Digitally fabricated 3D slippery architectures for multifunctional liquid manipulation.

The primary challenge in creating controllable liquid-based materials lies in managing the structural complexities and multiscale interfaces … slippery objects with solid-liquid composite interfaces and geometric design freedom. The slippery architecture has been demonstrated through digital printing of photopolymerization-induced multiphase materials and photoinduced grafting, enabling precise control over structural topologies and slippery properties of infused liquids. This versatile platform fac …

Integrative Multiomics Insights into the Genetic and Epigenetic Architecture of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder driven by complex genetic and molecular interactions. Despite major advances in genomics, current discoveries explain less than 40% of AD heritability, underscoring the need for integrative approaches that capture cross-omic regulation. Here, we propose a multiomics integration framework combining genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic data sets to identify convergent molecular signatures underlying AD pathogenesis. An integrated epigenome-wide association study-genome wide association study (EWAS-GWAS) analysis using Gen

CIB2 function is distinct from that of whirlin in the organization of sterocilia architecture.

Humans and mice with mutations in genes encoding CIB2 and whirlin (WHRN) are deaf. We previously reported that CIB2 binds to WHRN and is essential for stereocilia staircase architecture of cochlear hair cells. Here, we refine the interaction domains of both proteins and show that these proteins play unique roles in stereocilia bundle formation and organization. We found that the EF2 domain of CIB2 binds to the HHD2 region of WHRN. AlphaFold2 multimer independently identified the same interacting regions and gave a thorough structural model. Next, we investigated genetic interaction between mur…

Ultrasound for the assessment of muscle architecture in Parkinson's disease: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) affects motor function and muscle performance, which are closely linked to muscle architecture (MA). Ultrasound (US) provides a non-invasive method to assess MA, yet its application in PD remains underexplored. This review aimed to map and synthesise existing research on US assessment of MA in individuals with PD to clarify how US imaging methodologies contribute to understanding muscle structure and function in this population. METHODS: This scoping review was conducted following established guidelines and searching these databases: Scopus, PubMed, Web of…

Autism is associated with in vivo changes in gray matter neurite architecture.

Postmortem investigations in autism have identified anomalies in neural cytoarchitecture across limbic, cerebellar, and neocortical networks. These anomalies include narrow cell mini-columns and variable neuron density. However, difficulty obtaining sufficient post-mortem samples has often prevented investigations from converging on reproducible measures. Recent advances in processing magnetic resonance diffusion weighted images (DWI) make in vivo characterization of neuronal cytoarchitecture a potential alternative to post-mortem studies. Using extensive DWI data from the Adolescent Brain Cog…

An atlas of the shared genetic architecture between atopic and gastrointestinal diseases.

Comorbidity among atopic diseases (ADs) and gastrointestinal diseases (GIDs) has been repeatedly demonstrated by epidemiological studies, whereas the shared genetic liability remains largely unknown. Here we establish an atlas of the shared genetic architecture between 10 ADs or related traits and 11 GIDs, comprehensively investigating the comorbidity-associated genomic regions, cell types, genes and genetically predicted causality. Although distinct genetic correlations between AD-GID are observed, including 14 genome-wide and 28 regional correlations, genetic factors of Crohn's disease (CD),…

Exploring Convolutional Neural Network Architectures for EEG Feature Extraction.

The main purpose of this paper is to provide information on how to create a convolutional neural network (CNN) for extracting features from EEG signals. Our task was to understand the primary aspects of creating and fine-tuning CNNs for various application scenarios. We considered the characteristics of EEG signals, coupled with an exploration of various signal processing and data preparation techniques. These techniques include noise reduction, filtering, encoding, decoding, and dimension reduction, among others. In addition, we conduct an in-depth analysis of well-known CNN architectures, ca…

The pivotal role of the X-chromosome in the genetic architecture of the human brain.

Genes on the X-chromosome are extensively expressed in the human brain. However, little is known for the X-chromosome's impact on the brain anatomy, microstructure, and functional network. We examined 1,045 complex brain imaging traits from 38,529 participants in the UK Biobank. We unveiled potential autosome-X-chromosome interactions, while proposing an atlas outlining dosage compensation (DC) for brain imaging traits. Through extensive association studies, we identified 72 genome-wide significant trait-locus pairs (including 29 new associations) that share genetic architectures with brain-re…

Sex differences in sleep architecture in a mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances are common features of Huntington's disease (HD). HD is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that affects men and women in equal numbers, but some epidemiological studies as well as preclinical work indicate there may be sex differences in disease presentation and progression. Since sex differences in HD could provide important insights to understand cellular and molecular mechanism(s), we used the bacterial artificial chromosome transgenic mouse model of HD (BACHD) to examine whether sex differences in sleep/wake cycles are detectable in an

Ultraviolet Superradiance from Mega-Networks of Tryptophan in Biological Architectures.

Networks of tryptophan (Trp)─an aromatic amino acid with strong fluorescence response─are ubiquitous in biological systems, forming diverse architectures in transmembrane proteins, cytoskeletal filaments, subneuronal elements, photoreceptor complexes, virion capsids, and other cellular structures. We analyze the cooperative effects induced by ultraviolet (UV) excitation of several biologically relevant Trp mega-networks, thus giving insights into novel mechanisms for cellular signaling and control. Our theoretical analysis in the single-excitation manifold predicts the formation of strongly su…

Evolution of posture in amniotes-Diving into the trabecular architecture of the femoral head.

Here, we study the link between femoral posture and the femoral trabecular architecture using phylogenetic generalized least squares. We show that microanatomical parameters measured on bone cubes extracted from the femoral head of a sample of amniote femora depend strongly on body mass, but not on femoral posture or lifestyle.
