HPLC with polysaccharide chiral stationary phase in polar-organic phase mode: application to the asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohols.

A simple and rapid HPLC method using a polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phase (Chiralpak AD-H) in polar-organic phase mode has been de … iomeric excess (> or = 90%) and yield obtained in real samples of asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohols without further purification, workup or solvent removal. The method provides a useful and value-added tool for controlling the enantiomeric purity of the synthesized epoxides.

Effect of long-chain alcohols on SDS partitioning to the oil/water interface of emulsions and on droplet size.

The effect of long-chain alcohols (C(n)OH for n=8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) on the partitioning of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to the oil/water interface in oil-in-water macroemulsions was investigated and related to emulsion droplet size and total interfacial area (TIA) contributed by SDS. Alcohols were solubilized in hexadecane and emulsified in SDS solutions. Ultrafiltration was carried out in centrifuge tubes having nanoporous filters with a 30,000 molecular weight cutoff (MWCO), so that emulsion droplets would not pass through, and only SDS that is in the bulk water phase as monomers or micel…

Can alcohol-based hand-rub solutions cause you to lose your driver's license? Comparative cutaneous absorption of various alcohols.

We assessed cutaneous ethanol (ETOH) and isopropanol (ISOP) absorption after intensive (30 times per h) use of alcohol-based hand-rub solutions by healthcare workers (HCWs). ETOH was detectable in the breath of 6/20 HCWs (0.001 to 0.0025%) at 1 to 2 min postexposure and in the serum of 2/20 HCWs at 5 to 7 min postexposure. Serum ISOP levels were unrecordable at all time points.

Temperature dependence of hydrogen bonding: an investigation of the retention of primary and secondary alcohols in gas-liquid chromatography.

Configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulations in the Gibbs Ensemble were carried out to investigate the analyte partitioning of n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol into a dioctyl ether retentive (stationary) phase used in gas-liquid chromatography. The united-atom version of the TraPPE (transferable potentials for phase equilibria) force field was used to model all analytes and the solvent. The analyte partition coefficients, Gibbs free energies of transfer, and Kovats retention indexes were calculated at four different temperatures ranging from 303.15 to 348.15 K. Althou

Emission of alcohols and carbonyl compounds from a spark ignition engine. Influence of fuel and air/fuel equivalence ratio.

A spark ignition engine was used to study the impact of fuel composition and of the air/fuel equivalence (lambda) ratio on exhaust emissions of alcohols and aldehydes/ketones. Fuel blends contained eight hydrocarbons (n-hexane, 1-hexene, cyclohexane, n-octane, isooctane, toluene, o-xylene, and ethylbenzene (ETB)) and four oxygenated compounds (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, and methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE)). Exhaust methanol is principally produced from fuel methanol and MTBE but also from ethanol, 2-propanol, isooctane, and hexane. Exhaust ethanol and 2-propanol are produced only from the r…

Wet effluent diffusion denuder technique and determination of volatile organic compounds in air. I. Oxo compounds (alcohols and ketones).

The wet effluent diffusion denuder (WEDD) preconcentration technique for the determination of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone and methyl n-propyl ketone in air is discussed. The compounds are continuously collected into a thin film of deionized water flowing down the inner wall of the cylindrical wet effluent diffusion denuder. The concentrate is analysed by gas chromatography. Detection limits of alcohols and ketones are as low as 1 microg/l (GC-flame ionization detection) and/or 1 ng/l (GC-MS). This technique coul…

Selection of C3 alcohols by high and low ethanol selecting mouse strains and the effects on open field activity.

Mice of the high-ethanol selecting C57BL/6j strain consume significantly larger amounts of 10% solution of 1,2-propanediol and 1-propanol than the low-ethanol selecting DBA/2j strain. Both strains uniformly avoid a 10% solution of 1,3-propanediol and 2-propanol. Open field activity was tested 30 min after an IP injection of 3 different equimolar doses of each alcohol. An increase in activity was produced in the DBA/2j strain by high (0.003 ml/mg) and middle (0.0015 ml/lg) doses of 1,2-propanediol and by a low dose (0.0005 ml/mg) of 2-propanol. The C57BL/6j strain were unaffected by these doses

Alcohol and seizures.

Alcohol-related seizures are a frequent neurological emergency, yet their management is often inconsistent. This article provides a practical, clinically orientated framework for evaluating and treating these seizures across different clinical settings. It reviews the neurobiological mechanisms linking alcohol use, withdrawal and seizure susceptibility; outlines a structured diagnostic work-up that avoids premature diagnostic anchoring and summarises evidence-based approaches to acute stabilisation, withdrawal management and antiseizure therapy. We emphasise the importance of supervised detoxi

Alcohol Withdrawal.

