A survey of the ways master's level nursing students learn the research process.

Because of the need for advanced practice nurses to perform more outcome measurement, a survey was conducted in the fall of 1997 to determine how master's level students learned the research process. Three hundred four surveys were mailed to schools with master's programs, and 222 were returned for a return rate of 73%. Sixty-six percent of the programs surveyed required a thesis and/or a research project. However, there was great variation in the research projects. A comprehensive examination was used to measure research ability by 36 programs (16%), either in conjunction with a thesis or res

Decreasing Asthma-Related Health and Educational Inequity Through School-Based Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood and is a driver of significant health and educational inequity. Despite research demonstrating that school-based asthma interventions can improve health and educational outcomes and advance equity, calls to shift the field to a dissemination and implementation focus have gone largely unanswered. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: Building upon the foundation of Charles Basch's 2011 "Healthier Students are Better Learners" framework, we summarize relevant findings from the recent literature on school-based asthma interventions. The Perinatal Birth Environment: Communication Strategies and Processes for Adherence to a Standardized Guideline in Women Undergoing Second-Stage Labor With Epidural Anesthesia.

Key to any perinatal safety initiative is buy-in and strong leadership from obstetric and pediatric providers, advanced practice nurses, and labor and delivery nurses in collaboration with ancillary staff. In the fall of 2007, executives of a large Midwestern hospital system created the Zero Birth Injury Initiative. This multidisciplinary group sought to eliminate birth injury using the Institute of Healthcare Improvement Perinatal Bundles. Concurrently, the team implemented a standardized second-stage labor guideline for women who choose epidural analgesia for pain management to continue the

Myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic neuromuscular disorder characterized by fluctuating skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue. This rare autoimmune condition can present a diagnostic challenge for the advanced practice nurse (APN). Because of its low incidence in clinical practice and frequently unrecognized symptoms, a delay of 1 to 2 years prior to diagnosis is not uncommon. Recognition of the clinical features is a key component of prompt diagnosis. To avoid delay in treatment, APNs should be aware of variations in MG symptoms and the tools used to confirm a suspected diagnosis. Because pati

"So we started talking about a beach in Barbados": visualization practices and needle phobia.

Needle phobia is a relatively common condition that, because it involves fear of a clinical procedure, often deals a 'double blow' to sufferers. Not only can it affect their general health care seeking behaviors (with avoidance potentially having serious health implications), if and when they present for health care, it often causes them significant physical and mental distress. This paper reports on a specific type of therapeutic practice that health professionals use when injecting their clients who have (undiagnosed) needle phobia, aimed at preventing, or momentarily relieving, their negati

Perioperative Considerations in Patients With Concussion.

Concussions affect the normal functioning of the autonomic nervous system and glucose metabolism, impair cerebral autoregulation to Paco₂, and produce abnormal variances in myogenic and vagal tone. Because anesthesia also has an impact on these same processes, it is vital to delineate the best practice in the perianesthesia period to minimize additional damage to the concussed brain. There are currently no practice guidelines surrounding perianesthesia management of patients with concussion to guide practice. To answer 4 clinically pertinent questions for nurse anesthesia practice, the authors

Effect of external infusion connection devices replacement frequency on catheter related bloodstream infection.

Timely and effective rescue of critically ill children no longer solely relies on advanced medical technology; vascular access plays a pivotal role. Best practice recommendations for nursing in vascular access are critical for ICU patients. However, clear guidelines for the maintenance of external infusion connection devices remain lacking. To address this gap, we conducted a prospective observational cohort study to examine the relationship between the number or replacement frequency of external infusion connection devices and catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI). From September 202

The what, why and how of hyperkinesis: implications for nursing.

Hyperkinesis refers to a combination of traits that typically include: overactivity; restlessness; short attention span; distractability; low frustration tolerance; impulsiveness. Its aetiology and prevalence have not been established but associating problems underscore the importance of early identification and treatment. Theories about aetiology relate to minimal brain damage, heredity, temperament variations, maturational lag, dysfunction of the reticular activating system, food sensitivity, and learned response to unorganized environment. Hyperkinesis may be distinguished only by its behav

The role of digital literacy and ethical awareness in nurses' acceptance of Artificial Intelligence: a cross-sectional questionnaire survey.

