Prediction of Adrenal Adenomas With Hypercortisolism by Using Adrenal Computed Tomography: Emphasis on Contralateral Adrenal Thinning.

PURPOSE: To analyze computed tomography (CT) characteristics of adrenal adenomas with hypercortisolism on adrenal CT compared to adenomas with hyperaldosteronism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two adrenal adenomas, consisting of group A (hypercortisolism, n = 16) and group B (hyperaldosteronism, n = 16), were evaluated with adrenal CT. Thirty-four patients without adrenal nodule on CT and hormonal abnormality (group C) were selected for comparison. In adenomas, lesion size, attenuation value, and absolute and relative washout were compared between groups A and B. The mean adrenal thickness wa

Effect of bursal anti-steroidogenic peptide (BASP) on cortisol biosynthesis in ACTH-stimulated canine adrenocortical carcinoma cells in vitro.

Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that bursal anti-steroidogenic peptide (BASP) inhibits progesterone biosynthesis from ovine luteinizing hormone-stimulated chicken ovarian granulosa cells. In the present investigation, we evaluated the efficacy of BASP for reducing cortisol secretion from normal canine adrenocortical cells and neoplastic adrenocortical cells from a dog with Cushing's syndrome. Treatment of adrenocortical cells derived from either normal healthy dogs or a cushingoid dog with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH; 0-10 nM) caused an approximately two-fold incre

Evaluation and management of Carney's complex: an illustrative case.

Carney's complex is characterized by cardiac and cutaneous myxomas, mammary myxoid fibroadenomas, spotty mucocutaneous pigmentation, primary pigmented adrenocortical disease, large-cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumors of the testis, growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas, and psammomatous melanotic schwannomas. We present an illustrative case of Carney's complex in a 26-year-old woman who at age 20 underwent bilateral adrenalectomy for Cushing's syndrome. Six years later, she suffered multiple central nervous system embolic episodes secondary to three cardiac myxomas, which led to her deat

The Prevalence of Second Neoplasms in Patients with Non-Aldosterone Producing Adrenocortical Lesions.

Over the last few decades, due to improvement in imaging techniques, the increased detection of adrenal incidentalomas is observed. Non-aldosterone producing adrenal adenomas (NAPACAs) often co-exist with second benign or malignant lesions. In the present study, we aimed to assess the presence of second neoplasms, both benign and malignant, in patients with NAPACAs, and to investigate possible correlations with clinical parameters, hormonal characteristics and the emergence of comorbidities. A total of 130 NAPACA patients were included in this single-center retrospective study. In this cohort,

The European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumors Staging System (2015): A United States Validation.

OBJECTIVE: To test the ability of the 2015 modified version of the European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumors staging system (mENSAT) in predicting cancer-specific mortality (CSM), as well as overall mortality (OM) in adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) patients of all stages, in a large-scale, and contemporary United States cohort. METHODS: We relied on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2004-2020) to test the accuracy and calibration of the mENSAT and subsequently compared it to the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system (AJCC).

[Synchronously occurring transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter with adrenocortical carcinoma].

A sixty eight-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of macroscopic hematuria. Ultrasonography, X-ray and laboratory examination revealed a right ureter tumor and left non-functioning adrenal tumor. Pathological diagnosis was transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter and left adrenocortical carcinoma. A review of persistent Japanese literature revealed this case to be the 97th case of non-functioning adrenocortical carcinoma and the first case synchronously occurring with transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter. Forty eight cases of synchronously occurring transitional cell ca

Use of plasma chromogranin a epitopes vasostatin and catestatin as biomarkers for catecholamine-producing tumours in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Differentiation of catecholamine-producing tumours from other adrenal tumours remains difficult. Chromogranin A (CgA) is a marker for catecholamine secretion in the body. An assay for quantification of the CgA epitopes vasostatin and catestatin has been validated for use in dogs but not yet evaluated in dogs with catecholamine-producing tumours. The aims were to evaluate the assays foranalysis of plasma concentrations of the CgA epitopes vasostatin and catestatin in dogs with adrenal tumours and to compare concentrations between catecholamine-producing tumours and adrenocortical tu

[Opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome secondary to abdominal neuroblastoma. Presentation of a pediatric clinical case].

Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome is a rare disorder among pediatric patients. The diagnosis is clinical and is characterized by the presence of at least three of the following: opsoclonus, myoclonus, ataxia, irritability and sleep disorders. In over 50 % of cases it is associated with the presence of Neuroblastoma. It is a disorder of immune origin and its treatment is based on immunosuppressants, immunomodulators and tumor resection in cases secondary to Neuroblastoma. Up to 70 % to 80 % of cases may present neurological sequelae, depending on the cause, the initial severity of symptoms and the

Three cases of adrenocortical tumors mistaken for hepatocellular carcinomas/diagnostic pitfalls and differential diagnosis.

Adrenocortical adenomas and carcinomas in other parenchyma are extremely rare, with few cases reported and because of the rarity of these tumors, they occasionally cause problems during diagnosis. Adrenal cortical neoplasms in liver parenchyma can be present in 3 forms, including direct invasion or adhesion to liver parenchyma, tumors arising in adrenohepatic fusion tissue or in ectopic adrenal gland tissue. We report 3 cases of adrenal cortical tumors that were misdiagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma in the preoperative state. The first case involved an adrenocortical adenoma arising in adre

[Therapy-resistant hypertension--the endocrinological view].

A significant percentage of patients with therapy-resistant high blood pressure have hormonal hypertension. This includes primary hyperaldosteronism due to an aldosterone-producing adenoma, or a bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, hypercortisolism caused by a tumor of the adrenals, or an ACTH-dependent form of Cushing's syndrome, as also excessive catecholamines caused by a pheochromocytoma or a paraganglioma. The diagnostic work-up includes screening tests for the basal hormone status in the serum and urine, together with confirmatory additional hormonal and imaging procedures in suspected cases,

Multivariable model versus AJCC staging system: cancer-specific survival predictions in adrenocortical carcinoma.

We developed a novel contemporary population-based model for predicting cancer-specific survival (CSS) in adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) patients and compared it with the established 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system (AJCC). Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2004-2020), we identified 1056 ACC patients. Univariable Cox regression model addressed CSS. Harrell's concordance index (C-index) quantified accuracy after 2000 bootstrap resamples for internal validation. The multivariable Cox regression model included the most informative

Japanese single-institution analysis of mitotane for patients with adrenocortical carcinoma.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis. While mitotane is the only agent approved for ACC, clinical data are scarce, especially in the Asian population. We reviewed 10 patients with ACC who received mitotane as a single agent or in combination with other agents in our institution. Patient characteristics, clinical outcomes, and toxicities were analyzed. Mitotane was administered to 2 patients as an adjuvant therapy and to 8 patients for systemic control. In the latter 8 patients, 1 patient had locally advanced disease and 1 had metastatic disease at the time
