INTRODUCTION: Intracranial arachnoid cysts (IAC) in children are a common incidental finding on imaging. Most IACs are asymptomatic and can be monitored; however, a small percentage may enlarge and require surgical intervention. This study aimed to identify clinical risk factors in patients with IAC who underwent surgery versus those who did not.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review from 2009 to 2021 at a free-standing children's hospital. A total of 230 patients diagnosed with an IAC aged 0-21 years of age were included in the study. Data on demographics, imaging, and neurologi

Spinal arachnoid web (AW) is a rare condition causing spinal cord-related issues. Its cause is often idiopathic but can be linked to past trauma or spine surgery. We describe two cases of AWs that developed after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Case #1 is a 71-year-old male with nonaneurysmal SAH who developed myelopathy 1 year later. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed upper thoracic cord edema and an AW. Case #2 is a 57-year-old female who underwent coiling of a ruptured basilar artery aneurysm and ventriculoperitoneal shunting for hydrocephalus. Twenty months later, she developed mid-thoraci

BACKGROUND: Spinal arachnoid cysts are relatively uncommon, cerebrospinal fluid-filled sacs formed by arachnoid membranes that can be either idiopathic or acquired. The neurological presentation of these cysts is varied. Advances in imaging techniques have allowed an improved characterization of these entities and excluded other possible causes of clinical manifestation. Their presentation remains varied, ranging from pain to progressive neurological deficits. Here, we present two cases of patients with thoracic arachnoid cysts that posed a diagnostic dilemma at initial presentation because of

The formation of an intradural extramedullary arachnoid cyst is a rare complication of spinal anesthesia. We present a case of a 34-year-old female patient who developed neurological symptoms including a bilateral reduction in sensation and strength in the lower limbs following a C-section under spinal anesthesia. MRI of the thoracic spine revealed a lesion at the level of T11/T12 and the upper limit of the L1 vertebral body, which was pushing the cord to the side, and a diagnosis of the intradural extramedullary arachnoid cyst was established. The prognosis for this condition is good and surg

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: In recent years, sellar arachnoid cysts (ACs) have been increasingly treated using an endoscopic transnasal approach. It is important to connect the subarachnoid space with the AC to prevent recurrence; however, a high frequency of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage has been reported with the endoscopic transnasal approach, and the suitability of the endoscopic transnasal approach for treating sellar ACs is questionable to begin with.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A man in his 40s underwent surgery for a sellar AC compressing the optic chiasm. The normal pitui

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are benign lesions typically believed to not cause neurologic defects in the adult population and are most often found incidentally on imaging. We describe 2 patients with ACs potentially leading to isolated cranial nerve (CN) dysfunction.
METHODS: We describe 2 patients, 1 with a fourth nerve palsy and the other with a sixth nerve palsy found to have ACs on MRI brain imaging in locations that potentially caused a compressive CN palsy. We review previous literature of ACs presenting with CN III, IV, or VI palsy.
RESULTS: Patient 1 was a 62-year-old man who p

BACKGROUND: Intracranial arachnoid cysts are extra-axial benign lesions mainly found in the middle cerebral fossa. Rare case series report various cranial nerve dysfunctions associated with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) cysts and there is no consensus with regard to their surgical management; some reports claiming that subjective improvement in adults with intracranial arachnoid cysts cannot justify surgical treatment.
METHODS: This retrospective study included all 12 consecutive adult patients treated by microsurgical fenestration for symptomatic CPA arachnoid cysts between 2010 and 2019 and

INTRODUCTION: arachnoid cyst-associated subdural fluid collections have been documented in children and adults following traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, this phenomenon has not been previously demonstrated in infants less than 12 months of age. We present a case of an infant with bilateral arachnoid cyst-associated subdural fluid collections identified after TBI.
CASE PRESENTATION: a 9-month-old female infant with profound macrocephaly presented to medical care with altered mental status following a witnessed fall down steps while unsecured in a stroller. Neuroimaging revealed bilatera

Arachnoid cysts (AC) are spaces with cerebrospinal fluid covered with arachnoid membrane. Most cysts are supratentorial and only 10-12% of ACs are found in posterior cranial fossa. This disease is usually diagnosed in childhood. In adults, ACs make up 1.4% of all focal lesions. ACs of posterior cranial fossa are often localized behind the cerebellum or in cerebellopontine angle. Most patients with cysts do not have permanent symptoms and should be followed-up. Surgery is indicated for cysts complicated by focal and hydrocephalic-hypertension symptoms. Microsurgical or endoscopic procedures are

BACKGROUND: The ectopic posterior pituitary (EPP) is a rare condition characterized by the ectopic location of the posterior pituitary lobe associated with varying degrees of stalk anomalies. The arachnoid cysts (AC) are benign lesions of the arachnoid, which account for 1% of all intracranial space-occupying lesions. Sellar/suprasellar ACs account for approximately 1% of all ACs. This is the first case of coexistence EPP with sellar/suprasellar AC.