BACKGROUND: The integration of artificial intelligence into healthcare is rapidly transforming clinical practice. Nurses' acceptance of artificial intelligence is influenced by their digital literacy and ethical awareness, yet empirical evidence examining these interrelationships is limited. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the direct and indirect effects of digital literacy on nurses' acceptance of artificial intelligence, with ethical awareness of artificial intelligence serving as a mediating factor. METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlational design was conducted among 350 nurses working in

Current landscape and research gaps in artificial intelligence for ophthalmic nursing: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing rapidly across clinical medicine, yet its application within ophthalmic nursing, spanning emergency triage, perioperative care, day surgery, and patient education, remains poorly characterized. The growing burden of eye disease and the demand for community-based ophthalmic screening create an urgent context for understanding where AI can augment nursing capacity in this field and what barriers may be limiting evidence generation. This review aimed to systematically map published evidence on AI applications in ophthalmic nursing practice a

Top Ten Tips Palliative Care Clinicians Should Know About Intentionally Interprofessional Collaboration.

Although high-quality and holistic specialty palliative care is delivered by an interprofessional team, little guidance is available to optimize approaches to and sustainment of such teamwork. This article supports individuals to practice at the top of their education, clinical training, and scope of practice while maximizing the functionality of the palliative care team as a whole. We intentionally use the term interprofessional rather than interdisciplinary to clarify that we are focused on collaboration of team members who represent multiple professions or occupations that require specializ

Assessment of children with pervasive developmental disorders.

TOPIC: Pervasive developmental disorders, a group of conditions marked by impaired social reciprocity, communication deficits, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. PURPOSE: Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are in a unique position to assess these children, make appropriate diagnoses, and refer parents for further consultation and intervention. SOURCES: Current literature, formal training on diagnostic instruments, and clinical experience. CONCLUSIONS: Diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorders requires knowledge of normal growth and development and other childhood psychiatric disorders.

The effectiveness of non-physicians as providers of family planning services.

Population growth and advances in contraceptive technology are discussed in relation to changes in birth control attitudes and practices and the expansion of public family planning programs. The literature describing training, utilization, and effectiveness of non-physicians in providing family planning services is reviewed. Studies comparing physician and non-physician provision of oral contraceptives and IUD insertions are discussed. On the basis of extensive supporting data, the author concludes that many functions which formerly were in the physician's province are as safely and perhaps mo

An Eye on Vision: Five Questions About Vision Screening and Eye Health-Part 3.

Current evidence-based and best practice vision screening and eye health approaches, tools, and procedures are the result of revised national guidelines in the past 3 years and advances in research during the past 18 years. To help the busy school nurse with little time to keep up with changes in children's vision practices and a growing body of literature, the National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness is providing answers to five questions that are often received from the field. Topical areas are: (1) instrument-based screening for children ages 6 years and old

Job Satisfaction, Leadership Behaviors, and Turnover Intention Among Nurses in Saudi Arabia: A Mediation Analysis.

AIM: To examine the associations among nurses' perceived leadership behavior, job satisfaction, and turnover intention in Saudi Arabia and to determine whether perceived leadership behavior mediates the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention. BACKGROUND: Nurses' turnover intention remains a major challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. High turnover contributes to nursing shortages, negatively affects patient outcomes, and increases healthcare costs. Although job satisfaction is a well-established predictor of turnover intention, limited research has explored the pot

Advance care planning in the end-of-life phase: coordinating between social worlds.

Advance care planning (ACP) for people in the last phase of life, living at home with complex care needs, is increasingly seen as a valuable practice to deliver patient-centred care and to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and delay nursing home admissions. A notable difficulty of ACP is the coordination of ACP-practices over various domains involved in patient care (e.g. home care, GP care, hospital care). We draw on ethnographic data on ACP practices in home care, GP-care and hospital care in the Netherlands. We use social worlds theory to analyse the different information requirements of
