Are there short cuts to pubertal assessments? Self-reported and assessed group differences in pubertal development in African adolescents.

PURPOSE: Self-rating of pubertal development using the Pubertal Development Scale (PDS) is recommended as a noninvasive assessment of puberty in large community-based surveys of adolescent development and behavior. The objective of this study was to assess the reliability of the PDS for the first time among urban, Black South African youth. METHODS: The concordance between adolescents' self-assessment of sexual maturation using the PDS and those of an expert rating by a trained health professional using the Sexual Maturation Scale (SMS) were determined in a group (n = 182; 49% female) of Blac…

Incentive-related modulation of cognitive control in healthy, anxious, and depressed adolescents: development and psychopathology related differences.

BACKGROUND: Developmental changes in cognitive and affective processes contribute to adolescent risk-taking behavior, emotional intensification, and psychopathology. The current study examined adolescent development of cognitive control processes and their modulation by incentive, in health and psychopathology. Predictions include 1) better cognitive control in adults than adolescents, and in healthy adolescents than anxious and depressed adolescents, and 2) a stronger influence of incentives in adolescents than adults, and in healthy adolescents than their depressed and anxious counterparts. …

Cross-sectional growth references and implications for the development of an international growth standard for school-aged children and adolescents.

Normative data are needed to create a reference that indicates optimal development of weight in relation to height and age, particularly in the face of the unfolding obesity epidemic. The body-mass index (BMI) has some serious limitations: it is a relatively poor predictor of current and future fatness. Currently, however, there are few available alternatives, with the possible exception of waist circumference or skinfolds. The use of cross-sectional references to construct a BMI-reference curve is problematic when there are period and cohort effects. Ideally, a reference would be based on lon

Development of a disease-specific quality of life questionnaire for children & adolescents with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP-QoL).

Quality of life (QoL) assessment in children with coagulation disorders is a relatively unstudied area. While hemophilia-specific questionnaires (such as Haemo-QoL) are available, no instrument for children with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) has been validated yet. A disease-specific questionnaire for children with ITP was therefore developed (ITP-QoL) in three phases: (a) a preparatory phase; (b) a developmental phase; (c) a pilot testing phase. Since dimensions of Haemo-QoL were considered important for children with ITP, items were adapted, reformulated and additional dimensions

Some trends in the somatic development of children and adolescents under iodine-deficiency: materials from the Saratov region.

2,106 girls and 2,169 boys from 7 to 17 were investigated in 2002-2004 in three urban settlements of the Saratov region (Povolzhje area): the town of Khvalynsk, population 15,000, with a low level of industrialization; the city of Balakovo, population 220,000, highly industrialized and with a nuclear power station; and the city of Saratov, population around 1,000,000 a regional capital, and also highly industrialized. The whole area, particularly the location of Khvalynsk, is also characterized by iodine deficiency (iodine concentration is 0.78 mkg/kg v. normal values of 5-7 mkg/kg). The progr

Right amygdala volume in adolescent and young adult offspring from families at high risk for developing alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Neurobiological factors have been implicated in the increased susceptibility for developing alcohol dependence that offspring from alcoholic families exhibit. The P300 component of the event-related potential shows developmental changes during childhood and adolescence that appear to be related to risk status. The underlying structural changes that accompany these neurophysiological changes are not well understood. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure cerebral, amygdala, and hippocampal volumes in 17 high-risk adolescent and young adult offspring from multiplex

Development of a quality of care measurement system for children and adolescents. Methodological considerations and comparisons with a system for adult women.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the development of a pediatric quality of care measurement system designed to cover multiple clinical topics that could be applied to enrollees in managed care organizations and to compare the development of this system with the concurrent development of a similar system for adult women. DESIGN: Indicators were developed for 21 pediatric (ages 0-18 years) clinical topics and 20 adult (ages 17-50 years) women's clinical topics. Indicators were classified by the strength of evidence supporting them. A modified Delphi method was used to obtain validity and feasibility rat

"DiscoverU": Formative Development and Mixed-Methods Evaluation of an Afterschool Health and Well-Being Mentoring Program for Adolescents.

This manuscript describes the (1) development of the "DiscoverU" afterschool mentoring program and (2) formative evaluation of its feasibility, acceptability, and initial impact on adolescents' physical activity (PA), interpersonal skills, and social connectedness. We used a convergent mixed-methods design with quantitative data from adolescents (n = 32) and qualitative data from adolescents (n = 14), mentors (n = 14), facilitators (n = 3), and school staff (n = 3). We assessed pre-post changes physical activity, mindful eating, and social-emotional skills with paired Wilcoxon tests and used c

Effects of genetic risk for depression and household socioeconomic status on emotional behavior and brain development in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization ranks depression as the leading non-fatal contributor to the global burden of disease. Research shows that early intervention before clinical onset leads to better outcomes. To study depression at this pre-onset stage, risk can be evaluated through depressive prodromal behaviors and associated brain biomarkers. Both environmental and genetic factors independently contribute to depression vulnerability, yet little work has examined how they interact. We therefore examined whether the socioeconomic status (SES) predictor of family income-to-needs ratio (

Development of a Novel Psychosocial Intervention to Improve Symptom Management for Adolescents and Young Adults with Advanced or Recurrent Cancer.

