Navigating the Mpox Outbreak: Insights on Vaccination Decisions and Psychosocial Impacts Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in Los Angeles.

The 2022 mpox outbreak significantly impacted gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the U.S., with Los Angeles representing nearly 40% of California cases. Limited data exist on how MSM living with and without HIV navigated the outbreak and their decision-making regarding vaccination. Between November 2023 and March 2024, we conducted a mixed-methods study with 21 cisgender MSM in Los Angeles who completed a semi-structured interview and quantitative survey. Recruitment prioritized diversity in mpox vaccination history, HIV status, race, and ethnicity. Interviews were rec

Experiences of mpox illness and case management among cis and trans gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in England: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The 2022-2024 global mpox outbreak, occurring primarily in the sexual networks of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), has not been accompanied by a focus on patient perspectives of illness. We explore the experiences of GBMSM diagnosed with mpox in England to understand needs for social and clinical support. METHODS: In-depth interviews (March/July 2023) were conducted with 22 GBMSM diagnosed with mpox in 2022, randomly selected from a national mpox surveillance database, and 4 stakeholders from clinical/community-based organisations. Interviews covered expe

Perceived Versus Actual Costs of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) account for the highest proportion of HIV diagnoses in the United States, with daily pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) significantly reducing transmission risk. Since 2021, the Affordable Care Act rules have required PrEP and accompanying care visits to be free for most Americans; nevertheless, insurers have found ways to circumvent no-cost PrEP and some employers are receiving exemptions from including it in their formularies. Despite this, perceived costs and indirect expenses still hinder PrEP adoption. This study examines the differe

Does use of anal cytology as a triage test improve the performance of high-risk human papillomavirus screening in gay and bisexual men for anal cancer prevention?

Anal high-risk human papillomavirus (HRHPV) testing-based anal cancer screening gay and bisexual men (GBM) is associated with high sensitivity, but low specificity. We report the potential role of triage use of anal cytology with HRHPV testing in detecting 12-month persistent anal high-grade squamous epithelial lesions (HSIL) in a cohort of GBM in Sydney, Australia. Participants were GBM from the Study of the Prevention of Anal Cancer (SPANC) who underwent annual anal HPV testing, cytology, and high-resolution anoscopy (HRA)-guided histology. The sensitivity and specificity of five screening a

Strong community belonging moderates poor mental health in lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals living in Canada: an intersectional analysis of a national population-based survey.

OBJECTIVES: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals report worse mental health than heterosexuals; however, this disparity may vary across intersecting social locations and be moderated by community belonging. METHODS: We investigated these relationships using the Canadian Community Health Survey 2015-2016. Log-binomial regression models were used to estimate associations between self-rated mental health and social locations (sexual orientation, gender, race, immigration, education, income), community belonging, and interactions between explanatory variables. RESULTS: Poor mental health

Targeted Violence as a Risk Factor for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Cisgender Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who have Sex with Men in the United States.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the United States (US) are disproportionately exposed to interpersonal violence, which carries a high conditional risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and which is often motivated by sexual prejudice. We determined PTSD prevalence by violence attribution (motivated by sexual prejudice or not) and measured PTSD-attribution associations. Using a 2020 nationwide cross-sectional survey of 2,886 GBMSM who reported ever experiencing interpersonal violence, we performed multivariable modified Poisson regressions with ro

Familiarity with, perceived accuracy of, and willingness to rely on Undetectable=Untransmittable (U=U) among gay and bisexual men in Australia: results of a national cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The Undetectable=Untransmittable (U=U) message has been promoted since it was demonstrated that viral suppression through HIV treatment prevents sexual transmission between serodiscordant partners (HIV treatment as prevention). Our study assessed familiarity with, perceived accuracy of, and willingness to rely on U=U in a national sample of gay and bisexual men in Australia. METHODS: We conducted a national, online cross-sectional survey in April-June 2021. Eligible participants were gay, bisexual and queer men and non-binary people who lived in Australia. Cost-effectiveness of internet-based HIV screening among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: GetCheckedOnline is an internet-based screening service aiming to increase HIV testing among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). We assessed the cost-effectiveness of GetCheckedOnline in its first implementation phase at different uptake scenarios compared to clinic-based screening services alone in Metro Vancouver, Canada. METHODS: From a healthcare payer's perspective, our cost-utility analysis used an established dynamic GBMSM HIV compartmental model estimating the probability of acquiring HIV, progressing through diagnosis, disease stages and treatment o

Review of human papillomavirus (HPV) burden and HPV vaccination for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and transgender women in the United States.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women, particularly those who are living with HIV, are disproportionately affected by human papillomavirus (HPV). For this narrative review of HPV health outcomes and vaccination for gay, bisexual, and other MSM and transgender women in the United States, we highlighted 71 publications regarding 1) burden of HPV infections and related diseases; 2) HPV vaccine efficacy; 3) HPV vaccination recommendations; 4) HPV vaccination coverage; 5) real-world vaccine effectiveness and health impacts; and 6) HPV vaccination acceptabili

Combination HIV Prevention Strategies Among Montreal Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in the PrEP Era: A Latent Class Analysis.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) became publicly available in Quebec for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in 2013. We used baseline data from Engage, a cohort of GBM recruited by respondent-driven sampling, to examine patterns of combination HIV prevention use among Montreal GBM since PrEP became available. Latent class analysis, stratified by HIV status, was used to categorize GBM by self-reported use of biomedical and behavioural prevention strategies. Correlates of resulting classes were identified using multinomial logistic regression. Among HIV-negative/unknown GBM (

Perceived Interruptions to HIV Prevention and Treatment Services Associated With COVID-19 for Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in 20 Countries.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus pandemic has necessitated a range of population-based measures to stem the spread of infection. These measures may be associated with disruptions to other health services including for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) at risk for or living with HIV. Here, we assess the relationship between stringency of COVID-19 control measures and interruptions to HIV prevention and treatment services for MSM. SETTING: Data for this study were collected between April 16, 2020, and May 24, 2020, as part of a COVID-19 Disparities Survey implemented by the ga

HCV knowledge, disclosure practices, and risk perceptions among gay and bisexual men who do and do not engage in group sex while using drugs.

ABSTRACT Research suggests that hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission is more likely among gay and bisexual men (GBM) who engage in sexually adventurous practices, including group sex while using drugs. The current study explored drug use, sexual practices, HCV knowledge, HCV disclosure, and beliefs about HCV transmission among GBM (n = 193) reporting group sex after/while using drugs compared to those who did not. Survey findings indicate that men who participated in group sex while using drugs were more likely to have engaged in other sexually adventurous practices, ever injected drugs, have

Housing Instability, Depression, and HIV Viral Load Among Young Black Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Atlanta, Georgia.

Housing instability is common among sexual minority youth. Research suggests that psychological distress, such as depression, may mediate the association between housing instability and poor HIV-related outcomes, but this hypothesis remains underexplored. Housing instability was assessed using two variables (residential moves in 6 months, and self-reported homelessness at any time since age 15 years). We examined cross-sectional relationships between the housing instability variables and detectable HIV-1 viral load (VL) in a sample of young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with

Knowledge, interest, and anticipated barriers of pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake and adherence among gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men who are incarcerated.

Criminal justice (CJ) settings disproportionately include populations at high risk for acquiring HIV, and CJ-involved individuals are often at the intersection of multiple overlapping risk factors. However, few studies have examined attitudes about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among incarcerated men who have sex with men (MSM). This study explored interest in, knowledge of, and barriers to PrEP uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections. Using semi-structured interviews, 26 MSM were interviewed about PrEP knowledge, interest
