Age-dependent effect of pituitary transplants on immune responses in rat submaxillary lymph nodes: modulatory effect of the autonomic nervous system.

An anterior pituitary was grafted into the breast muscles of male rats on day 5, or under the kidney capsule on day 30 or 60 of life. At the 70th day of life (rats operated at the 5th or 30th day) or at the 100th day of life (rats operated at the 60th day), rats were injected subcutaneously with Freund's complete adjuvant, being killed 2 days later. Rats pituitary-grafted at the 30th day showed a greater hyperprolactinemia than rats grafted at the 5th or 60th day. Submaxillary lymph node natural killer (NK) activity decreased in neonatally pituitary-grafted rats and increased in rats grafted a

The role of the sympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system on pain before and after third molar extraction- an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing heart rate variability (HRV) before a standardized surgery would help to explore further the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and pain. METHODS: A single-center prospective cohort of 117 patients (55% female) scheduled for third molar extraction underwent a preoperative resting measurement of arterial pressure followed by an HRV recording, then potentiated by a Valsalva maneuver and a deep breathing challenge. Finally, pain sensitivity was assessed by hand immersion in hot water. All surgeries were conducted under local anesthesia, with or without sedati…

Mental health consequences of early life stress in children - The autonomic nervous system as a potential target for early detection and intervention?

Early life stress affects children worldwide, influencing behavioural, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. It is strongl … tal stress and its associated emotional and physiological responses may be at a heightened risk for autonomic nervous system (ANS) developmental disruptions. Disruptions in the ANS regulation are linked to metabolic risk, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and early mortality, as well as mental illness. Autonomic imbalance, characterised by sympathetic over …

"Denervation" of autonomous nervous system in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension by low-dose radiation: a case report with an unexpected outcome.

Vasointestinal peptide metabolism plays a key physiological role in multimodular levels of vasodilatory, smooth muscle cell proliferative, parenchymal, and inflammatory lung reactions. In animal studies, vasointestinal peptide relaxes isolated pulmonary arterial segments from several mammalian species in vitro and neutralizes the pulmonary vasoconstrictor effect of endothelin. In some animal models, it reduces pulmonary vascular resistance in vivo and in monocrotaline-induced pulmonary hypertension. A 58-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and mild edema of the lower extremities. A bronchosc

[The effect of the vibration and noise factor on the physical work capacity and autonomic nervous system function of workers in vibration-hazardous jobs].

An unexampled study was made of the peripheral vegetative incompetence syndrome developing in vibration disease. It is shown that chronic occupational exposure to vibration and noise results in damage to the segmentary apparatus of the vegetative nervous system. Vegetative inadequacies are manifested by impairement of cardiovascular functions. With exposure to vibration and noise, it is the sympathetic portion of the vegetative nervous system that is first affected. The service duration-related progression of the pathological process results in increase of the share of parasympathetic patholog

Investigating the effect of mindfulness training for stress management in military training: the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and emotional regulation.

BACKGROUND: Military personnel face an increased risk of developing mental disorders owing to the stressful environments they encounter. Effective stress management strategies are crucial to mitigate this risk. Mindfulness training (MT) is promising as a stress management approach in such demanding settings. This study uses a quantitative approach to investigate the impact of MT on the relationship between the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and emotional regulation. METHODS: The study evaluated the effectiveness of MT in reducing stress among 86 military personnel. Participants were divided i…

Using the Hilbert Transform to Evaluate the Effects of Functional Foods on Autonomic Nervous System Activity: A Comparison with the Fast Fourier Transform.

Evaluating the autonomic nervous system (ANS) via heart rate variability (HRV) to investigate the effects of food on human health has attracted attention. However, using a conventional HRV analysis via the fast Fourier transform (FFT), it is difficult to remove artifacts such as body movements and/or abnormal physiological responses (unexpected events) from the HRV analysis results. In this study, an analysis combining bandpass filters and the Hilbert transform was applied to HRV data on functional food intake to compare with FFT analysis. HRV data were obtained from six males by recording ele…

Generation of Gut Motor Patterns Through Interactions Between Interstitial Cells of Cajal and the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Autonomic Nervous Systems.

