BACKGROUND: Ticks are among the most important ectoparasite of cattle, causing economic losses through reduced productivity, skin damage and the transmission of tick-borne pathogens. Information on tick epidemiology, community awareness and attachment-site preferences remains limited in many parts of Ethiopia, including Tigray Region.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence, species composition, risk factors, community knowledge and attachment-site preferences of bovine ticks in selected districts of Tigray, northern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three districts

BACKGROUND: Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is associated with a potentially severe delayed immunoglobulin E-based hypersensitivity reaction produced via transmission of a salivary oligosaccharide (galactose-⍺-1,3-galactose) predominately from the bite of the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum). Sensitized people are at an increased risk of experiencing cross-reactivity reactions to numerous foods, pharmaceuticals, and medical and dental products that could result in a spectrum of pathophysiological responses, ranging from gastrointestinal and cutaneous disturbances to anaphylaxis. The authors have

BACKGROUND: The incidence of tick-borne diseases in the USA has surged in recent years, with >50 000 cases reported from an estimated half-million cases annually. While domestic vectors are well characterized, the role of human travel in transporting exotic ticks and pathogens remains poorly understood.
METHODS: We analysed 4808 submissions of ticks removed from individuals to the Tick-Borne Disease Research Laboratory in Texas, USA, from 2004 to 2024. Tick species were identified phenotypically or through DNA-based sequencing, and pathogens (Borrelia spp., Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia spp., An

Ixodid ticks are important arthropods in medicine and veterinary science, posing a considerable threat to livestock in East Africa. A repeated cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2022 to June 2023 to explore the spatial distribution, prevalence, species diversity and burden of cattle ticks, and to investigate risk factors associated with tick infestation prevalence and burden in northwest Ethiopia. A total of 2528 cattle were randomly selected through multistage cluster sampling for tick inspection across 18 districts during both dry and wet seasons. Ticks samples were identified mo

BACKGROUND: IgE to the oligosaccharide galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) is an important cause of allergic reactions to mammalian meat. The "alpha-gal syndrome" is strongly associated with a preceding history of tick bites and in the United States is most commonly reported in parts of the southeast, but there has been limited investigation into national alpha-gal sensitization patterns and the relevance of other risk factors.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically investigate alpha-gal IgE prevalence, regional patterns, and risk factors.
METHODS: Alpha-gal IgE was measured by ImmunoCAP in biob

BACKGROUND: Ticks are important vectors of various pathogenic protozoa, bacteria and viruses that cause serious and life-threatening illnesses in humans and animals worldwide. Estimating tick-borne pathogen prevalence in tick populations is necessary to delineate how geographical differences, environmental variability and host factors influence pathogen prevalence and transmission. This study identified ticks and tick-borne pathogens in samples collected from June 2016 to December 2017 at seven sites within the Coastal, Sudan and Guinea savanna ecological zones of Ghana.
METHODS: A total of 2

The role of resident or migratory birds in dispersal of tick species and tick-borne pathogens is still poorly known in Italy. We report here the results of a 3-year project based on sampling ticks from migratory birds, as well as from the vegetation at three stop-over sites for migrants, namely the islands of Ventotene (Latium), Asinara (Sardinia) and Ustica (Sicily). During the spring seasons from 2017-2019, in total 2681 ticks were collected, 2344 of which were sampled from migratory birds and 337 from the vegetation. Ticks were identified by morphology or by molecular tools when necessary.

Since 1998, Lyme disease cases have increased in south-central Pennsylvania, which includes Gettysburg National Military Park (NMP). Limited information is available about tick populations or pathogens in this area, and no data regarding frequency of tick bites or prevention measures among Gettysburg NMP employees are available. To address these gaps, ticks were collected, classified, and replaced (to minimize disruptions to tick populations) at two sites within Gettysburg NMP during April-September, 2009, among eight nonremoval samplings. On two additional occasions during May and June, 2009,

Generally, ixodid ticks are important ectoparasites of cattle, including those in smallholder production systems in the Eastern Cape Province, where varying environmental conditions influence their distribution and feeding behaviour. This study investigated ecological variation in tick species composition and attachment site preferences in Bos taurus cattle across coastal and inland areas of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Ticks were collected from cattle of different ages, sexes, breeds, and body condition scores. Sampling was conducted prior to acaricide treatment, and ticks were ma

Plant invasions may alter disease vector abundance by several mechanistic pathways, including modifying microclimates that influence vector survival or changing habitats to influence host use. Here, we used a field experiment and observational data to evaluate multiple mechanistic pathways (tick survival and host abundance) by which plant invasions may alter vector-borne disease risk using the common disease vector lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum), its preeminent host white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and the widespread invasive cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) in the southeaste

Tick-borne pathogen infections are an increasing occurrence globally, yet many aspects of pathogen maintenance and host-tick interactions remain poorly understood. Here we consider the potential role of eastern cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) in the enzootic cycles of tick-borne pathogens of medical importance in Virginia. Over a 3-year period, ticks and blood were collected from rabbits acquired through passive surveillance in 21 counties in Virginia. Seven hundred seventy ticks were collected from 90 of the 121 rabbits examined in this study. Tick species collected from the rabbits inclu

BACKGROUND: The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is well adapted in some regions of the Amazon. Of all Brazilian states, Pará contains the largest number of this species, with 510,000 animals, approximately 38% of the Brazilian buffaloes. Despite the socioeconomic importance of bubaline farming in the northern region, little is known about the prevalence of ectoparasites that affect buffalo herds. This study aimed to identify the species of buffalo ectoparasites in the municipality of Santarém, Pará, and to determine possible risk factors related to ectoparasitic infestation. A cross-sectional

Cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in North Carolina have escalated markedly since 2000. In 2005, we identified a county in the Piedmont region with high case numbers of RMSF. We collected ticks and examined them for bacterial pathogens using molecular methods to determine if a novel tick vector or spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) might be emerging. Amblyomma americanum, the lone star tick, comprised 99.6% of 6,502 specimens collected in suburban landscapes. In contrast, Dermacentor variabilis, the American dog tick, a principal vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, comprised < 1% o

Groups of cattle of four different cross-breeds (Ankole x Friesian, Ankole x Brown-Swiss, Ankole x Guernsey, Ankole x Sahiwal) plus a group of pure Ankole cattle were immunized against tick-borne diseases: East Coast Fever, using a Theileria parva trivalent vaccine, and anaplasmosis, babesiosis and, subsequently, heartwater. With the exception of two small subgroups of Ankole and Ankole x Sahiwal which were treated by weekly spraying using Delnav, all the groups were exposed to natural field challenge of ticks to quantify the development of host resistance to ticks. The results indicate resist

Rickettsia parkeri, an emerging tick-borne pathogen, is transmitted by Amblyomma maculatum. Initial bacterial inoculation occurs in the skin via infected tick bite. During blood acquisition, tick salivary factors manipulate host hemostatic and immune responses. Examination of rickettsial pathogenesis and the host response to infection in murine models primarily utilize needle inoculation. As a result, biological variables including transmission dynamics and the influence of vector saliva on the host response at the infection site are undefined. To test the hypothesis that a distinct host cutan

Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals globally. Beyond zoonotic concerns related to coronavirus, pangolins serve as hosts for ectoparasites such as ticks, which can be inadvertently transported through illegal wildlife trade and rehabilitation efforts. The transcontinental trafficking of pangolins and their derivatives poses a potential risk of pathogen spillover affecting humans, wildlife, and livestock. Despite these concerns, data on tick infestations in confiscated African pangolins and scales remain scarce. This study aims to identify tick species associated with confiscated pangolins
