Drinking motives for self and others predict alcohol use and consequences among college women: the moderating effects of PTSD.

Although drinking motives have been shown to influence drinking behavior among women with trauma histories and PTSD, no known research has examined the influence of drinking motives on alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences for women with PTSD as compared to women with a trauma history but no PTSD and women with no trauma history. Therefore, the present study sought to examine the associations between drinking motives women held for themselves as well as their perception of the drinking motives of others and their own alcohol use and consequences, and whether this was moderated by a hist

NIAAA's rapid response to college drinking problems initiative: reinforcing the use of evidence-based approaches in college alcohol prevention.

OBJECTIVE: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) created the Rapid Response to College Drinking Problems initiative so that senior college administrators facing an alcohol-related crisis could get assistance from well-established alcohol researchers and NIAAA staff. METHOD: Based on a competitive grant process, NIAAA selected five teams of research scientists with expertise in college drinking research. NIAAA then invited college administrators to propose interventions to address a recently experienced alcohol-related problem. Between September 2004 and September 2005

Elevated levels of hemoglobin-associated acetaldehyde related to alcohol drinking in the atypical genotype of low Km aldehyde dehydrogenase.

Acetaldehyde is suspected to be the ultimate carcinogen in alcohol-related carcinogenesis. The atypical genotypes of low Km aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) have higher blood concentrations of free acetaldehyde after drinking alcohol. We measured levels of acetaldehyde reversibly bound to hemoglobin (HbAA) after drinking 0.4 ml/kg ethanol using fluorigenic high performance liquid chromatography method in volunteers with the two major ALDH2 genotypes. In the ALDH2*1/*1 genotype with high ALDH2 activity, the increase of HbAA was small. By contrast, in the ALDH2*1/*2 genotype with low ALDH2 activit

Adolescent alcohol use: social determinants and the case for early family-centered prevention. Family-focused prevention of adolescent drinking.

The family plays a central role in the use of alcohol by children and adolescents, yet preventive interventions rarely focus on the family. Early drinking and much subsequent use of alcohol by children and adolescents is sanctioned and sometimes encouraged by their families. Unlike experimentation with alcohol, problem drinking is associated with low levels of family social support and with dysfunctional coping strategies of families that may lead children to use drinking as an adaptive behavior. While risk-factor research has advanced understanding of alcohol use by children and youth, the po

Inhibition of brain dopa-decarboxylase by RO 4-4602 infused ICV blocks alcohol drinking induced in rats by cyanamide.

Following the stereotaxic implantation of chronic cannulae for intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion, rats were given an alcohol preference … concentrations of 10 ng-2.0 micrograms per 5.0 microliters volume, benserazide attenuated the rats' alcohol drinking significantly. This reduction occurred in a dose-dependent manner in terms of both absolute and proportional intakes of alcohol. Pre-treatment of the animals with 1.0 microgram benserazide given ICV, when alcohol was removed from the test situation, …

'Hiding the Label': 'Passing' as Drinkers and Reinforcing Drinking Norms Through no and Low Alcohol Consumption in Social Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the expansion of the No and Low (NoLo) alcohol market (drinks from 0.0% to 1.2% ABV) in the United Kingdom and other contexts, knowledge of how/why these products are used remains limited. This paper addresses gaps in understanding, exploring how NoLos are used by consumers to feel included and/or 'pass' as drinkers in social settings. METHODS: This paper presents data from a small-scale UK study involving 15 in-depth interviews with NoLo consumers. RESULTS: The paper identifies three key themes. 'Inclusion, blending in and drinking rituals' explores how NoLos supported

Prediction of carbon dioxide solubility in sugar-water-alcohol solutions at high pressure for application to sparkling drinks.

In the beverage industry, the CO2 pressure and dissolved CO2 reached in their packaged beverage play an important role. In this regard, the work aims to develop a thermodynamic model for the prediction of the phase equilibrium behavior of quaternary CO2-sugar-water-alcohol solutions up to high pressures. The Perturbed Hard Sphere Chain (PHSC) equation of state (EoS) has been used to predict the solubility of CO2 in glucose-water-alcohol solutions. Glucose molecules have been modeled as a chain-like molecule with ten association sites. Cross-association between CO2, glucose, and water molecules

Within-day associations between affect and intentions to drink alcohol in adolescents and young adults: A registered report.

OBJECTIVE: Motivational theories hypothesizing that people drink to relieve negative affect have not been supported using data from people's daily lives. People may experience negative affect when alcohol is unavailable or when use would conflict with people's current goals, but people's thoughts about alcohol use, such as intentions to drink later in the day, are less contextually constrained. Alcohol intentions may serve as affect regulation and lead to decreases in negative or increases in positive affect prior to drinking itself. METHOD: This registered report provides an initial test of

Discourses of addiction in the construction of people whose drinking affected others in narratives about alcohol harms to others.

