The decisions and conditions of animals often carry over to influence fitness in subsequent seasons or years. The condition, choices, and behaviors of parents may have a huge influence on offspring survival, not only when they are nutritionally dependent (i.e., pre-weaning or pre-fledgling), but also after they have reached independence but before adulthood (i.e., post-weaning or post-fledgling). Using a long-lived, iteroparous mammal, we evaluated the hypothesis that carryover effects of a mother's condition (i.e., age and nutritional condition) and her behavior and decisions during the first

Wings with an elongated shape or larger surface area are associated with increased flight efficiency in a wide range of animals from insects to birds.1,2,3,4 Inter- and intra-specific variation in these attributes of wing shape is determined by a range of factors-including foraging ecology, migration, and climatic seasonality5,6,7,8-all of which may drive latitudinal gradients in wing morphology.9,10 A separate hypothesis predicts that wing shape should also follow an elevational gradient5,11 because air density declines with altitude,12 altering the aerodynamics of flight and driving the evol

Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) is a highly prevalent overuse injury affecting the foot and ankle in clinical settings. Currently, the primary management approach is conservative treatment. Platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes (PRP-Exos) effectively preserve essential growth factors and other vital components inherent in PRP, thereby optimizing overall treatment outcomes. Furthermore, the standardized microinjection technique for PRP-Exos significantly enhances the treatment experience for patients. In this study, PRP-Exos were isolated from SD rats, and their effects on proliferation

Administration of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) to pregnant rats causes reproductive disorders in male offspring, resulting from suppression of intratesticular testosterone, and is used as a model for human testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS). DBP exposure in pregnancy induces focal dysgenetic areas in fetal testes that appear between e19.5-e21.5, manifesting as focal aggregation of Leydig cells and ectopic Sertoli cells (SC). Our aim was to identify the origins of the ectopic SC. Time-mated female rats were administered 750 mg/kg/day DBP in three different time windows: full window (FW; e13.5-e20.

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is an animal model in which the immunological mechanisms of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in humans can be studied but is also widely used in the study of many basic immunological mechanisms. In CHS, a pre-sensitized animal is re-exposed to an antigen, thereby eliciting an immunological reaction at the site of antigen exposure. CHS consists of two phases: sensitization and elicitation phase. In the sensitization phase, the first contact of the skin with a hapten leads to binding of the hapten to an endogenous protein in the skin where they form hapten-carrier

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) develops when extravasated arterial blood enters subarachnoid space and mixes with cerebrospinal fluid. As a result, many pathologies develop, including increase in brain-blood barrier (BBB) permeability and activation of peripheral leukocytes, that in turn augments immuno-inflammatory response, considered as the cause of numerous complications following SAH. In the study, we examined the role of one of major cytokines, interleukin 1-beta (IL-1beta), in the BBB rupture and subsequent migration of leukocytes into central nervous system (CNS) after experimental SAH

Although many studies have demonstrated the physiological action of motilin on the migrating motor complex, the precise mechanisms remain obscure. To obtain new insights into the mechanisms, we focused on the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus, suncus used as a laboratory name) as a small model animal for in vivo motilin study, and we studied the physiological characteristics of suncus gastrointestinal motility. Strain gauge transducers were implanted on the serosa of the gastric body and duodenum, and we recorded gastrointestinal contractions in the free-moving conscious suncus and also examine

Radiopaque polymeric microspheres have a potential as new bulking agents for treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The advantage over existing bulking agents lies in their X-ray visibility in situ; other polymeric bulking agents (e.g., PTFE or silicone rubbers) are practically radiolucent (i.e., incapable of absorbing X-radiation). Radiopacity is useful in practice because of the high spatial accuracy of X-ray imaging. For instance, X-ray fluoroscopy can be used to assess possible migration of the bulking agent over time or to provide guidance in cases in which a second injection of

Gallstone pancreatitis is triggered by migrating stones that cause transient or continuous bile-pancreatic duct obstruction. One might hypothesize that the great clinical variability of acute pancreatitis is related to the inconsistent number and duration of a series of stone migrations. A new setting for the opossum model of acute pancreatitis was developed allowing reversible bile-pancreatic duct obstructions. We compared the effects, on the pancreas and pancreatitis severity, of repeated transient obstructions to those of continuous obstruction of varying duration. Repetitive intermittent d

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) may support axonal regrowth, and thus might be a viable treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI); however, peripherally-derived OECs remain untested in most animal models of SCI. We have transplanted OECs from the lamina propria (LP) of mice expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) in all cell types into immunosuppressed rats with cervical or lumbar dorsal root injuries. LP-OECs were deposited into either the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), intact or injured dorsal roots, or the dorsal columns via the dorsal root entry zone (DREZ). LP-OECs injected into the DRG o

