Vestibular rehabilitation with biofeedback in patients with central imbalance.

UNLABELLED: Central Nervous System disorders may cause important functional unbalance in the maintenance of balance and posture. There is no effective rehabilitation for these symptoms until now. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the use of tongue electrotactile stimulation on patients with central imbalance using BrainPort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective case series study. We evaluated 8 patients with central imbalance, 6 men and 2 women, with mean age of 67.75 years. The patients were submitted to Computed Dynamic Posturography (CDP) and then received 18 session

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome: physiology and treatment options.

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is a rare condition that can lead to pain, rectal bleeding and mucus. It is associated with chronic straining and abnormal defaecatory behaviour, including digitating and several unsuccessful visits to the toilet daily. Other symptoms can include tenesmus, altered bowel habit and incontinence. It can also be accompanied with a rectal prolapse, which may involve protrusion of either the rectal mucosa or the entire wall of the rectum. SRUS is known for its chronicity and can be difficult to treat. This article reviews SRUS, discussing possible causes and the

A preliminary study of modification of gait in real-time using surface electromyography.

Modification of abnormal gait was attempted in real-time using a surface electromyography-based protocol to teach recruitment of the anterior tibialis at the correct time in the gait cycle. Two children diagnosed with cerebral palsy were able to learn volitional control of the anterior tibialis as demonstrated by improved clearance of the toe on the swing phase of the gait and newly learned ability to recruit and relax the anterior tibialis. The children were able to walk with the new gait pattern and reproduce the old one at will. Implications for future research in this area are discussed.

Fecal incontinence in elderly patients: common, treatable, yet often undiagnosed.

It is important for primary care physicians to take fecal incontinence seriously and not dismiss it as a normal part of aging. Elderly patients may be reluctant to admit fecal incontinence, so clinicians need to ask about it. Two of the most common causes are fecal impaction (especially in nursing home patients) and rectosphincter dysfunction in people with diabetes.

Electropalatography treatment in an adult with late repair of cleft palate.

This paper describes the use of electropalatography (EPG) in the treatment of a speech disorder in a Cantonese-speaking woman who had primary repair of the palate at age 13. A multiple-baseline approach was used to document treatment efficacy using electropalatography. The client showed rapid improvement in articulatory placement, with generalization to nontarget phonemes. In addition, improvement was noted in her manner of articulation, with a reduction of nasal emission. The relationship between articulatory placement errors and nasal emission in late repair cleft is discussed. Explanations

Solitary rectal ulcer: the place of biofeedback and surgery in the treatment of the syndrome.

Thirty-one patients with the solitary rectal ulcer syndrome were studied, the majority of whom presented with fresh blood per rectum and a rectal ulcer, mucorrhoea, or a varying degree of rectal prolapse. Fourteen patients were treated conservatively or with surgery and had a high rate of recurrence of the solitary rectal ulcer syndrome. Seventeen patients were treated with biofeedback for the associated obstructed defecation (anismus) either before or immediately after surgery with a lower recurrence rate. The final symptomatic cure rate was similar in both groups but 15 episodes of recurrenc

Nonpharmacologic treatment of urinary incontinence.

Standard therapy for urinary incontinence often includes pharmaceutical agents that carry a risk of side effects or interactions with other drugs. As an alternative, several nonpharmacologic management approaches are available. Scheduled voiding regimens are effective for patients who have uninhibited detrusor contractions, even when cognitive impairment is present. In motivated patients, pelvic muscle exercise is effective for stress incontinence. These methods are safe and inexpensive, and studies indicate that they can be as effective as or more effective than pharmaceutical agents. Other n

[Effect of adaptive biofeedback on the severity of vestibulo-autonomic symptoms of experimental motion sickness].

The effect of biofeedback control on motion sickness symptoms was investigated in 27 test subjects with different susceptibility who had been trained to regulate their skin resistance and skin temperature. The efficacy of two schemes was compared: scheme 1 - transfer of controlling abilities, and scheme 2 - application of biofeedback during vestibular stimulation. Use of either scheme inhibited significantly the severity of motion sickness symptoms in moderate susceptibility individuals; in other words, this decreased respiratory arrhythmia, skin galvanic response, heart rate and objective mot

Long-term efficacy of EMG biofeedback for chronic rheumatic back pain.

Short-term effects of EMG biofeedback for chronic rheumatic back pain have been documented, however, the long-term efficacy of this treatment modality has not yet been established. Twenty-two patients of an original sample of 24 patients who participated in a treatment outcome study [6] were followed up 2.5 years after they had been treated with either EMG biofeedback, pseudotherapy, or conventional medical treatment alone. The results indicate that patients treated with EMG biofeedback maintained beneficial effects and differ significantly from the control groups both on behavioral and cognit

Effectiveness of multiple muscle-site EMG biofeedback and relaxation training in reducing the aversiveness of cancer chemotherapy.

