beta-Adrenergic effect of antibodies from chagasic patients and normal human lymphocytes on isolated rat atria.

It was previously shown that fresh sera from chagasic patients that contained antibodies reacting with the plasma membrane of striated muscle and endothelial cells (EVI(+) serum) could act in co-operation with complement as a partial beta-agonist increasing the frequency of contraction of isolated rat atria. This activity was absent in EVI(-) chagasic serum or normal human serum and was lost upon heat-inactivation of EVI(+) serum. Also, IgG purified from EVI(+) serum was virtually devoid of activity. In this report we demonstrate that normal human lymphocytes can collaborate with EVI(+) IgG or

Atrial fibrillation and flank pain: Think renal infarction: A case report.

Renal infarction is a rare pathology, threatening the functional prognosis of the kidney. Given the lack of clinical features specific to this pathology, the practitioner may wrongly diagnose pyelonephritis or other causes of abdominal pain. Renal infarction frequently occurs in patients with thromboembolic risk factors, most often secondary to atrial fibrillation. We report the case of a 49-year-old patient, with no previous history, who presented to the emergency room with palpitations and pain in the right flank with an atrial fibrillation rhythm on the ECG, in whom abdominal CT angiography

Differentiating wide complex tachycardias.

Wide complex tachycardias are cardiac rhythm disorders with three or more consecutive beats, rates exceeding 100 beats per minute and a QRS duration of 120 msec (0.12 second) or greater. The width of the QRS complex should be verified in a number of leads, since the QRS complex often appears mistakenly narrower (i.e., a QRS duration of less than 120 msec) in one or two of the 12 leads. Most wide complex tachycardias are ventricular tachycardia, and they are managed with antiarrhythmic drugs and correction of serum potassium and magnesium levels. Electrical cardioversion/defibrillation may be u

Sympathetic control of antral and pyloric electrical activity in the rabbit.

The effects of section and stimulation of the sympathetic nerve trunk on gastric motility were investigated in conscious and decorticate rabbits. In conscious animals after section of the abdominal splanchnic nerve, rhythm of antral and pyloric bursts was enhanced, becoming more regular, and the period of arrest of the rhythmic bursts, which was usually observed at the end of inflation of the antrum in intact rabbits, was shortened to 33.6 +/- 4.0 s from 112.2 +/- 14.6 s observed before the sympathetic nerve transection. Adrenergic agonists, phenylephrine (100 micrograms/kg), clonidine (5 micr

Cortical Oscillatory Mechanisms Supporting the Control of Human Social-Emotional Actions.

The human anterior prefrontal cortex (aPFC) is involved in regulating social-emotional behavior, presumably by modulating effective connectivity with downstream parietal, limbic, and motor cortices. Regulating that connectivity might rely on theta-band oscillations (4-8 Hz), a brain rhythm known to create overlapping periods of excitability between distant regions by temporally releasing neurons from inhibition. Here, we used MEG to understand how aPFC theta-band oscillations implement control over prepotent social-emotional behaviors; that is, the control over automatically elicited approach

Explorative investigation on effects of multi-day neurofeedback with implanted electrodes in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Neurofeedback, which consists of recording and visualizing neural activity in real-time, is a method currently being investigated as a supplementary treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). By using implanted deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes with interleaved sensing capability, previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of neurofeedback based on beta oscillations in the basal ganglia. Herein, for the first time, we explored short-term neurofeedback ability over the course of multiple sessions with a fully implanted DBS system. Eight patients with PD participated in the study. Neurof

Cerebellar magnetic stimulation increased beta power and phase synchronisation in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

OBJECTIVE: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is the most common autosomal dominant ataxia, with no cure currently available. Although repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the cerebellum improves ataxia severity, its efficacy in SCA3 remains suboptimal. This study aimed to investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying cerebellar rTMS in SCA3 using resting-state Electroencephalography (EEG). METHODS: We conducted a sham-controlled study in SCA3 patients, recording resting EEG before and after a 3-week course of cerebellar rTMS or sham treatment. EEG power and f

Context-dependent modulations of subthalamo-cortical synchronization during rapid reversals of movement direction in Parkinson's disease.

The role of beta band activity in cortico-basal ganglia interactions during motor control has been studied extensively in resting-state and for simple movements, such as button pressing. However, little is known about how beta oscillations change and interact in more complex situations involving rapid changes of movement in various contexts. To close this knowledge gap, we combined magnetoencephalography (MEG) and local field potential recordings from the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in Parkinson's disease patients to study beta dynamics during initiation, stopping, and rapid reversal of rotation

Beta Power Response After Levodopa Intake in Parkinson's Disease Patients With Chronic Sensing-Enabled Deep Brain Stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: In Parkinson's disease (PD), the power of beta oscillations (± 13-30 hertz [Hz]) from subthalamic nucleus (STN) local field potentials (LFPs) is associated with motor symptoms. Beta power can be used for adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) algorithms based upon symptom fluctuations. The time course of beta power modulations after levodopa intake at home remains to be described. METHODS: Ten-minute averages of beta peak power were recorded in 33 patients with PD treated with STN-DBS for a median duration of 134 days during the titration phase. Median beta power after scheduled me

Altered cortical network dynamics during observing and preparing action in patients with corticobasal syndrome.

Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is characterized not only by parkinsonism but also by higher-order cortical dysfunctions, such as apraxia. However, the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying these symptoms remain poorly understood. To explore the pathophysiology of CBS, we recorded magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data from 17 CBS patients and 20 age-matched controls during an observe-to-imitate task. This task involved observing a tool-use video (action observation), withholding movement upon a Go cue (movement preparation), and subsequently imitating the tool-use action. We analyzed spectral po

[Clinical and neurophysiological study of the efficacy of adaptol in the treatment of emotional burn-out].

The study aimed at therapeutic effect of adaptol on burn-out syndrome. Authors examined 32 patients aged from 25 to 45 years. Adaptol was prescribed in day dose 1500 mg during 60 days. Clinical, psychological and electroencephalographic study (EEG) was conducted before and after the treatment course. The data of adaptol positive influence on the basic clinical symptoms (reduction of asthenic and anxiety scores) is obtained. The analysis of EEG results allows to draw conclusions on normalisation of brain functional activity after therapy.

[Diurnal fluctuations of protein contents and the pH dependence of beta2-microglobulin stability in urine].

Diurnal fluctuations of protein excretion into urine and the effect of urinary pH on the urinary protein concentrations were studied in patients with various kidney diseases. The diurnal kinetics of gamma-immunoglobulin, transferrin, albumin, alpha1-microglobulin, gamma-immunoglobulin light chains, and the retinol-binding protein proved to positively correlate with the diurnal fluctuations of proteinuria and to negatively correlate with urinary pH. Diurnal changes in urinary beta2-microglobulin content did not correlate with those of any other protein. Oral bicarbonate intake alkalinized the u

Gender differences influence brain's beta oscillatory responses in recognition of facial expressions.

There are only few studies describing gender differences in recognition of facial expressions. Our study has the aim to analyze the effect of gender differences in oscillatory brain responses. Three sets of Ekman and Friesens's facial expressions (neutral, angry, and happy) were presented to 26 healthy subjects (13 men) while recording from 13 different scalp locations. Occipital beta response (15-24Hz) was significantly larger for women than for men during the presentation of face expressions. Our results demonstrate that processing of emotional face expressions clearly differs between men an

Cortical activity associated with auditory hallucinations.

Auditory hallucinations are one the most enigmatic and hampering symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Non-invasive functional imaging techniques have begun to delineate the underlying neuronal basis. We investigated the spontaneous magnetoencephalographic activity in a 33-year-old male schizophrenic patient and compared the results to those obtained from 13 healthy controls. Despite current neuroleptic medication (clozapine) the patient was still suffering from auditory hallucinations. Using the dipole density method, we were able to demonstrate an increase of fast MEG activity (12.5-30 Hz)

Pharmacotherapy of dilated cardiomyopathy.

The pharmacological treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy overlaps with the treatment of heart failure. The primary objective of this treatment is to slow the progression of disease and improve quality and length of life. All patients, including those with asymptomatic dysfunction of the left ventricle, ought to receive angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, (in the case of intolerance, angiotensin receptor blockers), and beta blockers. The results of studies involving aliskiren have been, so far, disappointing. In symptomatic heart failure NYHA II-IV diuretics and mineralcorticoid receptor a

Movement-related electroencephalographic reactivity in Alzheimer disease.

Event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) of alpha and beta electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms was investigated in normal subjects and mild Alzheimer Disease patients (AD), performing unilateral right finger movements (about 10 s intermovement interval). Electroencephalographic data were sampled based on 10-20 system electrode montage. Surface Laplacian estimate of the potential reduced the head-volume conductor effects and annulled electrode reference variations. Results showed that EEG reactivity (i.e., ERD/ERS) of modeled contralateral rolandic cortex and motor performanc

A 26-year-old patient with an irrelevant personal and family-history was treated on account of attacks of relapsing ventricular tachycardia and cardiac failure, mostly dextrolateral. After ruling out other possible causes of the disease--such as embolism of the lungs, ischaemic heart disease, out other possible causes of the disease--such as embolism of the lungs, ischaemic heart disease, Ebstein's anomaly, the diagnosis of an arrhythmogenic right ventricle was established. This disease is suggested by negative T waves in the thoracic leads V1-V3 during sinus rhythm and by the shape of the QRS

[Sick sinus syndrome caused by amyloidosis associated with multiple myeloma].

A 65-year-old man, who had been treated for multiple myeloma (MM) since 1986, was admitted because of loss of consciousness in September 1989. An electrocardiogram taken just before admission showed a sinus arrest, junctional escaped rhythm, and marked bradycardia. The diagnosis of sick sinus syndrome (SSS) was made. Soon a temporary pacemaker was inserted, and the dyspnea ameliorated. However on the second day in the hospital, he had a high fever and Staphylococcus aureus was detected in the cultured blood. A diagnosis of septicemia was made, and the pacemaker was removed. He was then treated

Sodium valproate in the treatment of intractable seizure disorders: a clinical and electroencephalographic study.

A 12-week study of clinical response, EEG changes and serum antiepileptic drug (AED) levels using sodium valproate (VAL) was undertaken. The study showed that VAL is a powerful adjunct in the treatment of intractable epilepsy. It was most effective in patients with generalized seizures, but no seizure type was totally resistant. No serious adverse effects were encountered; nausea was easily overcome by readjusting the drug dosage. In most cases the only EEG change was decrease of epileptiform activity, and this correlated well with decreased frequency of clinical seizures. These two features i
