Neuropsychological function in ecstasy users: a study controlling for polydrug use.

RATIONALE: A number of studies have compared ecstasy users to control groups on various measures of neuropsychological function in order to determine whether ecstasy use results in lasting cognitive deficits. However, few of those studies controlled adequately for non-ecstasy illicit drug use. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate neuropsychological function in chronic ecstasy users while controlling for polydrug use. METHODS: Neuropsychological function was assessed in four groups-30 current 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) users with a little history of illicit drug u

Illicit stimulants and ventricular arrhythmias: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation underlie many sudden cardiac deaths, but common lifestyle factors that predict their occurrence are poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the association between methamphetamine and cocaine, the most used illicit stimulants, and ventricular arrhythmias (VA) and mortality. METHODS: Healthcare databases were used to identify adults aged ≥ 18 years receiving hospital-based care in California in 2005-2019. ICD codes were used to identify diagnoses and illicit stimulant use. Cox proportional hazard models adjusting f

A prospective longitudinal analysis of opioid and stimulant use in American Indian and First Nations communities.

We describe stages of opioid and psychostimulant use (i.e., onset of use and progression to dependence) over the early life course within Indigenous communities where drug overdose impacts have been most extreme. This community-based participatory research includes 9 waves of survey data collected prior to and during the unfolding of the overdose epidemic in North America (2002-2017) on/near 8 distinct American Indian reservations or First Nation reserves. Substance use (psychostimulants, prescription pain pill misuse, and heroin) was assessed via structured diagnostic interviews. Discrete tim

Prevalence and correlates of amphetamine-type stimulant use among transgender women in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: The use of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) is associated with increases in HIV infections and other negative health outcomes. Globally, transgender women are among the most vulnerable to HIV. In this paper, we report the prevalence and correlates of ATS use among transgender women in Cambodia. METHODS: In 2016, 1375 transgender women were recruited for the National Integrated Biological and Behavioural Survey using respondent-driven sampling method. Participants were recruited from the capital city of Phnom Penh and 12 other provinces. A structured questionnaire was used to coll

Recent trends in pharmaceutical drug use among frequent injecting drug users, frequent methamphetamine users and frequent ecstasy users in New Zealand, 2006-2009.

AIMS: To examine the rates of pharmaceutical drug use, and level of prescription use and injection of pharmaceutical drugs, by frequent injecting drug users (IDU), frequent methamphetamine users and frequent ecstasy users in New Zealand for 2006-2009. DESIGN AND METHOD: The paper draws on findings from the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Illicit Drug Monitoring System (IDMS). The IDMS interviews three groups of frequent illegal drug users (i.e. IDU, methamphetamine users and ecstasy users) from the three main cities of New Zealand using purposive sampling and 'snowballing'. RESULTS: Pharmaceutical

Impaired physical health among methamphetamine users in comparison with the general population: the role of methamphetamine dependence and opioid use.

AIM: To examine the extent of physical health impairment among a community sample of methamphetamine users in comparison with the general population, and factors associated with impairment among this group. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 309 regular methamphetamine users from Sydney. The Physical Component Scale of the Short Form 12 (SF-12) was used to measure impairment in physical health (score < 40). Age-matched general population data for the SF-12 were derived from the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Well-Being. RESULTS: Participants had a higher prevalence of impai

Tripling of methamphetamine/amphetamine use among homeless and marginally housed persons, 1996-2003.

Methamphetamine/amphetamine (MA)-related morbidity and mortality has been increasing in the United States. MA use is associated with high-risk sexual behavior and syringe-sharing practices. Homeless and marginalized housed persons (H/M) have high rates of substance use and mental health disorders. Little is known about trends of MA use among the H/M. The objective of this study was to quantify increases in MA use among H/M in San Francisco and to determine which demographic and behavioral subgroups have experienced the greatest increases in MA use. We conducted serial cross-sectional populatio

Decreased activity of brain phospholipid metabolic enzymes in human users of cocaine and methamphetamine.

Phospholipids are essential components of cell membranes which may also function to mediate some of the behavioural effects of dopamine receptor stimulation caused by psychostimulant drugs. Neuroimaging and pharmacological data suggest that abnormal brain metabolism of phospholipids might explain some of the consequences of chronic exposure to drugs of abuse including drug craving. We previously reported decreased activity of calcium-stimulated phospholipase A(2) (Ca-PLA(2)) in autopsied putamen of human cocaine users. To establish the specificity of this change in phospholipid metabolism and

[Drug abuse among new draftees].

The aim of the study was to investigate the pattern of the use of drugs among young conscripts by a test screening of their urine. The participants in the investigation also filled in a questionnaire about use of drugs. The urine samples from 916 young recruits were examined for cannabinoids and 429 were also examined for amphetamines, cocaine, opiates and benzodiazepines. We found 68 (7.8%) positive tests for cannabis and a negligible number of positive tests for other drugs. The questionnaire showed a lower statement of use of drugs though 3.3% stated a daily or weekly use of cannabis. Fifty

Development of psychiatric illness in drug abusers. Possible role of drug preference.

