Metaphoric language and the articulation of emotions by people affected by motor neurone disease.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the use of metaphoric language to convey emotion in interviews with people affected by motor neurone disease, a progressive neurological condition that sits between chronic and terminal illness. METHODS: Secondary analysis of 46 interviews with people affected by motor neurone disease in the United Kingdom (35 individuals with the condition, 11 carers). RESULTS: Metaphor and figurative language was used to communicate the intensely emotional experiences of being diagnosed with and living with motor neurone disease. We focus on three pervasive themes that were threaded t

A comparison of auditory hallucinations in a psychiatric and non-psychiatric group.

OBJECTIVES: To compare auditory hallucinations in a psychiatric and non-psychiatric sample. DESIGN: Between-participants group design: a psychiatric group of 14 patients with schizophrenia, and a non-psychiatric group of 16 participants with tinnitus. METHOD: Participants were interviewed using the Mental Health Research Institute Unusual Perceptions Scale (MUPS). RESULTS: The type of hallucinations differed: participants with tinnitus predominantly heard music, whereas the patients with schizophrenia heard voices speaking. The groups also differed in their explanations of the hallucination

A developmental-contextual perspective on youth covictimization by community violence.

Witnessing violence within the community-covictimization-has been recognized as a threat to the optimal development of youth. Following a discussion of methodological issues that plague covictimization research, the literature on covictimization is reviewed, beginning with findings on its prevalence. Correlates of covictimization are then examined within the Shakoor and Chalmers framework, comprising emotional, cognitive, and behavioral domains. Recent lines of research investigating interactions among these three domains are also explored. Further, a developmental-contextual approach toward s

[The process of adaptation for relatives of cancer patients].

The purpose of this study was to explain the adaptation process of a family member of a cancer patient. The theoretical frameworks were the stress- and adaptation theories. The study was implemented by interviewing one family member of each of the 15 cancer patients in question. The interviews were recorded and the material was analyzed. For all of them the family member's taking ill was a shock. Ten of the test persons reacted physiologically. All of them used problem focused coping methods and almost all of them emotion focused coping methods as well. Every test person had received social su

Simple, effective treatment of agoraphobia.

For effective treatment of agoraphobia both patient and therapist must understand the mechanisms of sensitization and self-desensitization. Rather than aiming to adapt to difficult situations, to achieve desensitization by suggestions, or to avoid panic, the agoraphobe must learn to pass through panic and to rid oneself of drug dependency. This method of self-desensitization will, as a rule, achieve results quickly and does not necessarily depend upon finding the cause of the original sensitization.

Subjective well-being mediates the association between caregiver ability and psychological resilience in postoperative older patients with hip fractures.

BACKGROUND: The postsurgical rehabilitation process of older patients with hip fractures is prolonged. During rehabilitation, good psychological resilience aids patients in maintaining an optimistic attitude and enhancing their ability to deal with the associated stress. However, the caregiver ability on the psychological resilience of patients is not clear. This study aimed to examine the associated with the caregiver ability on the psychological resilience and the subjective well-being of patients. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional study and was conducted using a random sampling meth

On compensatory strategies and computational models: the case of pure alexia.

The article is concerned with inferences from the behaviour of neurological patients to models of normal function. It takes the letter-by-letter reading strategy common in pure alexic patients as an example of the methodological problems involved in making such inferences that compensatory strategies produce. The evidence is discussed on the possible use of three ways the letter-by-letter reading process might operate: "reversed spelling"; the use of the phonological input buffer as a temporary holding store during word building; and the use of serial input to the visual word-form system entir

Worry and rumination: differential associations with anxious and depressive symptoms and coping behavior.

Worry and rumination are closely allied cognitive processes that impact on the experience of anxious and depressive symptoms. Using a prospective design, this study examined overlapping and distinct features of worry and rumination in relation to symptoms and coping behavior in a nonclinical sample of Singaporean college students. Worry and rumination were highly correlated, but they retained distinct components that predicted anxious and depressive symptoms differentially within and across time. Specifically, worry was uniquely associated with anxious and depressive symptoms whereas ruminatio

[Etiology and pathogenesis of peptic ulcer].

PU is a disease having many etiologies. The psychological constitutional type, low psychological adaptability and vegetative imbalance are the main causes in the pathogenesis of the disease. Chronic and acute stresses lead to vegetative tone disturbance, immunological imbalance, reduced resistance to HP, hypercoagulation and local blood flow impairment, causing hemorrhage and necrosis in the mucous coat of the gastroduodenal area.

Perceptual awareness and motor expertise in the temporal dynamics of adaptation to unexpected tempo changes.

