Comorbid attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and substance use disorder: treatment considerations.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is predominantly a diagnosis of childhood and adolescence but has also been recognized in adults. It is associated with high rates of comorbid psychiatric conditions, particularly substance use disorders (SUD). METHODS: A review of the literature was conducted with a focus on ADHD, SUD, their comorbidity, and treatment considerations. RESULTS: Literature suggests that the use of methylphenidate (MPH) in children does not increase SUD later in life, and may in fact reduce substance use and abuse in adolescence and adulthood. Concurre

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, reading disability, and personality disorders in a prison population.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has long been recognized in children, and for many the disorder persists into adulthood. There is a growing concern that the adults with ADHD who have the least favorable outcome, are among those who end up in prison. The aim of this study was to assess childhood ADHD and its persistence into adulthood among a representative sample of Norwegian prison inmates, as well as personality disorders and reading difficulties, which in previous studies have been linked to ADHD. The results indicate that persistent ADHD is very common among prison inmates.

Prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder among substance abusers.

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study sought to determine the prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder among adults admitted to 2 chemical dependency treatment centers. It was hypothesized that ADHD alone or in combination with conduct disorder would be overrepresented in a population of patients with psychoactive substance use disorders. METHOD: Two hundred one participants were selected randomly from 2 chemical dependency treatment centers. Standardized clinical interviews were conducted using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, the Addic

Diagnostic efficiency of symptoms for oppositional defiant disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We examined the diagnostic efficiency of symptoms for experimentally diagnosed oppositional defiant disorder (OD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and for their differential diagnosis, in a nonreferred sample. More specifically, we used four conditional probability indices--positive predictive power, negative predictive power, sensitivity, and specificity--in an attempt to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of these symptoms. Teacher ratings of OD and ADHD symptoms were gathered on 102 boys, ages 8 to 12. On average, ADHD symptoms were as useful as OD symptoms as exclusion

Effect of intelligence quotient discrepancy on attention and executive function in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: an fNIRS study.

Intelligence quotient discrepancy (IQD) is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, but its impact on attention and executive function (EF) deficits in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is unknown. This study aimed to examine the effect of IQD by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The current study included 114 children with ADHD and a full-scale IQ ≥ 70, encompassing verbal IQ (VIQ) and performance IQ (PIQ). Participants were divided based on IQ discrepancies into the NON-IQD (n = 60, |PIQ-VIQ| < 1 standard deviation) and IQD (n = 54, PIQ-VIQ > 1 st

Computerised Attention Functions Training Versus Computerised Executive Functions Training for Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

Background: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by deficits in attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Current treatments, such as stimulant medication and behavioural therapy, ameliorate symptoms but do not address the core cognitive dysfunctions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two computerised neurocognitive training programs, attention functions training and executive functions training, in children with ADHD. Methods: Eighty children with ADHD (ages 8-13) were randomly assigned to one of three groups: A

Alterations in Corneal Morphology and Thickness Associated with Methylphenidate Treatment in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Although methylphenidate is a first-line pharmacological agent in the treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), its long-term effects on ocular tissues, particularly the corneal endothelium, remain poorly understood. Given the cornea's metabolic sensitivity, subclinical changes may occur even in the absence of overt ophthalmologic symptoms. This study aims to evaluate the impact of six-month methylphenidate treatment on corneal endothelial morphology and intraocular pressure (IOP) in pediatric patients with ADHD. Methods: This prospective observationa

Association of Stimulant Medication Use With Bone Mass in Children and Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Murine studies reveal that sympathetic nervous system activation leads to decreased bone mass. Stimulant medications used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) increase sympathetic tone and may affect bone remodeling. Because bone mass accrual is completed by young adulthood, assessing stimulant effects on bone density in growing children is of critical importance. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between stimulant use and bone mass in children and adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional analysis used data collected from Janua

Addiction severity pattern associated with adult and childhood Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients with addictions.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is highly prevalent among adults with addictive disorders, but little is known about addiction patterns associated with ADHD diagnosis. This study examined addiction severity in patients with co-occurring addictive disorders and ADHD controlling for the potential influence of associated psychiatric comorbidity. Data were collected in French outpatient addiction treatment centers. A total of 217 patients seeking treatment for substance or gambling addiction were included. At treatment entry, participants were interviewed with the Addiction Severit

Corpus callosum segment circumference is associated with response control in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Response control is impaired in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Given the corpus callosum's role in response control, we compared callosal morphology in 64 children with ADHD and 64 typically developing children, aged 7 to 13 years, and investigated the relationships between callosal morphology and response control. Area and circumference of 5 callosal segments (genu, rostral body, midbody, isthmus, and splenium) were normalized for cerebral volume and examined for correlation with mean reaction time, intrasubject variability, and/or commission error rate from a go/no-go task.

Event-related potentials in adolescents with schizophrenia and their siblings: a comparison with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Identifying trait markers specific to schizophrenia might uncover mechanisms underlying illness susceptibility. Previous research shows the N2 and P3 event-related potentials are abnormal in schizophrenia; specificity of these potential trait markers has not been well established. METHODS: Electroencephalogram data were recorded from four adolescent groups: early-onset schizophrenia patients (SZ; n = 30); non-psychotic siblings of schizophrenia patients (SZ-SIB; n = 36); healthy control subjects (HC; n = 36); a neurodevelopmental attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) com

Information processing deficits in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, inattentive type, and children with reading disability.

We examined the information processing capabilities of children diagnosed with the inattentive subtype of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who had been characterized as having a sluggish cognitive tempo. Children referred for school-related problems (n = 81) and nonreferred community controls (n = 149) participated. Of the referred children, 24 met criteria for ADHD, 42 met criteria for reading disability (RD), and 9 of these were comorbid for RD and ADHD. Children with ADHD differed from those without ADHD on a visual search task but not on an auditory processing task; the reve