PURPOSE: High symptom burden and poor prognosis faced by adolescents and young adults (AYAs; aged 15-29) with advanced or recurrent cancer significantly impact their sense of identity and purpose as they work to achieve developmentally significant goals. The combination of high symptom burden and goal interference may exacerbate suffering, yet palliative care interventions have not addressed the co-occurring symptom management and existential concerns of this population. METHODS: Guided by the NIH Stage Model, we systematically developed a psychosocial symptom management intervention to addre

Developing global measurement guidance to strengthen adolescent well-being data generation and use at country level.

Adolescence is a critical life stage marked by rapid physical, cognitive, and social development with implications for well-being in adulthood and of subsequent generations. Although global attention to adolescent well-being has grown over the past decade, efforts to measure it remain fragmented, sector specific, and include a greater number of indicators of risks and negative outcomes compared to positive well-being. To address these challenges, the World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and other United Nations (UN) partners, d

Development of Educational Guidance Sessions for Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer and Their Caregivers: A Component of the AYA-NAV Intervention.

ObjectivesAdolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer often experience educational and vocational challenges that hinder long-term developmental goals and milestones. While more attention has been paid to addressing employment-related needs, little research has focused on identifying and addressing educational needs during or after treatment for AYAs with cancer, particularly younger AYAs, who rely on caregivers for educational support and guidance. We report our process for developing and refining an educational guidance session for caregivers of AYAs with cancer.MethodsGuided by an exten

Developing Growth Reference Curves for Jordanian Children and Adolescents: A Comparative Analysis with WHO Growth Standards and References.

Background: Growth standards and growth references serve different purposes. The WHO Child Growth Standards for ages 0-5 years describe growth under specified optimal conditions, whereas the WHO 5-19-year curves are a reference reconstructed from historical NCHS data. This study aimed to develop sex-specific growth reference curves for Jordanian children and adolescents and compare selected centiles descriptively with WHO growth standards and references. Methods: Retrospective anthropometric records collected between 2019 and 2025 through the Ministry of Health's Hakeem National E-Health Progr

Peer Group Effect on the Development of Adolescents' Problem Behaviors and Depression: Moderating Effects of Group Membership Stability.

PURPOSE: This study investigated peer group socialization of problem behaviors and depression during early adolescence. The research specifically examined how the stability of group membership moderates the relationship between group-level behaviors and individual outcomes. METHODS: A six-month longitudinal design was employed, involving 2526 Grade 7 students. The social cognitive map and multilevel modeling were used to identify peer group structures and analyze behavioral trajectories over time. RESULTS: Peer groups demonstrated high stability, as 80% of groups maintained at least 50% of t

Two systems, two timelines: Computational evidence for dissociable development in inhibitory control across childhood and adolescence.

This study examined inhibitory control development across two samples of Chinese children: a cross-sectional (n = 1,122; 45.5% female; 91.9% Han; Mage=12.42 years, range: 6.0-18.7 years) with 6-month longitudinal follow-up and independent validation sample (n = 1,026; 45.1% female; 90.8% Han; Mage=12.44 years, range: 6.1-18.8 years). Generalized additive models applied to Stroop and Go/No-Go tasks revealed four-phase nonlinear developmental trajectories. Response inhibition stabilized by 13.4 years, while interference inhibition developed until 15.8 years. Hierarchical drift diffusion modeling

Overground, conventional treadmill, and aquatic treadmill walking joint kinematics differ in typically developing children and adolescents.

Gait training is a common rehabilitation tool using repeated gait cycles to promote motor learning and improve overall walking ability (Booth et al., 2018; Kim & Lee, 2016;Novy et al., 2013). The purpose of this study was to quantify differences in peak and time-to-peak ankle plantarflexion, knee flexion, and hip flexion in typically developing children (7 males, 8 females, age 11.3 ± 4.1 years, 1.46 ± 0.18 m, and 44.2 ± 16.8 kg) during overground, conventional treadmill, and aquatic treadmill walking at three walking speeds (slow, normal, and fast). We hypothesized that increasing walking spe

Timing and tempo of pubertal development and substance use in adolescence: a cohort study in the Danish National Birth Cohort.

STUDY QUESTION: Are the age at reaching different pubertal milestones, and the tempo of pubertal progression, associated with cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, or recreational drug use in adolescence? SUMMARY ANSWER: Earlier age at pubertal development was associated with a higher risk of smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol (only boys), and using recreational drugs in adolescence, and a faster tempo tended to be associated with higher risks, mainly in girls, while any associations in boys appeared less clear. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Girls and boys with an earlier age at pubertal development