The origin of the psychiatric illnesses observed in drug abusers is often unclear. This study examines the causal relation between drug abuse and specific psychiatric disorders. Fifty-one male veterans first seen in 1972, who were admitted at least once per year for six consecutive years for inpatient drug-abuse treatment, underwent psychiatric assessments at each admission. Eleven men mainly used stimulants, 14 depressants, and 26 opiates. Initial psychiatric examinations showed low symptom levels in all groups but no statistically significant differences among them. By the end of six years,

Analgesia in phasic and tonic pain tests in a pharmacological model of autotomy.

Self-mutilation or self-injurious behaviour is a well known behavioural disorder in humans. The proposition that this behaviour in animals is a response to chronic pain of peripheral nerve injury has been met with controversy. In the present study a pharmacological model, which produces no sensory or motor loss was used to study how autotomy is related to pain. In a group of rats autotomy was induced by amphetamine in phenoxybenzamine and reserpine treated animals. The pain tests, both phasic and tonic were then performed. The results of this study showed that a total analgesia was produced in

Psychoactive Substance Use in Germany: Findings From the Epidemiological Survey of Substance Abuse (ESA) in 2024.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring the use of psychoactive substances and the prevalence of substance-related disorders in the general population enables estimation of the extent of substance abuse and its effects on health and society. METHODS: Data are from the Epidemiological Survey of Substance Abuse (ESA) for 2024 (n = 7534, aged 18-64 years). Prevalence rates were calculated for the use of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, illegal drugs, and medications, and for individuals who met the DSM-IV criteria for dependency or abuse. Rates were extrapolated to the German resident population aged 18 to 64 (51 480

[Current situation of substance abuse/dependence in psychiatric hospital settings].

Over the last several years, Japan has been facing its third epidemic of methamphetamine abuse. Methamphetamine and MDMA are categorized as Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS), and abuse of these substances has become a worldwide problem. A nationwide mental hospital survey on substance-related psychiatric disorders in Japan has been conducted since 1987 to clarify the current situation of Japan's substance abuse and dependence. Recent surveys show that methamphetamine and organic solvents are the most common substances of abuse in hospital settings. Fifty-five percent of all the patients includ

Item response theory analyses of DSM-IV and DSM-5 stimulant use disorder criteria in an American Indian community sample.

BACKGROUND: Native Americans experience some of the highest rates of DSM-IV stimulant dependence (SD) of all U.S. ethnic groups. This report compares DSM-IV and DSM-5 stimulant use disorder (SUD) diagnostic criteria in an American Indian community sample. METHODS: Demographic information, stimulant (methamphetamine or cocaine) use, and lifetime DSM-IV and DSM-5 diagnoses were assessed in 858 adult American Indians. Item Response Theory (IRT) analyses were used to assess SUD criteria in both DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria sets along an underlying latent trait severity continuum and the effect of de

Drug taking in adolescent girls: factors associated with the progression to narcotic use.

A follow-up study of girls in a London remand home during the years 1966-8 showed that 20.6% of those taking non-narcotic drugs on admission, but only 1% of non-drug-taking control admissions, had used narcotics by June 1970. Narcotic use on admission and progression to narcotic use were associated with frequent drug taking, marked involvement in a drug milieu, and a high incidence of personal morbidity. Adolescents who use illicit drugs and have a history of court appearances for any reason are particularly vulnerable to subsequent narcotic usage and other forms of serious drug abuse.

The effect of rTMS combined with physical exercise on people with methamphetamine use disorders: An acute experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of acute physical exercise for substance use disorders have received extensive attention, but it is currently unclear whether adding repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) based on exercise can achieve the superposition of benefits. This study aims to explore the acute effect and potential mechanism of rTMS combined with physical exercise on people with methamphetamine use disorders (MUD), and reveal the differences in effects among different models. METHODS: 64 men with MUD were randomly divided into the physical exercise group (PEG), low-frequency rTMS

The need for speed: An investigation on the psychological dysfunction underlying risky driving behaviors in crystal methamphetamine users.

INTRODUCTION: Crystal methamphetamine is an illicit substance known to be associated with psychological disorder, aggressive behavior, and a significantly increased crash risk. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the links between likely methamphetamine dependency, psychological dysfunctioning (i.e., thought disorganization, emotional impulsivity, psychopathology), aberrant beliefs (i.e., antisocial beliefs about anger, positive beliefs about driving under the influence of methamphetamines [DUIM]), and risky driving behaviors (i.e., DUIM, aggressive driving, dissociative driving).
