate balance control during upright standing in transfemoral unilateral amputees wearing a prosthesis. The dynamics of the CoP adjustments and EMG-EMG coherence between four muscles of the trunk and lower limb of 5 unilateral

A method to characterize compensatory oculomotor strategies following simulated central vision loss.

Loss of central vision can be partially compensated by increased use of peripheral vision. For example, patients experiencing central vision loss due to disease (macular degeneration) or healthy participants trained with simulated central vision loss, tend to develop eccentric fixation spots for reading or other visual tasks. In both patients and in simulated conditions, there are substantial individual variations in the effective use of the periphery. The factors driving these individual differences are still unclear. Although early approaches have described some dimensions of these strategie

Critical periods of brain development.

Brain plasticity is maximal at specific time windows during early development known as critical periods (CPs), during which sensory experience is necessary to establish optimal cortical representations of the surrounding environment. After CP closure, a range of functional and structural elements prevent passive experience from eliciting significant plastic changes in the brain. The transition from a plastic to a more fixed state is advantageous as it allows for the sequential consolidation and retention of new and more complex perceptual, motor, and cognitive functions. However, the formation

Calcium homeostasis during hibernation and in mechanical environments disrupting calcium homeostasis.

To maintain calcium homeostasis during physical inactivity, precise coordination is necessary between different organs of the body. There are a number of factors which alter an organism's calcium balance, such as growth, aging, physical inactivity and acquired or inherited disorders which ultimately lead to bone loss. In non-hibernating mammals, physical inactivity causes bone loss which may not be completely recoverable during the lifespan of an individual despite a resumption of activity. Extreme physical inactivity and nutritional deprivation are two other important factors that lead to bon

Slow Temporal Dynamics of Motion-Induced Brightness Shift Reveals Impact of Adaptation.

Brightness of an object is determined by various factors including ambient illumination, surface reflectance of the object, and spatial and temporal relation between the object and its surrounding context. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the motion of an object alters its own and nearby object's appearance such as brightness and color. This study aims to unveil mechanisms of the motion-induced brightness shift by measuring its temporal dynamics. We found that the motion-induced brightness shift occurred instantaneously with the motion onset when the motion was introduced abruptly. Howe

Physiological, Genetic, and Transcriptomic Analysis of Alcohol-Induced Delay of Escherichia coli Death.

When Escherichia coli K-12 is inoculated into rich medium in batch culture, cells experience five phases. While the lag and logarithmic phases are mechanistically fairly well defined, the stationary phase, death phase, and long-term stationary phase are less well understood. Here, we characterize a mechanism of delaying death, a phenomenon we call the "alcohol effect," where the addition of small amounts of certain alcohols prolongs stationary phase for at least 10 days longer than in untreated conditions. We show that the stationary phase is extended when ethanol is added above a minimum thre

Stress-induced adaptations in Salmonella: A ground for shaping its pathogenesis.

Microorganisms are able to adapt to multiple adverse environmental conditions that facilitate their survival. These microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and protozoans are exposed to different abiotic and biotic challenges throughout their life. Adaptations help these organisms to overcome the challenges and evolve as successful pathogens which at the same time might lead to severe disease outcome. The intracellular gram-negative pathogen Salmonella, the causative agent of typhoid fever has evolved into a successful pathogen and shows increasing host mortality and morbidit

Metabolic and neuroendocrine adaptations to undernutrition in anorexia nervosa: from a clinical to a basic research point of view.

The exact mechanisms linking metabolic and neuroendocrine adaptations to undernutrition and the pathophysiology of anorexia nervosa (AN) are not fully understood. AN is a psychiatric disorder of complex etiology characterized by extreme starvation while the disease is progressing into a chronic state. Metabolic and endocrine alterations associated to this disorder are part of a powerful response to maintain whole body energy homeostasis. But these modifications may also contribute to associated neuropsychiatric symptoms (reward abnormalities, anxiety, depression) and thus participate to sustai

Are the surface areas of the gills and body involved with changing metabolic scaling with temperature?

The metabolic-level boundaries (MLB) hypothesis proposes that metabolic level mediates the relative influence of surface area (SA)- versus volume-related metabolic processes on the body-mass scaling of metabolic rate in organisms. The variation in the scaling of SA may affect how metabolic level affects the metabolic scaling exponent. This study aimed to determine the influence of increasing metabolic level at a higher temperature on the metabolic scaling exponent of the goldfish and determine the link between metabolic scaling exponents and SA parameters of both gills and body. The SA of gill

Neuromuscular adaptations in shoulder function and dysfunction.

