A 14-year-old Iranian girl was referred for evaluation of bilateral elevation of the peripapillary retina. Fluorescein angiography was consistent with bilateral peripapillary exophytic retinal hemangioblastomas as seen in angiomatosis retinae (von Hippel's disease). Argon laser photocoagulation of the more severely affected left eye was performed with minimal effect upon the tumor.

The vessels proliferating into cornea cause epithelium biotransformation and lipid keratopathy, decreasing corneal transparency. In 9 patients (10 eyes) argon laser obliteration of these vessels was performed. In 8 eyes improvement of corneal transparency and visual acuity was achieved, in other two the neovascularization was restrained. The best results were observed in lipid keratopathy.

A case of tuberculous uveitis that presented 34 years after a primary articular focus is evaluated. The pathogenesis of the infection and the role of the tuberculin skin test in the diagnosis are discussed. Isoniazid was used with good therapeutic results. Fluorescein angiography was found to be essential in the follow-up of the choroidal lesions. Subretinal neovascularization was managed with argon laser photocoagulation.

A technique for controlling intraocular pressure in the immediate postoperative period with Molteno implants is described. Filtration tubes were closed with polypropylene sutures in 13 patients. Filtration tubes closed with 7-0 sutures provided the most satisfactory partial to complete lumen closure. The ligatures in six patients later were opened by argon laser.

We report a case of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum with exudative retinopathy which was treated with the Argon laser and in which the visual acuity was preserved and the subretinal neovascular membrane obliterated for ten months. Laser treatment seems to have helped this case although the same treatment has stimulated the development of subretinal neovascular membranes. These cases must be treated cautiously.

The effect of cyanide on cell viability and mitochondrial function was studied in hepatocytes exposed to air or argon. Cells were more susceptible to cyanide toxicity under air than under argon. A 66-year-old man with mitral stenosis on coumadin presents with hemoptysis caused by a capillary hemangioma of the proximal airways. Argon plasma coagulation was utilized to treat the lesions resulting in resolution of hemoptysis. Tracheobronchial capillary hemangiomas are rare in adults, but are easily discovered and treated with bronchoscopic intervention. This is the report of a welder who performed argon-shielded electric arc welding in an atmosphere containing trichloroethylene. He developed immediate respiratory symptoms, pulmonary edema 12 hours after exposure, and recurring dyspnea ten days after exposure. These pulmonary reactions might be explained by inhalation of decomposition products of trichloroethylene such as dichloroacetyl chloride and phosgene.

The Nd:YAG laser was used to treat a patient bleeding from the rectosigmoid as a result of radiation injury related to therapy for cervical carcinoma. Successful laser therapy was performed after a diverting colostomy failed to control persistent bleeding. Further surgical procedures were not required. Characteristics of Nd:YAG laser as compared with those of the carbon dioxide and argon lasers are considered.
