Alcohol-induced changes in body sway in women at risk for alcoholism: a pilot study.

Family history of alcoholism appears to influence acute alcohol responses in young men. We report pilot data from a study designed to expand these observations by measuring blood alcohol levels (BALs), subjective intoxication effects, body sway and cognitive-motor task performance in women. Six young women with (FHP) and six without (FHN) alcoholic first degree relatives provided informed consent and were given 0.56 g/kg ethanol under double-blind conditions. Groups were matched for age, drinking history and height-weight ratio. Subjects performed tasks in random order at 90, 60 and 30 min bef…

Marchiafava-Bignami disease, striatal degeneration, and other neurological complications of chronic alcoholism in a Japanese.

A Japanese man with a variety of neurological complications, had drunk Japanese rice wine (sake) daily for about 25 years. There was a progr … , and it is also a rare case in that almost all of the neurological complications seen with chronic alcoholism were apparent. Striatal degeneration seems to be a rare complication of chronic alcoholism.

Chronic alcoholism: report of an autopsy case and comparison with pseudoulegyric type of hepatocerebral degeneration.

An autopsy case diagnosed as chronic alcoholism was reported. He clinically showed progressive neurological illness. His CNS lesions were composed of disseminated necrotic foci in the cerebral cortices with many Alzheimer type II astrocytes, pachymeningitis hemorrhagica interna, and lesions similar to pellagra and Wernicke encephalopathy. Some clinical and pathological analogous features between chronic alcoholism and pseudoulegyric type of hepatocerebral degeneration were discussed.

Differences and similarities in development of drinking behavior between alcoholic offspring of alcoholics and alcoholic offspring of non-alcoholics.

Self-reported initial, early, and long-term drinking behaviors, experiences, and consequences were obtained from male alcoholics completing inpatient treatment. Subjects were recruited and selected on the basis that they met DSM-III criteria for diagnosis of alcohol dependency and that their biological fathers were alcoholic (FHP; Family History Positive) or that they had no biological family history of alcoholism (FHN; Family History Negative). Results indicated that FHP subjects rated their initial taste of beer higher than FHN subjects, that FHP subjects began tasting and subsequently regul…

[Alcohol and pregnancy--embryopathy and alcohol effects].

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a specific polydystrophic pattern of malformations with the following diagnostic criteria: 1. Maternal alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse during pregnancy. 2. Pre- and postnatal deficiency of growth in weight, height and head circumference. 3. Multiple minor and major anomalies recognizable mainly at a typical face. 4. Structural injuries and changes at the central nervous system with complex brain dysfunction combining elements of cognitive impairments, behavioral disturbance and neurological damage. Fetal alcohol effects (FAE) or so-called "alcohol-related ne

[Alcoholic heart disease (alcoholic cardiomyopathy)].

With no intention of belittling the importance of chronic ischemic heart disease (CIHD) in modern cardiology, the article focuses the attention on primary alcoholic heart disease--alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACMP)--which arouses a far from causal interest due to the prevalence of alcoholism. It is suggested to distinguish three main clinical forms of ACMP: valence of alcoholism. It is suggested to distinguish three main clinical forms of ACMP: (1) "classical", manifested by dilatation of the heart and signs of its failure; (2) "quasi-ischemic" manifested by cardialgia and changes in the ECG, res…

Alcohol and alcohol-related deficiencies as carcinogens.

From the available evidence, alsohol ingestion per se does not appear to be carcinogenic. While alcoholism constitutes a major and serious social problem, it is not clear to what extent it constitutes a major health problem. We suggest that excessive alcohol ingestion coupled with a nutritional deficiency or some other insult (e.g., smoking) may be carcinogenic. Alcohol and/or several nutritional deficiencies usually associated with alcoholism have been shown to be immunosuppressive. The relationship between immunoincompetency and neoplasia has long been appreciated, and the exact role that al…

Augmenting Common Spatial Patterns to deep learning networks for improved alcoholism detection using EEG signals.

One of the main risk factors for numerous health problems is excessive drinking. Alcoholism is a severe disorder that can affect a person's thinking and cognitive abilities. Early detection of alcoholism can help the subject regain control over their drinking habits and help them recover faster. The diagnosis of alcoholism is challenging, primarily when standard diagnostic tests rely on blood tests and questionnaires that are subjective to the patient and the examiner. This poses the need for fast, reliable, automatic, and preferably non-invasive ways to detect alcoholism. A non-invasive metho…

Psychedelic Targeting of Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 2 and Its Implications for the Treatment of Alcoholism.

Alcohol abuse is a leading risk factor for the public health burden worldwide. Approved pharmacotherapies have demonstrated limited effectiveness over the last few decades in treating alcohol use disorders (AUD). New therapeutic approaches are therefore urgently needed. Historical and recent clinical trials using psychedelics in conjunction with psychotherapy demonstrated encouraging results in reducing heavy drinking in AUD patients, with psilocybin being the most promising candidate. While psychedelics are known to induce changes in gene expression and neuroplasticity, we still lack crucial

Putative role of vitamin D in the mechanism of alcoholism and other addictions - a hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin D deficiency may be a clinical problem in patients with addictions. The authors systematically searched for studies addressing vitamin D and addiction and develop a hypothesis which can direct future research of the possible mechanistic role of vitamin D in the process of addiction. METHODS: Systematic review of the literature found in PubMed and EMBASE followed by narrative review combined with clinical experiences leading to hypotheses for future research. RESULTS: Only five articles were identified about a role of vitamin D in the pathophysiology of addiction. Their res

AAV Gene Therapy for Alcoholism: Inhibition of Mitochondrial Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Enzyme Expression in Hepatoma Cells.

Most ethanol is broken down in the liver in two steps by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) enzymes, which metabolize down ethanol into acetaldehyde and then acetate. Some individuals from the Asian population who carry a mutation in the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene (ALDH2*2) cannot metabolize acetaldehyde as efficiently, producing strong effects, including facial flushing, dizziness, hypotension, and palpitations. This results in an aversion to alcohol intake and protection against alcoholism. The large prevalence of this mutation in the human population strongly su…

Zinc-deficiency acrodermatitis in a patient with chronic alcoholism and gastric bypass: a case report.

Acquired adult-onset zinc deficiency is occasionally reported in patients with malnutrition states, such as alcoholism, or malabsorptive states, such as post-bariatric surgery. The defining symptoms of hypozincemia include a classic triad of necrolytic dermatitis, diffuse alopecia, and diarrhea. We report a case of zinc deficiency in a 39-year-old man with history of gastric bypass surgery and alcoholism. For this patient, severe hypozincemia confirmed acrodermatitis, and zinc supplementation was met with gradual improvement.

Brain metabolite changes in alcoholism: localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of the occipital lobe.

Chronic alcoholism is associated with altered brain metabolism, morphology and cognitive abilities. Besides deficits in higher order cognitive functions, alcoholics also show a deficit in the processing of basic sensory information viz. visual stimulation. To assess the metabolic changes associated with this deficit, (1)H MRS was carried out in the occipital lobe of alcohol dependents. A significant increase in Cho/Cr ratio (p<0.015) was observed in occipital lobe in the alcoholic group indicating altered cell membrane metabolism, which may probably be associated with the alterations in the co…