The musculature of the gastrointestinal tract is a vast network of collaborating excitable cell types. Embedded throughout are the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) intertwined with enteric nerves. ICC sense external stimuli such as distention, mediate nerve impulses to smooth muscle cells, and provide rhythmic excitation of the musculature. Neural circuitry involving both the intrinsic and extrinsic autonomic nervous systems, in collaboration with the ICC, orchestrate an array of motor patterns that serve to provide mixing of content to optimize digestion and absorption, microbiome homeostasi…

[Analysis on the gastrointestinal motility disorder of gastroesophageal reflux disease and the mechanism of acupuncture-moxibustion from the perspective of autonomic nervous system].

From the perspective of autonomic nervous system, this paper analyzes the mechanism, current western medicine treatment methods and acupuncture-moxibustion treatment mechanism of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is believed that the main cause of GERD is that the gastric acid goes to the wrong place due to gastrointestinal motility disorder, which belongs to "acid dislocation". At present, western medical treatment cannot effectively target the pathogenesis of the disease, and its effect is limited. Acupuncture-moxibustion could regulate the neuroendocrine immune network to regulate …

The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System on Cardiac Rhythm during the Evolution of Diabetes Mellitus Using Heart Rate Variability as a Biomarker.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is highly influenced by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). Several illnesses have been associated with changes in the ANS, thus altering the pattern of HRV. However, the variability of the heart rhythm is originated within the Sinus Atrial Node (SAN) which has its own variability. Still, although both oscillators produce HRV, the influence of the SAN on HRV has not yet been exhaustively studied. On the other hand, the complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), for instance, nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy, increase cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Tr…

The Effects of Feeding on Cardiac Control of the Broad-Nosed Caiman (Caiman latirostris): The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System and NANC Factors.

The metabolic increment that occurs after feeding demands cardiovascular adjustments to be maintained, as increased heart rate (fH ) and cardiac output. In mammals, postprandial tachycardia seems to be triggered by an increase in adrenergic activity and by nonadrenergic noncholinergic (NANC) factors, while in ectothermic vertebrates, this adjustment seems to be linked to a withdrawal of vagal drive as well as to NANC factors. Because the factors behind postprandial tachycardia have not yet been investigated in crocodilians, the present study sought to evaluate the postprandial tachycardia medi

Investigation of effects of short-term exposure to 50 HZ magnetic field on central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems in rats.

Although a large number of exposure studies have been carried out to investigate possible detrimental effects of a power-line frequency magnetic field (PF-MF; 50-60 Hz) on living organisms, there is no consensus in reported results. Recent research suggested that short-term exposure to a 50 Hz PF-MF can have a greater effect than long-term exposure. In our study, we aimed to investigate the possible effect of short-term 50 Hz PF-MF exposure on central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems through electroencephalogram (EEG), nerve conduction velocity (NCV), and heart rate variability (HRV)…

The effect of naltrexone and acamprosate on cue-induced craving, autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine reactions to alcohol-related cues in alcoholics.

INTRODUCTION: Acamprosate and naltrexone have been shown to be effective in relapse prevention of alcoholism. It is hypothesized that naltrexone exerts its effects primarily on cue-induced craving and neuroendocrine cue reactivity, whereas acamprosate exerts its effect primarily on autonomic nervous system reactions to alcohol-related cues. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES: In a randomized double-blind experiment, 131 abstinent alcoholics received either acamprosate (n=56), naltrexone (n=52) or placebo (n=23) for three weeks and participated in two cue-exposure sessions: the first the day before and t…

Multimodal sedation guided by processed electroencephalography and autonomic nervous system monitoring for spinal cord stimulator implantation: retrospective identification of anesthetic drug doses.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation is a validated approach for managing chronic pain syndromes. The stimulator placement typically requires sedation, and an awake phase is needed to ensure optimal lead positioning. We describe a novel multimodal sedation approach using target-controlled infusions of propofol, remifentanil, and dexmedetomidine, combined with boluses of ketamine, guided by electroencephalography and nociception-antinociception balance monitoring. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center cohort study reviewed all spinal cord stimulator procedures, including both trials and pe

Association of 24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure During Pregnancy in Adolescents and Young Adults With Measures of Fetal Autonomic Nervous System Development.

The autonomic nervous system regulates physiological processes, including cardiovascular functions. Changes in maternal systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP; DBP), as well as fetal heart rate and heart rate variability, can serve as indicators of possible risk for adverse perinatal and developmental outcomes. This study examined the association between maternal blood pressure during pregnancy and fetal autonomic nervous system heart rate indices. This was a secondary analysis of a pregnant adolescent and young adult cohort with data collected between 2009 and 2012. Ambulatory SBP and DBP…
