CTNNB1-related neurodevelopmental disorder with spastic diplegia and visual defect (NEDSDV) is a rare genetic condition characterized by developmental delay, axial hypotonia, peripheral spasticity, and ophthalmologic abnormalities. Due to its phenotypic overlap with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy, NEDSDV may be underdiagnosed, and its anesthetic implications remain undocumented. We report the perioperative management of a two-year-old female with NEDSDV undergoing elective adenoidectomy and myringotomy in a hospital-based ambulatory surgical center. Anesthetic care was individualized, with e…

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is the most frequent non-hereditary autoinflammator … bort flares but cannot prevent subsequent disease episodes over time. Tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy has proved to be successful in some pediatric patients, as proven by different studies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the activity of paediatric otolaryngology services required for children with Down's syndrome in a t … s media, hearing loss and cardiac disease. The most common otolaryngology procedures performed were adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, grommet insertion and bone-anchored hearing aid implant surgery.
CONCLUSION: ENT manifestations of Down's syndrome are common. Greater provisions need to be made to streamline the otolaryngology services for children and improve tra …

Adenoids and/or tonsil inflammation with concomitant obstructive hypertrophy is one of the oldest and most common pediatric problems. Adenoids are a component of Waldeyer's ring and because of their anatomic position can be relevant in the pathogenesis of otitis media when they are inflamed and/or enlarged. Adenoid pads can create mechanical eustachian tube obstruction. Therefore, in some cases, adenoidectomy may have a role in the clinical management of otitis media with effusion. However, eustachian tube dysfunction related to the adenoids may also have an allergy-related functional componen…

OBJECTIVES: Investigation of Helicobacter pylori (HP) colonization in adenoid and tonsil tissues by using the CLO (Campylobacter-like organism) test.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. Included in the study were 19 patients aged 4 to 38 who had undergone an adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, or adenotonsillectomy procedure under local or general anesthesia.
METHODS: Tissue pieces with diameters of 2 mm, which had been obtained from each adenoid and tonsil specimens in the early postoperative stage, were placed in kits specially prepared for HP (CLO test). Color changes were noted after 20 …

Tonsils and adenoids are secondary lymphoid organs exposed to the environment. The most important classifications of AIDS include the lymphocyte subsets of peripheral blood. We have studied the lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood and secondary lymphoid organs in a control group of children suffering adenotonsillar pathology and in five children with AIDS and the same adenotonsillar pathology. The antigen surface markers were determined by flow cytometry in lymphocytes isolated from peripheral blood, and from tonsils and adenoids after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, in the control group an…

A questionnaire, designed to assess bleeding/bruising tendencies, was administered to 251 otherwise healthy children undergoing a tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. 23 children with excessive bleeding during or after the operation, with a long bleeding time or who reported taking aspirin recently were excluded, to give a population of 228 non-bleeders. For comparative purposes, 31 patients with bleeding disorders (von Willebrand's disease and/or platelet function defects) were studied. A considerable proportion of "non-bleeding" children reported easy bruising (24%), had bruises at least once…

To investigate the microbial flora of the tonsils and adenoids, the core tissue from the tonsils and adenoids of 50 children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for either recurrent infection or airway obstruction was cultured aerobically and anaerobically, and the number of bacterial colonies was quantitated. The most common organisms isolated were alpha-hemolytic streptococci, nonpathogenic Neisseria species, Haemophilus species, Staphylococcus aureus, and Corynebacterium species. No anaerobes were identified. Bacterial isolates from the tonsils and adenoids were similar in number and…

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with the occurrence of viral or ba … ed to other viral or bacterial infections of childhood, nor to routine vaccinations, tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy or appendectomy. Our findings suggest a difference between MS patients and controls with respect to environment before school age, the former being less exposed to air-borne infections.

A girl in her early childhood years (2-5 years) presented with multiple episodes of meningitis. Following the sixth episode, she clinically deteriorated with the development of multiple brain abscesses and hydrocephalus, requiring a ventriculoperitoneal shunt and prolonged antibiotic and antifungal therapy. MRI of the brain revealed a possible anatomical defect at the C1 level of the cervical spine, communicating into the nasopharyngeal cavity. Needle aspiration of the brainstem collection confirmed Aspergillus fumigatus on molecular testing. A transoral endoscopic adenoidectomy exposed an und…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether mouth breathing children present the same cephalometric patterns as patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).
METHOD: Cephalometric variables were traced and measured on vertical lateral cephalometric radiographs. The cephalometric measurements of 52 mouth and 90 nose breathing children were compared with apneic patients. The children had not undergone adenoidectomy or tonsillectomy and had not had or were not receiving orthodontic or orthopedic treatment.
RESULTS: Mouth breathing children showed same cephalometric pattern observed in patients wit…

Management of OSAS traditionally includes tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy to which most of the cases respond.
