Prevalence and associated factors of pulmonary hypertension in Kenyan children with adenoid or adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

OBJECTIVES: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is a common condition in childhood, whose serious complications of pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale are devastating but local prevalence is unknown. This study determined the prevalence and associated factors of pulmonary hypertension in children with adenoid or adenotonsillar hypertrophy at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya. METHODS: This was a cross sectional hospital based survey conducted among children below 12 years of age with clinical and radiological adenoid hypertrophy attending the ear, nose and throat (ENT) outpatient clinic and gener

Relative etiological importance of adenoid hypertrophy versus sinusitis in children with persistent rhinorrhoea.

AIM: Aplastic anemia (AA) affects the Asian population two to three fold more than people in other regions. Besides the host genetics and socioeconomic status, several other environmental exposures have been linked with an AA etiology. We aimed to examine the association of various environmental exposures with AA occurrence among Pakistani individuals. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan, where cases (diagnosed AA patients) were selected from the National Institute of Blood Disease and Bone Marrow Transplantation (NIBD), while for each case, a single

Report of two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of Bartholin's gland and review of literature.

OBJECTIVE: Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of Bartholin's gland is a rare gynecologic malignancy. We report two cases from primary treatment to recurrence and the adjuvant treatment. CASE REPORT: A woman aged 37 years presented with a mass on the right posterior labia minor and underwent right radical hemi-vulvectomy and right-side inguino-femoral node dissection. Final pathology showed ACC arising from Bartholin's gland with positive margins. She received adjuvant external beam radiation to the pelvis, right vulva, and groin area. However, distal metastasis occurred 42 months after in

Severe ectopic cushing syndrome caused by adenoid cystic carcinoma of a salivary gland.

OBJECTIVE: We present a rare case of Cushing syndrome due to ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretion (EAS). To our knowledge only two similar cases have been previously reported. METHODS: This is a case report of EAS by a metastatic lingual adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). RESULTS: The patient was diagnosed of a Cushing syndrome caused by tumoral EAS two years after initial cancer diagnosis. Clinical presentation included asthenia, insomnia, hypertension, acne, and hyperpigmentation developing in a period of two months. Laboratory and imaging testing revealed hypokalemic metaboli

A case of adenoid cystic carcinoma presenting as Garcin's syndrome without mass formation.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant neoplasm that commonly arises in the major or minor salivary gland and usually forms mass lesions. Here, we report a case of ACC involving a 56-year-old man, who displayed right multiple cranial nerve palsies with ipsilateral severe facial pain but not any mass formation. Right submaxillary gland biopsy after repeated challenges at last revealed the primary focus of ACC with perineural invasion and without lymph node metastasis. The neurological manifestations were considered to be attributed to the perineural spread of ACC. It is extremely rare fo

Relationship between adenoid size and severity of obstructive sleep apnea in preschool children.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the contributions of adenoid and tonsil sizes to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in normal-weight children in two age categories: preschool and schoolchildren. METHODS: Fifty-eight normal-weight (body mass index z-score<2) symptomatic children with OSAS (apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 2) were evaluated. The patients were divided into two age categories: preschool (age<6; n=33) and schoolchildren (age ≥ 6; n=25). Polysomnographic findings and adenoid and tonsil sizes were compared. The relative contributions of body mass index and adenoid and tonsil sizes were also in

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the Bartholin's gland: case report and systematic review of the literature.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the Bartholin's gland is a rare malignancy of the female genital tract. Seventy-nine cases have been reported in the literature. A 40-year-old women presented to our clinic with twice locally recurrent ACC of Bartholin's gland of the left vulva despite hemivulvectomy. Adjuvant radiotherapy was delivered after the third resection. There was no local recurrence after three years follow-up, although she developed lung metastases that remain under control with oral cyclophosphamide. Our case confirms the literature review, which indicates a slow growing tumor with

Non-surgical treatment of adenoidal hypertrophy: the role of treating IgE-mediated inflammation.

Adenoidal hypertrophy (AH) and adenotonsillar hypertrophy are common disorders in the pediatric population and can cause symptoms such as mouth breathing, nasal congestion, hyponasal speech, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as well as chronic sinusitis and recurrent otitis media. More serious long-term sequelae, typically secondary to OSA, include neurocognitive abnormalities (e.g. behavioral and learning difficulties, poor attention span, hyperactivity, below average intelligence quotient); cardiovascular morbidity (e.g. decreased right ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricul

Hepatic metastasis as an initial manifestation of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma: Cytologic diagnosis.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant tumor of the salivary glands. It is slow growing and is characterized by the delayed development of distant metastasis, which may develop even a decade or more after initial treatment of the primary tumor. We present the case of a 68-year-old male with complaints and radiological findings suggestive of primary hepatocellular carcinoma. However, fine-needle aspiration findings showed metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma. A retrospective clinical and ultrasound examination of the patient revealed a small asymptomatic enlargement of the submandibular sali

Intranasal corticosteroids for nasal airway obstruction in children with moderate to severe adenoidal hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Adenoidal hypertrophy is generally considered a common condition of childhood. When obstructive sleep apnoea or cardio-respiratory syndrome occurs, adenoidectomy is generally indicated. In less severe cases, non-surgical interventions may be considered, however few medical alternatives are currently available. Intranasal steroids may be used to reduce nasal airway obstruction. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of intranasal corticosteroids for improving nasal airway obstruction in children with moderate to severe adenoidal hypertrophy. SEARCH STRATEGY: Our search included t

Skull base invasion of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland : a case report.

Although adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lacrimal gland is a rarely encountered orbital tumor, it invades intracranially more frequently than carcinomas of other glands in the head and neck. A 52-year-old man underwent orbital exenteration and resection of intracranially extended tumor via a fronto-orbito-zygomatic approach in combination with a transfacial approach. Histopathologically, the tumor showed perineural, vascular, and lymphatic invasion. Additionally, he received radiotherapy (60 Gy) and adjuvant systemic cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy due to residual tumor in the

[The influence of tree pollen on the adenoid size in children with periodic (seasonal) allergic rhinitis].

INTRODUCTION: Allergic sensitization of the airways occurs not only in the mucosa of the shock organ, but also in the lymphatic stations draining these structures. The lymphatic structure closest to the nasal mucosa in humans is the adenoid. Many researches show that in part of children allergic rhinitis can be a risk factor for adenoid hypertrophy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used acoustic rhinometry and endoscopy to evaluate the influence of the birch pollination on the adenoid size in 67 children between 5 and 12 years old. Four separate groups of children were examined. The study group consi

Adenoid cystic carcinoma with collagenous spherulosis-like structures in the breast: report of a case.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is rare in breast carcinomas and has a relatively better prognosis than other histological types. Although the tumor shows various growth patterns, such as those of salivary glands or other organs, the papillary growth pattern is uncommon. Collagenous spherulosis (CS), consisting of intraluminal clusters of eosinophilic spherules situated adjacent to, or encompassed by, usually benign proliferative epithelium, is also a rare incidental microscopic finding that ACC must be distinguished from, and it has never been reported in association with ACC. We present a cas