A 44-year-old female cancer patient was given progressive muscle relaxation training and multiple muscle-site EMG biofeedback to reduce the conditioned negative responses she had apparently developed to her chemotherapy treatments. Following three baseline chemotherapy sessions, the patient was given relaxation training and biofeedback during four consecutive chemotherapy treatments and was asked to practice her relaxation skills daily in the hospital or at home. After the patient felt able to relax on her own, relaxation training and biofeedback were terminated and three follow-up sessions we

Acoustic spectral feedback in vocal learning: a systematic review of psychological mechanisms and skill outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Vocal skill acquisition is inherently "invisible": learners cannot directly observe the movements of their vocal organs, so traditional instruction depends heavily on the teacher's auditory judgment and metaphorical language. This leaves learners ill-equipped to detect errors and self-correct during independent practice. Spectral and acoustic visualization technologies-pitch-trajectory displays, spectrograms, formant analysis, and physiological biofeedback-can externalize this hidden process, yet systematic synthesis at the level of psychological mechanisms remains scarce. Defensive freezing and its relation to approach-avoidance decision-making under threat.

Successful responding to acutely threatening situations requires adequate approach-avoidance decisions. However, it is unclear how threat-induced states-like freezing-related bradycardia-impact the weighing of the potential outcomes of such value-based decisions. Insight into the underlying computations is essential, not only to improve our models of decision-making but also to improve interventions for maladaptive decisions, for instance in anxiety patients and first-responders who frequently have to make decisions under acute threat. Forty-two participants made passive and active approach-av

Risperidone-Induced Urinary Incontinence in Schizoaffective Disorder: A Case Report.

Risperidone is a widely used atypical antipsychotic known for its efficacy in managing various psychiatric conditions. However, it is not without adverse effects, and one such underreported side effect is that of urinary incontinence. This case report highlights the experience of a 59-year-old gentleman with a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder who, after being admitted due to a relapse of his symptoms, developed urinary incontinence with risperidone. The patient's symptoms resolved upon the gradual reduction of the risperidone dose to 2 mg at bedtime. Urinary incontinence as a side effect

Post-Traumatic Headache: A Review of Prevalence, Clinical Features, Risk Factors, and Treatment Strategies.

Post-traumatic headache (PTH) is a common and debilitating consequence of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) that can occur over one year after the head impact event. Thus, better understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and risk factors could facilitate early identification and management of PTH. There are several factors that could influence the reporting of PTH prevalence, including the definition of concussion and PTH. The main risk factors for PTHs include a history of migraines or headaches, female gender, younger age, greater severity of the head injury, and co-occurring psycholo

Clinical Prediction of Posttreatment Migraine Recurrence Using Biofeedback Data: A Machine Learning Framework for Enhanced Patient Stratification and Treatment Monitoring.

Migraine is a complex neurological disorder with significant implications for individual well-being and public health. Predicting migraine occurrences after treatment is crucial for evaluating therapeutic efficacy and enabling personalized care, yet remains largely underexplored. This study proposes a robust machine learning framework to predict posttreatment migraine headache occurrences using real-world headache log data collected from 133 patients undergoing biofeedback therapy. The methodology includes rigorous data preprocessing, outlier removal via the interquartile range (IQR) method, a

Biofeedback vs Respiratory Retraining for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO) presents as episodic shortness of breath that can range in severity and may greatly impact daily life. Respiratory retraining therapy (RRT) provided by speech-language pathologists is the standard of care. Limited data exist on treatment effectiveness, with no published randomized clinical trials comparing treatments. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of video biofeedback (directly showing participants their laryngeal anatomy as they perform breathing exercises) compared with RRT in the treatment of episodic, inhalational dyspnea attrib

Toward more intuitive prosthetic control: structured residual muscle training in transtibial amputees.

BACKGROUND: Myoelectric control of lower-limb prostheses is challenging due to residual muscle co-contraction, inconsistent activation, and signal variability. Evidence regarding the efficacy of training interventions targeting residual muscle activation in transtibial amputees (TTAs) to enhance prosthetic control remains limited. This study investigated whether a 4-week structured training could improve residual muscle control in TTAs. METHODS: Nine male unilateral TTAs were assigned to either (A) biofeedback training with daily home exercises or (B) home exercises alone. Biofeedback sessions
