In order to know the correlation of a drug with high affinity to melanin in the iris ciliary body with the amount of melanin contained in the iris ciliary tissues, an in vivo study was performed on pigmented rabbits with brown or blue irises and albino rabbits. Corneal transparency is maintained by an active transport system, located at the endothelial cell membranes. This bicarbonate-dependent pump counteracts the tendency of the corneal stroma to absorb water, swell and become opaque. Fifteen patients with 20 episodes of persistent corneal ulceration, resistant to conventional therapy, were treated with topical autologous fibronectin. Thirteen corneal ulcers (eight patients) developed following penetrating keratoplasty, three patients had mucous membrane pemphigoid, two patients had herpetic keratitis and one each had Sjögren's syndrome and a trophic corneal ulcer. A double-masked, coded trial was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the topical administration of 2% cromolyn sodium eye drops on vernal keratoconjunctivitis in 14 children. One eye of each patient was treated for one year with cromoly, the other eye with placebo. Cromolyn reduced the characteristic vernal keratitis, vernal corneal ulcers and plaques, and limbal edema and infiltrates but did not affect the number or size of the giant papillae. The drug's long-term topical use did not have any adverse side effects.