While research in alcohol harms to others (AHTO) has described the characteristics of people whose drinking affects others, few studies have investigated the construction of the affecting drinkers from the perspectives of those who have been affected. Drawing on data gathered through qualitative interviews with people who reported having been affected by others' drinking, a discourse analysis was conducted to examine how they constructed the drinkers who affected them in the stories about their experiences. The study focuses on stories about AHTO occurrences related to repeated, long-lasting h

Unveiling the power of optimism: Exploring behavioral and neuromolecular correlates of alcohol seeking and drinking in rats with biased judgement.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a common psychiatric condition with substantial global mortality. Despite extensive research into its pathophysiology, the cognitive predispositions driving alcohol dependence are less understood. This study explores whether biased cognition, specifically traits of optimism and pessimism, predicts susceptibility to alcohol-seeking behaviors using an animal model. Rats were initially tested for judgement bias through Ambiguous Cue Interpretation tests. Those identified as 'optimistic' or 'pessimistic' were further examined for their tendency to escalate alcohol int

Was receipt of any specialty alcohol treatment during the pandemic effective at reducing drinking for patients with or at risk of AUD?

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way healthcare providers delivered most health services, including treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Specialty alcohol treatment remained available through the pandemic, and within some systems treatment use increased likely due to telehealth availability. However, the field knows little about the relationship between the pandemic's expanded access to specialty alcohol treatment and alcohol use outcomes. METHODS: The sample included 14,712 patients from Kaiser Permanente Northern California who screened positive for unhealthy alcohol use

Externalizing and internalizing problems as predictors of alcohol-related harm and binge drinking in early adolescence: The role of gender.

BACKGROUND: Externalizing problems are commonly associated with alcohol outcomes in adolescence. Nevertheless, findings regarding internalizing problems are mixed, and fewer longitudinal studies have considered the both problems concomitantly and the role of gender. We examined the role of externalizing and internalizing problems in predicting adolescent alcohol-related harm and binge drinking, taking into account the gender differences. We also evaluated if externalizing problems could moderate the association between internalizing problems and alcohol outcomes. METHOD: We used longitudinal

Significance of Selected Environmental and Biological Factors on the Risk of FASD in Women Who Drink Alcohol during Pregnancy.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), which refers to alcohol consumption by pregnant women, is associated with the risk of numerous severe complications during fetal development. The State Agency for Alcohol Problem Solving reports that the incidence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in Poland's general population is over 1.7%, and the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is estimated at more than 0.5%. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of alcohol exposure and focused on the pattern of alcohol intoxication exhibited by the mother during pregnancy and other environmental fa

Alcohol Drinks Induce Acute Lowering in Circulating l-Arginine in Obese and Type 2 Diabetic Subjects.

Since low serum l-arginine (Arg) and high asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) can predict microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), we tested whether Arg and ADMA are affected by diet and physical activity in overweight/obese and T2DM subjects. We tested the effects on serum Arg and ADMA of single loads of dextrose, protein, fat, or alcohol (∼300 calories each); one episode of physical exercise; and 12 weeks of standard lifestyle modification (dietary and physical activity counseling). Alcohol drink was followed by ∼30% lowering in Arg. Arg and ADMA increased after a prote

Advancing Precision Medicine for Alcohol Use Disorder: Replication and Extension of Reward Drinking as a Predictor of Naltrexone Response.

BACKGROUND: Precision medicine aims to identify those patients who will benefit the most from specific treatments. Recent work found large effects of naltrexone among "reward drinkers," defined as individuals who drink primarily for the rewarding effects of alcohol. This study sought to replicate and extend these recent findings by examining whether the desire to drink mediated the effect of naltrexone among reward drinkers. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a 12-week randomized clinical trial of daily or targeted naltrexone among problem drinkers (n = 163), with a focus on 86 ind

Content Analysis of Advantages and Disadvantages of Drinking Among Individuals With the Lived Experience of Homelessness and Alcohol Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are more prevalent among people who are homeless than in the general population. Thus, homeless individuals experience disproportionately high levels of alcohol-related problems and associated publicly funded criminal justice and healthcare system utilization. Available treatment services, however, are not effective at engaging and treating this population. To better tailor treatment services to their needs, it is imperative we understand this population's perceptions of their alcohol use. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to provide description an

Living the cycle of drinking and violence: A qualitative study of women's experience of alcohol-related intimate partner violence.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Heavy and binge drinking contributes to increased risk and severity of violence in intimate relationships, but its role in the initiation and escalation of intimate partner violence (IPV) is not well-understood. This study explores the dynamics of drinking and IPV from the perspectives of women with lived experience of alcohol-related IPV. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative constructivist grounded theory study using interviews with 18 women aged 18-50 years who experienced fear or harm from an alcohol-affected male partner. Participants were recruited from the community

Computed tomography assessment of peripubertal craniofacial morphology in a sheep model of binge alcohol drinking in the first trimester.

Identification of facial dysmorphology is essential for the diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS); however, most children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) do not meet the dysmorphology criterion. Additional objective indicators are needed to help identify the broader spectrum of children affected by prenatal alcohol exposure. Computed tomography (CT) was used in a sheep model of prenatal binge alcohol exposure to test the hypothesis that quantitative measures of craniofacial bone volumes and linear distances could identify alcohol-exposed lambs. Pregnant sheep were randomly ass

Effects of alcohol and energy drink on mood and subjective intoxication: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study.

OBJECTIVE: There is concern that combining energy drinks with alcohol may 'mask' subjective intoxication leading to greater alcohol consumption. This study examines the effects of alcohol alone and combined with energy drink on objective and subjective intoxication and mood over the course of 3 h. METHOD: Using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, balanced, crossover design, 24 participants (mean age 22.23 years) were administered with double placebo, 0.6 g/kg alcohol (mean peak blood alcohol content of 0.051%), 250 ml energy drink and alcohol/energy drink, according to a Latin square design,