AUDIENCE: Emergency medicine residents and medical students on emergency medicine rotations. INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common in the United States, with an estimated lifetime prevalence of 30%.1 The rate of use is higher among white males, Native Americans, and individuals of low socioeconomic status.1 Alcohol withdrawal symptoms manifest in 50% of individuals who misuse alcohol.1 While life-threatening sequelae of alcohol withdrawal are rare, the syndrome is a common reason for emergency department (ED) presentations. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms range from benign, cravings,

The alcohol exposome.

Science is now in a new era of exposome research that strives to build a more all-inclusive, panoramic view in the quest for answers; this is especially true in the field of toxicology. Alcohol exposure researchers have been examining the multivariate co-exposures that may either exacerbate or initiate alcohol-related tissue/organ injuries. This manuscript presents selected key variables that represent the Alcohol Exposome. The primary variables that make up the Alcohol Exposome can include comorbidities such as cigarettes, poor diet, occupational hazards, environmental hazards, infectious age

Alcoholism and Osteoimmunology.

BACKGROUND: Chronic consumption of alcohol has an adverse effect on the skeletal system, which may lead to osteoporosis, delayed fracture healing and osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Currently, the treatment is limited, therefore, there is an urgent need to determine the underline mechanism and develop a new treatment. It is well-known that normal bone remodeling relies on the balance between osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and - mediated bone formation. Various factors can destroy the balance, including the dysfunction of the immune system. In this review, we summarized the relevant res

Alcohol Abuse.

Chronic alcohol consumption is a world-wide socioeconomic problem. Three metabolic pathways of ethanol were describe in human - alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS, CYP2E1) and catalase. Ethanol directly bounds to different molecules (e.g. etylglucuronid) and ethanol per se and its metabolites have toxic effect on biological stuctures. Alcohol abuse is well known for its liver diseases e.g. cirrhosis (the most frequent cause in Europe and US) and hepatocellular carcinoma. Chronic alcohol comsumption leads to cardiovascular diseases (e.g. hypertension, cardiom

Alcoholic hepatitis.

Alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is an acute inflammatory syndrome causing significant morbidity and mortality. The prognosis is strongly dependent on disease severity, as assessed by clinical scoring systems. Reliable epidemiological data as well as knowledge of the clinical course of AH are essential for planning and resource allocation within the health care system. Likewise, individual evaluation of risk is desirable in the clinical handling of patients with AH as it can guide treatment, improve patient information, and serve as strata in clinical trials. The present PhD thesis is based on three s

Neuropathology of alcoholism.

Chronic alcohol consumption results in structural changes to the brain. In alcoholics without coexisting thiamine deficiency or liver disease this is largely restricted to a loss of white-matter volume. When it occurs, neuronal loss is limited in anatomic distribution and only detected with quantitative techniques. This relative paucity of neurodegeneration is reflected in studies of gene and protein expression in postmortem brain where findings are subtle and discordant between studies. In alcoholics with coexisting pathologies, neuronal loss is more marked and affects a wider range of anatom

Alcoholism & depression.

One out of 2 Americans report drinking on a routine basis, making the excessive consumption of alcohol the third leading cause of preventable death in America (). Alcoholism and depression are common comorbidities that home healthcare professionals frequently encounter. To achieve the best patient outcomes, alcoholism should be addressed initially. Although all age groups are at risk, alcoholism and depression occur in more than 8 percent of older adults. Prevention through identifying alcohol use early in adolescence is vital to reduce the likelihood of alcohol dependence. This article provid

Alcoholic hallucinosis.

Alcoholic hallucinosis is a rare complication of chronic alcohol abuse characterized by predominantly auditory hallucinations that occur either during or after a period of heavy alcohol consumption. Bleuler (1916) termed the condition as alcohol hallucinosis and differentiated it from Delirium Tremens. Usually it presents with acoustic verbal hallucinations, delusions and mood disturbances arising in clear consciousness and sometimes may progress to a chronic form mimicking schizophrenia. One such case with multimodal hallucinations in a Defence Service Corps soldier is presented here.

[Alcoholic hepatitis].

Alcoholic hepatitis is one of the most severe presentations of alcoholic liver disease. It is usually revealed by the recent onset of jaundice in a patient with alcoholic cirrhosis. Maddrey's discriminant function can help to recognize patients with poor prognosis (the 6-month mortality is above 50% when it exceeds 32). Corticosteroids increase survival in those patients with high risk of death. Other treatments (pentoxifylline, N-acetyl-cysteine or enteral nutrition) need to be investigated further before to recommend their routine use instead of, or in association with, corticoids.