We have previously shown that the combination of immunotherapy with interleukin 2 (IL-2) and local hyperthermia (LHT) abrogates the growth of murine subcutaneous tumors significantly more than either modality alone. This study was undertaken to investigate whether the beneficial effect of combined modality therapy could be attributed to increased trafficking of effector cells to the tumor. After inducing MCA-105 sarcomas in the hindlimbs of C57BL/6 mice, animals were given no therapy, LHT, IL-2, or IL-2 + LHT followed by an iv injection of 51Cr-labeled syngeneic splenocytes or LAK cells. Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common malignancy and the fifth highest cause of cancer-related deaths on a global scale. This study reveals that miR-106b-5p promotes malignant phenotypes in GC by targeting retinoblastoma-like protein 2 (RBL2). Using miR-106b-5p mimic/inhibitor and RBL2 overexpression plasmids in AGS/HGC-27 cells, this study demonstrates that miR-106b-5p promotes proliferation (CCK-8/clone formation) and migration/invasion (Transwell assay) and suppresses apoptosis (flow cytometry), while RBL2 rescues these effects. Luciferase assays confirm that miR-106b-5p directly bin

The widespread use of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) has raised concerns regarding its potential on pregnant women, particularly in relation to the development of pre-eclampsia (PE). This study investigates the impact of PFOS exposure on the LncRNA/Rnd3 axis in pregnant mice and its association with trophoblast cell functions in PE. Bioinformatics analysis revealed PFOS-related gene alterations in PE, with pathways enriched in apoptotic signaling and cytokine interactions. Experimental findings showed the downregulation of Oip5os1 and Rnd3, along with the upregulation of miR-155, affectin

Ethanol and its metabolite acetaldehyde increase transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) expression in animal studies. TGF-beta1 is related with the hepatic stellate cell (the key element of hepatic fibrogenesis) and the radial glia (the key element of neuronal migration). Blood samples were collected from 41 patients with alcohol dependence, TGF-beta1 levels measured by ELISA were compared with 41 normal subjects. Plasma TGF-beta1 levels in the patients with alcohol dependence (1,653.11+/-532.45 pg/mL) were significantly higher than those of healthy subjects (669.87+/-366.53 pg/mL) (P=0.

The healing process of gastric ulcers is regulated by many factors. Cytokines play a central role in the different stages of healing. In the early stage of inflammation, TNF-alpha and interleukins regulate cell-migration and -proliferation. In the ulcer's base revascularisation is stimulated by b-FGF, collagen synthesis by TGF-beta. The reepithelialization is mediated by EGF, which accelerates ulcer healing in animal models, while TGF-alpha is involved in mucosal protection. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is important for the stability and quality of the ulcer scar, as known from dermatologica

Migratory birds can carry parasites thousands of miles, and therefore their parasite communities may provide an informative means of ascertaining the breeding and wintering locations of their hosts. However, avian parasites (particularly haemosporidians) are rarely used for this purpose because their usefulness is conditional upon knowing where and when birds acquired them during their annual cycles. In this study, we evaluated haemosporidian assemblages among non-resident black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus), which occasionally "irrupt" south from parts of their northern distributio

Tsetse flies of the palpalis group, particularly Glossina fuscipes, are the main vectors of human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness in Congo-Brazzaville. They transmit the deadly human parasite, Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and other trypanosomes that cause animal trypanosomiasis. Knowledge on diversity, population structure, population size, and gene flow is a prerequisite for designing effective tsetse control strategies. There is limited published information on these parameters including migration patterns of G. fuscipes in Congo-Brazzaville. We genotyped 288 samples of G. fusci

The experimental infection of mice with Toxocara cati provides one of the best models for pathological and immunological study of the visceral larva migrans syndrome. To broaden our knowledge of T. cati larval migration, BALB/c mice were inoculated with 500 embryonated eggs of T. cati for a period of two months. In the present study, T. cati eggs, obtained from faeces of naturally infected cats, were used for infection. After oral infection of 500 embryonated eggs of T. cati, mice were euthanised at 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 70 days post-infection (dpi) in groups of three per day. System

Transplantation of stem cell-derived retinal neurons is a promising regenerative therapy for optic neuropathy. However, significant anatomic differences compromise its efficacy in large animal models. The present study describes the procedure and outcomes of human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived retinal sheet transplantation in primate models using biodegradable materials. Stem cell-derived retinal organoids were seeded on polylactic-coglycolic acid (PLGA) scaffolds and directed toward a retinal ganglion cell (RGC) fate. The seeded tissues showed active proliferation, typical neu

In animals with complex life cycles, all resources needed to form adult tissues are procured at the larval stage. For butterflies, the proper development of wings involves synthesizing tissue during metamorphosis based on the raw materials obtained by larvae. Similarly, manufacture of pigment for wing scales also requires resources acquired by larvae. We conducted an experiment to test the effects of food deprivation in the larval stage on multiple measures of adult wing morphology and coloration of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), a species in which long-distance migration makes flight