Adaptation to unexpected tempo step changes may vary with perceptual awareness and motor expertise across the post-change time course. This study examined how trial-level Detection and motor expertise, operationalised as professional dance training, were associated with post-change adaptation. Two finger-tapping experiments used unexpected step changes from a 500-ms baseline inter-stimulus interval: near-threshold perturbations (± 10 ms) in Experiment 1 and supra-threshold perturbations (± 50, ± 100, and ± 150 ms) in Experiment 2. Forty adults completed Experiment 1 (21 dancers and 19 non-danc

Impaired short temporal interval discrimination in a dyslexic adult.

The ability to discriminate short temporal intervals was examined in a dyslexic adult (E.C.) and six matched controls. Listeners had to decide whether the second interval was shorter or longer than a standard (target) interval. Each interval was defined as the silent duration between two successive brief tones. Eight target intervals were used, ranging from 100 to 1,200 ms in duration. At each target interval, the differential threshold (DL) for duration was assessed, with the use of an adaptive psychophysical procedure. The results show that E.C.'s differential threshold values were much larg

The experiential meaning of eating, handicap, adaptedness, and confirmation in living with esophageal dysphagia.

This article is mainly based on interview studies of pensioners' (n = 62), patients' (n = 19), and students' (n = 87) experiences of living with longstanding esophageal dysphagia. The aim is to describe the experiential meaning of dysphagic patients' lives by interpreting their experiences, problems, and emotions and by specifying these into scales according to the model of goal-directed action by Pörn [43-49]. The experiential meaning will be articulated in terms of attainment or nonattainment of goals in relation to eating, handicap, adaptedness, and confirmation. In the experiential meaning

Exploring the role of psychological flexibility in relationship functioning among couples coping with prostate cancer: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Prostate cancer (PCa) is an external stressor that can affect both patients and partners, but dyadic research in this area is limited. This study, guided by the vulnerability-stress-adaptation model, examines how PCa distress affects relationship satisfaction through psychological flexibility and self-esteem. METHODS: The study used a cross-sectional design with a total sample size of 314 dyads. The actor-partner interdependence model was applied to examine both actor and partner effects. Covariates were also examined. RESULTS: PCa distress negatively predicted psychological flexi

Deciphering the association between mortality salience and the "lying flat" movement: a social media analysis.

INTRODUCTION: When individuals face overwhelming situations, such as the heightened awareness of mortality triggered by the pandemic, they may adopt the "lying flat" response. "Lying flat," a movement on Chinese social media platforms, refers to the adoption of a minimalist lifestyle and the rejection of intensive life or work goals. However, the psychological mechanisms driving this phenomenon remain underexplored. Drawing on psychological perspectives of existential threat and coping strategies, this study aims to investigate whether mortality salience is associated with "lying flat" discour

An analysis of key factors related to adaptation during pregnancy that contribute to the risk of perinatal depression.

BACKGROUND: The third trimester of pregnancy involves multiple changes to which women need to adapt. When such adaptation to pregnancy is unsuccessful, this can increase the risk to suffer perinatal depression. Yet, an integrative analysis of different forms of adaptation to pregnancy and their specific contributions to perinatal depression is still missing. OBJECTIVES: This study thus aimed to advance knowledge on the role of specific indicators of adaptation to pregnancy as predictors of risk for or protection against perinatal depression. DESIGN AND METHODS: A randomized non-discriminator

Coping and violence exposure as predictors of psychological functioning in domestic violence survivors.

This study examines the differential effects of adult and childhood physical and psychological abuse, abuse-specific coping, and psychological adjustment in battered women seeking emergency shelter. Multivariate regression analyses confirmed the devastating impact of psychological abuse (childhood and concurrent) on battered women's adjustment. The results corroborated prior research suggesting a cumulative vulnerability to psychological victimization in a substantial proportion of residents. Unexpectedly, frequency of physical violence was unrelated to women's distress. The study argues that

Financial concerns and psychological distress among Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic: the moderating role of benefit finding and received pay.

INTRODUCTION: The potential buffering role of benefit finding, a cognitive and behavior adaptation process, in the relationship between financial concerns and psychological distress is not well understood among Asian American populations. Our study examined how financial concerns impacted Asian Americans' mental health, specifically in the presence of benefit finding and received pay during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Survey-weighted data from the 2021 Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander COVID-19 Needs Assessment Project was analyzed to test the associations between financ

Psychological Resilience to Trauma and Risk of COVID-19 Infection and Somatic Symptoms Across 2 Years.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to trauma increases the risk of somatic symptoms, as well as acute and chronic physical diseases. However, many individuals display psychological resilience, showing positive psychological adaptation despite trauma exposure. Resilience to prior trauma may be a protective factor for physical health during subsequent stressors, including the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Using data from 528 US adults in a longitudinal cohort study, we examined psychological resilience to lifetime potentially traumatic events early in the pandemic and the risk of COVID-19 infection and somatic