INTRODUCTION: Arachnoid cysts are congenital, benign lesions in the brain and are often incidental radiological findings. Frequently, the arachnoid cysts are left untreated; however, recent studies have shown that arachnoid cysts can cause cognitive dysfunction that affect quality of life. Moreover, the function can improve after surgical decompression. Hence, there is controversy regarding symptomatology and treatment effects of arachnoid cysts. The aim of the study was to analyse if arachnoid cysts can cause cognitive impairment and subjective symptoms and if these impairments are reversible

A tendency for suprasellar arachnoid cysts (SACs) to occur in young children is known. Data of adult SACs were rare in previous reports. The aim of this study is to discuss their clinical presentations, radiological features, and treatment outcomes based on 23 adult patients who underwent endoscopic fenestration in our hospital between January 2003 and December 2018. Preoperative cyst volume ranged from 12.3 to 72.5 cm3 (mean 39.8 ± 19.8). Endocrine disorders occurred in 7 (30.4%) patients. Hydrocephalus was observed in 20 patients. In the patients with hydrocephalus, the mean preoperative Eva

BACKGROUND: Generally, enlargement of arachnoid cysts (ACs) has been found mostly in cases occurring during early childhood. Therefore, progressively enlarged ACs found to be symptomatic in elderly patients are extremely rare, and the mechanisms have remained unexplored.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Our first patient was a 72-year-old woman with memory disturbance, who had presented with a large cyst beneath the right temporal convexity 9 years previously. The annual follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies had revealed that the cyst had progressively enlarged. In addition, her memory disturba

INTRODUCTION AND STUDY DESIGN: Spinal arachnoid cyst is an uncommon entity, presenting with radiculopathy or paraparesis. These cysts are usually found in intradural extramedullary region; and the extradural region is a rare location. The exact pathogenesis in the existence of these cysts in the extradural region is still debated. In this article, we have retrospectively analyzed the clinical profile of the rare extradural arachnoid cyst (EDAC).
METHODOLOGY: In this study, 19 patients of EDAC operated at our institute between January 2006 to June 2016 are analyzed. All patients with the Oswes

OBJECTIVE: The goal in this study was to describe the overall organization of the spinal arachnoid mater and spinal subarachnoid space (SSAS) as well as its relationship with surrounding structures, in order to highlight spinal cord arachnoid cisterns.
METHODS: Fifteen spinal cords were extracted from embalmed adult cadavers. The organization of the spinal cord arachnoid and SSAS was described via macroscopic observations, optical microscopic views, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies. Gelatin injections were also performed to study separated dorsal subarachnoid compartments.

BACKGROUND: Spinal intradural arachnoid cysts are rare in the pediatric population. We present a rare case of intradural spinal arachnoid cysts that spontaneously and repeatedly disappeared and reoccurred.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-year-and-8-months-old boy presenting with lower extremity weakness was found to have spinal intradural arachnoid cysts in cervical and thoracolumbar regions at separate times. Although spontaneous disappearance of both lesions was observed, surgical treatment was finally performed for the symptomatic recurrent thoracolumbar lesion.
CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our know

OBJECTIVE Subjective improvement of patients who have undergone surgery for intracranial arachnoid cysts has justified surgical treatment. The current study aimed to evaluate the outcome of surgical treatment for arachnoid cysts using standardized interviews and assessments of neuropsychological function and balance. The relationship between arachnoid cyst location, postoperative improvement, and arachnoid cyst volume was also examined. METHODS The authors performed a prospective, population-based study. One hundred nine patients underwent neurological, neuropsychological, and physiotherapeuti

A 59-year-old man with history of multiple sclerosis and residual sensory and motor dysfunction presented with progressive lower-extremity weakness, ataxic gait, and intermittent urinary incontinence. Brain MRI demonstrated volume loss with disproportionate ventricular dilatation, but no evidence of infarction or abnormal enhancement. Radionuclide cisternography showed early and persistent ventricular reflux, poor progression of radiopharmaceutical over convexities, and delayed clearance in a pattern consistent with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Asymmetric activity in the right parietal regio
