Examining worry and secondary stressors on grief severity using machine learning.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Worry and loss-related secondary stressors appear to be important correlates of problematic grief responses. However, the relative importance of these variables in the context of established correlates of grief responding, ranging from indicators of identity disruption and demographic characteristics of the bereaved to characteristics of the loss of quality of the relationship with the deceased, is unknown. Modeling the relative associations of these factors can be problematic, given the high degree of collinearity between these variables. This study used a machine lea

Lactation after infant death: an analysis of Australian healthcare agencies' online health information.

Lactation is a potent signifier of maternal love and care commonly associated with early motherhood and infant survival. It is common, however, for bereaved mothers who have recently undergone miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death to produce breastmilk. Drawing on a critical feminist lens that seeks to understand how maternal subjectivities and lactation norms are constructed through public and reproductive health information, this article tests whether lactation management options after stillbirth and infant death are comprehensively covered in Australia's health organisations' online infor

An investigation of approach behaviour in Prolonged Grief.

Prolonged Grief (PG) is recognized as a potentially debilitating post-bereavement syndrome. Theoretical models of PG highlight the importance of both approach and avoidance behaviours in maintaining the syndrome. Research to date has focussed primarily on investigating avoidance in response to loss reminders. Comparatively few studies have indexed approach behaviours in PG. We use a quasi-experimental paradigm to simultaneously examine approach and avoidance behaviours to reminders of the deceased. Fifty-five bereaved individuals with and without PG responded to stimuli showing the deceased's …

Grief, mourning, and the body: Ritual attention to the death of victims of the dictatorship in Chile.

This study considers the way in which the recovery of the bodies of those who were detained and disappeared under the Pinochet dictatorship not only enables the social recognition of their deaths and the performance of death rituals hitherto obstructed, but also makes it possible to "attend to" their deaths in multiple dimensions. The research draws upon testimonies and records collected during fieldwork for an ongoing anthropological investigation. We observe the different practices that can be associated with the process of "dignification," including the physical demonstrations of affection

Panic-agoraphobic spectrum symptoms in complicated grief.

Little is known about the presence and role of subclinical anxiety symptoms and traits in complicated grief (CG). Data from adults with CG (n=28) suggest that they experience more panic-spectrum symptoms (PSS) than bereaved controls (n=44), and that the presence of greater PSS is independently associated with poorer quality of life.

Validation of a french assessment of prolonged grief (PG-13-R): Age-by-gender differences in prolonged grief symptoms.

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is a persistent form of grief associated with substantial functional impairment. The PG-13-Revised (PG-13-R), aligned with DSM-5-TR criteria, has not been validated in French. This study evaluated its psychometric properties in bereaved adults (N = 1,066; ≥12 months post-loss; 30-day retest n = 270). Following translation, the PG-13-R demonstrated a unidimensional structure, excellent internal consistency (ω=.92), strong test-retest reliability (ρ=.815, p<.001), and expected associations with symptoms of pathological grief (TGI-SR), post-traumatic stress (PCL-5),

"Fighting demons": Stigma and shifting norms in explicit mention of overdose in obituaries, 2010-2019.

Obituaries are often the only published record of an individual's life and elicit community reactions, including stigmatization. Because obituaries are typically written by the bereaved, their content reflects the writer's perceptions of mores governing the social context of the next-of-kin and decedent. When a cause of death is stigmatized, it can influence the way the bereaved write the obituary. However, what constitutes a stigmatized cause of death may change as larger societal discourses of morality shift and conditions or events become framed differently. Using a sample of obituaries (N

Reciprocal Relations of Worry, Rumination, and Psychopathology Symptoms After Loss: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Bereavement can precipitate symptoms of depression, prolonged grief disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Targeting repetitive negative thought (i.e., worry, rumination) in treatment may help reduce post-loss psychopathology. Yet, evidence on longitudinal associations of depressive rumination and worry with post-loss psychopathology symptoms has been mixed and the directions of effects are still unclear. Recently bereaved adults (78% female) completed questionnaires assessing depressive rumination (brooding), worry, and depression, prolonged grief and posttraumatic stress symptoms 11 ti…

Risk of psychiatric disorders among the surviving twins after a co-twin loss.

Losing a co-twin by death is a severely stressful event yet with unknown impact on the surviving twin's risk of psychiatric disorders. We identified all Swedish-born twins who lost a co-twin by death between 1973 and 2013 (n = 4,528), their 4939 non-twin full siblings, together with 22,640 age- and sex-matched non-bereaved twins. Compared to the non-bereaved twins, exposed twins were at increased risk of receiving a first diagnosis of psychiatric disorders (hazard ratio = 1.65, 95% confidence interval1.48-1.83), particularly during the first month after loss. Similarly, compared to non-twin fu

Prolonged grief following the recent death of a daughter among mothers who experienced distal losses during the Khmer Rouge era: Validity of the prolonged grief construct in Cambodia.

This study addressed the validity of the prolonged grief (PG) construct in a Cambodian context. Eighty mothers who lost a young adult daughter stemming from a crowd stampede incident during the annual water festival were interviewed at the six-month post-loss point along with a control group of similarly aged women who were not recently bereaved. Both groups were assessed for PG, PTSD, anxiety, and depression symptoms and well as for the number of distal losses experienced during the Khmer Rouge (KR) regime - knowing that all the women were old enough to have lived through the KR regime. An explanatory model of recovery from disaster loss.

The development and testing of an explanatory model of recovery from disaster loss are described. The sample consisted of 155 persons at Time1-1981, 101 persons at Time2-1983, and represented five magnitudes of disaster loss: bereaved of disaster victims presumed dead; bereaved of disaster victims confirmed dead; persons whose permanent homes were destroyed; persons whose recreational property was destroyed; and a no disaster-loss comparison group. Data tested in the model were collected 1 and 3 years following the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 on eight variables: magnitude of lo

The acceptability of minimally invasive tissue sampling for cause of death determination in rural South Africa: A qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) has been used to determine cause of death in various low- and middle-income countries. However, information on the acceptability of this procedure in community-based deaths is limited; most studies have focused on facility-based deaths among children. This qualitative study describes factors affecting the prospective acceptability of MITS for community deaths across all ages in a rural South African community and reviews the utility of the Theoretical Framework for Acceptability (TFA). METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in the r

Opportunities for Improving End-of-Life Care for Veterans Receiving Hospice in Community Nursing Homes.

OBJECTIVES: The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to ensuring that veterans receive high-quality end-of-life care, including hospice services. Despite its growing use, evidence suggests that the quality of end-of-life care is lower among veterans receiving hospice in VA-contracted community nursing homes (CNHs) compared with VA inpatient settings. The objective of this analysis was to explore the perspectives of bereaved family members of veterans who received CNH-based hospice care to identify opportunities for improvement. DESIGN: Qualitative ana