Neuromuscular activity, organized in coordinated patterns, forms the basis of task-specific function in sports and exercise. The content and extent of these patterns may be variable, but include elements of activation/inhibition, co-activation, concentric/eccentric activation, proximal-to-distal activation, plyometric activation, and preactivation stiffness. They may be based on inherent neuromuscular architecture, but are commonly affected by positive or negative adaptations to imposed functional demands. Positive neuromuscular adaptations improve the efficiency of performing the task, which

Variability and constraint of vertebral formulae and proportions in colugos, tree shrews, and rodents, with special reference to vertebral modification by aerodynamic adaptation.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study is to provide the first large data set on vertebral formulae and proportions, and examine their relationship with different locomotive modes in colugos (Dermoptera), tree shrews (Scandentia), and rodents (Rodentia), which have been considered less variable because they were thought to have a plesiomorphic number of 19 thoracolumbar vertebrae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data included 33 colugos and 112 tree shrews, which are phylogenetically sister taxa, and 288 additional skeletons from 29 other mammalian species adapted to different locomotive modes,

The effect of limb amputation on standing weight distribution in the remaining three limbs in dogs.

Despite the fact that limb amputation is a commonly performed procedure in veterinary medicine, quantitative data regarding outcomes are lacking. The intention of this study was to evaluate the effect of limb amputation on weight distribution to the remaining three limbs at a stance in dogs. Ten dogs with a prior forelimb amputation and ten dogs with a prior hindlimb amputation; all of which had no history of orthopaedic or neural disease in the remaining three limbs were included in the study. Standing weight bearing was evaluated with a commercial stance analyzer in all dogs. Five valid tria

The fetal brain sparing response to hypoxia: physiological mechanisms.

How the fetus withstands an environment of reduced oxygenation during life in the womb has been a vibrant area of research since this field was introduced by Joseph Barcroft, a century ago. Studies spanning five decades have since used the chronically instrumented fetal sheep preparation to investigate the fetal compensatory responses to hypoxia. This defence is contingent on the fetal cardiovascular system, which in late gestation adopts strategies to decrease oxygen consumption and redistribute the cardiac output away from peripheral vascular beds and towards essential circulations, such as

Shifting effects of physiological integration on performance of a clonal plant during submergence and de-submergence.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Submergence and de-submergence are common phenomena encountered by riparian plants due to water level fluctuations, but little is known about the role of physiological integration in clonal plants (resource sharing between interconnected ramets) in their adaptation to such events. Using Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) as an example, this study tested the hypotheses that physiological integration will improve growth and photosynthetic capacity of submerged ramets during submergence and will promote their recovery following de-submergence. METHODS: Connected cl

Protective buttressing of the hominin face.

When humans fight hand-to-hand the face is usually the primary target and the bones that suffer the highest rates of fracture are the parts of the skull that exhibit the greatest increase in robusticity during the evolution of basal hominins. These bones are also the most sexually dimorphic parts of the skull in both australopiths and humans. In this review, we suggest that many of the facial features that characterize early hominins evolved to protect the face from injury during fighting with fists. Specifically, the trend towards a more orthognathic face; the bunodont form and expansion of t

Motion sickness adaptation to Coriolis-inducing head movements in a sustained G flight simulator.

BACKGROUND: Technological advances have allowed centrifuges to become more than physiological testing and training devices; sustained G, fully interactive flight simulation is now possible. However, head movements under G can result in vestibular stimulation that can lead to motion sickness (MS) symptoms that are potentially distracting, nauseogenic, and unpleasant. In the current study an MS adaptation protocol was tested for head movements under +Gz. METHODS: Experienced pilots made 14 predetermined head movements in a sustained G flight simulator (at 3 +Gz) on 5 consecutive days and 17 d a

Eye size variation reflects habitat and daily activity patterns in colubrid snakes.

The functioning of the vertebrate eye depends on its absolute size, which is presumably adapted to specific needs. Eye size variation in lidless and spectacled colubrid snakes was investigated, including 839 specimens belonging to 49 genera, 66 species and subspecies. Variations of adult eye diameters (EDs) in both absolute and relative terms between species were correlated with parameters reflecting behavioral ecology. In absolute terms, eye of arboreal species was larger than in terrestrial and semiaquatic species. For diurnal species, EDs of terrestrial species do not differ from semiaquati

A new way of thinking about complications of prematurity.

The morbidity and mortality of preterm infants are impacted by their ability to maintain physiologic homeostasis using metabolic, endocrine, and immunologic mechanisms independent of the mother's placenta. Exploring McEwen's allostatic load model in preterm infants provides a new way to understand the altered physiologic processes associated with frequently occurring complications of prematurity such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, and retinopathy of prematurity. The purpose of this article is to present a new model to enhance understandin
