Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala hookworms: Morphological and molecular differentiation and epidemiological data in Southern Italy.

Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala are the most prevalent canine hookworms worldwide, both having veterinary and public health importance. Considering the emergence of anthelmintic resistance in A. caninum and the inefficacy of milbemycin oxime against U. stenocephala, the accurate diagnosis is essential, especially in areas where they occur in sympatry. Here, we differentiated hookworm species in naturally infected dogs from southern Italy, using coproculture and morphometric analysis of third-stage larvae (L3) and eggs, along with molecular characterization. Dog fecal samples (n

High prevalence of Ancylostoma caninum infection in black-eared opossums (Didelphis aurita) in an urban environment.

Marsupials of the genus Didelphis, such as black-eared opossums (Didelphis aurita), are common synanthropic animals in urban areas of Brazil. These marsupials are frequently parasitized by numerous helminth species, including ancylostomatid nematodes. This study aimed to report the occurrence of Ancylostoma caninum in black-eared opossums captured in an urban environment of Southeastern Brazil and discuss the potential impact of these findings for public health. From January to June 2019, we collected fecal samples from 49 restrained opossums and evaluated by a simple flotation method; Helmint

A New Species of Ancylostoma (Nemata: Strongylida: Ancylostomatidae) from Two Species of Ctenomys in Lowland Bolivia.

From the small intestines of both Ctenomys boliviensis and Ctenomys steinbachi collected from August 1984 through June 1990 from the eastern lowlands of the Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia a total of 36 specimens of Ancylostoma were recovered. Morphological investigation and comparisons with known species described and reported from mammals in the Neotropical Region show that this is an undescribed species, herein described as new. These nematans were collected from individuals of C. steinbachi collected from near a locality called Caranda (northwest of Santa Cruz de la Sierra) and from C. b

First identification of the F200Y SNP in the β-tubulin gene linked to benzimidazole resistance in Ancylostoma caninum.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the β-tubulin isotype 1 gene in codons 167, 198 and 200 have been associated with benzimidazole resistance in some nematodes, although no polymorphisms in this gene have been described in the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum to date. This study aimed to screen for SNPs in the β-tubulin isotype 1 gene at codons 198 and 200 associated with benzimidazole resistance in A. caninum worms recovered from naturally infected dogs from two Brazilian states (Minas Gerais and Piauí). To perform this analysis, a molecular technique based on the amplification refractory

Comparison of Ancylostoma caninum worm counts acquired by endoscopy and necropsy.

Many regulatory agencies require that the efficacy of veterinary anthelmintic medications be evaluated by enumerating parasites in treated and untreated animals after necropsy. Current ethical considerations, i.e., the 3 Rs of research, call for the replacement of this method with less invasive techniques that would not require animal sacrifice. This study tested standard gastrointestinal endoscopy as an in vivo method of quantifying the intestinal hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum. Worm counts were compared with those from gold standard necropsy. Thirteen dogs inoculated with third-stage A. canin

Obtaining an isolate of Ancylostoma braziliense from dogs without the need for necropsy.

Isolation of a specific Ancylostoma species typically requires death of the source animal, or holding an animal long enough to collect feces after treatment, for worm recovery and identification. The reason for collecting worms is that the eggs are not easy to distinguish morphologically. In keeping with the 3 Rs of laboratory animal research (reduction, refinement, replacement), the objective of this study was to obtain an isolate of Ancylostoma braziliense from 1-time field-collected samples of canine feces without the need for killing the host. During a collection trip to Florida, fecal sam

In vitro predatory activity of the fungi Duddingtonia flagrans, Monacrosporium thaumasium, Monacrosporium sinense and Arthrobotrys robusta on Ancylostoma ceylanicum third-stage larvae.

The potential role of companion animals as reservoirs for zoonotic diseases has been recognised as a significant public health problem worldwide. Ancylostoma ceylanicum is the only ancylostomatidae species known for infecting human beings. This article aimed to compare the predatory capacity of predatory fungi isolates Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001), Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34), Monacrosporium sinense (SF53) and Arthrobotrys robusta (I31) on A. ceylanicum infectious larvae (L(3)) in a 2% water-agar plate. There was no predatory capacity variation among the fungi tested (P>0.05) over the 7-

A distinctive aphthous ileitis linked to Ancylostoma caninum.

Ileal ulceration is diagnosed commonly at colonoscopy in northeastern Australia. This observation has occurred contemporaneously with the description of a painful enteritis caused through supposedly rare infections by Ancylostoma caninum, the cosmopolitan dog hookworm. In this study, we describe the morphology and prevalence of ileal ulcers and investigate their cause. There were 182 patients with a distinctive aphthous ileitis highlighted by haemorrhage into the tips of surrounding villi. The annual rate reached 4.7% of ileal examinations. Eosinophilic enteritis was the characteristic, but in

Haematological changes in dogs infected with Ancylostoma duodenale.

A definite relation between the intensity of Ancylostoma duodenale and haematological changes in dogs were studied. There was a relation between the increase in egg count with the haemoglobin percentage. The present study reported haematological data collected during the acute phase of experimental infection with A. duodenale.

Sensitivity to ivermectin and pyrantel of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Necator americanus.

Experiments were carried out in the hamster to compare the relative susceptibility of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum to treatment with ivermectin. A. ceylanicum was found to be 300 times more sensitive to the anthelmintic with a 50% effective dose (ED50) of the order of 10-15 micrograms kg-1 body weight whilst that for N. americanus approximated to 3-5 mg kg-1. Furthermore, whereas complete clearance of A. ceylanicum was observed with a dose of 100 micrograms kg-1, N. americanus was not totally removed after treatment with 25 mg kg-1, the highest dose tested. Both parasites prov

Comparison of immune response in Swiss albino mice due to single and repeated doses of infective Ancylostoma caninum larvae after subcutaneous inoculation.

Migratory behaviour of Ancylostoma caninum larvae and host responses were studied in four groups of Swiss albino mice infected subcutaneously with single doses of 1,000, 2,000 and multiple doses of 500 + 500, 500 + 500 + 1,000. After the 1st day most of the larvae found in muscles in all the groups. There is no significant difference in the migratory behaviour and/or the adoptive pattern of larvae in both the singly and multiply infected animals.

Hookworms and the species infecting man in Zambia.

The rate of hookworm infections, determined by stool examination over a 7-month period, was 16.56% in medical examinees and 19.91% in in-patients in an urban hospital population in Zambia. The egg-load though was low. Culture of ova to the filariform larval stage, examination of adult worms expelled after anthelminthic treatment and collected at autopsy confirmed that the dominant species was Necator americanus. However, we report, perhaps for the first time, the presence of Ancylostoma duodenale in man in Zambia. Such information is important in assessing the clinical significance of hookworm
