Determination of bisphenol a in doogh (a yogurt-based Iranian drink) by magnetic-SPE (MWCNT-Fe3O4)/GC-MS method and human health risk assessment.

Doogh is a traditional Iranian yogurt-based drink that is served flavored or unflavored and carbonated or non-carbonated. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disrupting analyte, which poses significant dangers to public health. The goal of our investigation was to assess the BPA content in doogh samples from Tehran along with risk assessment by using the Monte Carlo method. A nano-adsorbent of magnetized iron-based multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-Fe3O4) was used with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to evaluate the mentioned contaminant. The average amount of BPA in doogh sample

Effect of maternal bisphenol exposure on adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes: The Japan Environment and Children's study.

Maternal exposure to bisphenols, including bisphenol A (BPA), reportedly results in adverse pregnancy and offspring health outcomes. However, large birth cohort studies on the risk of BPA exposure during pregnancy remain limited. Here, we examined bisphenols' effects on adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes using data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort study. We selected 4523 women with pregnancies resulting in singleton live births. First-trimester urine concentrations of bisphenols A, F, S, and AF were determined via high-performance liquid chromatog

Pineal melatonin improves bisphenol A-induced enterotoxicity via tryptophan/AhR/mitochondria signaling in pregnant mice.

Bisphenol A (BPA), recognized as an endocrine disruptor, is widely utilized in the manufacturing of various household products. Research has demonstrated that maternal exposure to BPA during pregnancy is associated with intestinal disorders and can adversely affect offspring. Furthermore, previous studies have identified that melatonin (MT), secreted by the pineal gland, plays a crucial role in maintaining intestinal health and exhibits detoxification properties. Therefore, this study investigates the therapeutic effects of MT on BPA-induced intestinal damage in pregnant mice. The findings ind

Advanced metabolomics-based approach to reveal new insights into Bisphenol A metabolism and its presence in human excreta and water bodies in Taiwan.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental contaminant and can be detected in foodstuffs. Hence, investigating BPA metabolism in humans is crucial because certain BPA metabolites may exhibit similar or even greater be toxicity than does the parent compound. In this study, we used an advanced metabolomics-based data processing approach along with ultraperformance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) to identify BPA metabolites in human liver enzyme incubation samples, and those metabolites were further detected in human excreta and water body samples in Taiwan. The first stage involved

Electron cycling mechanism in Fe/Mn DSAzyme accelerates BPA degradation and nanoenzyme regeneration.

Peroxidase-like (POD-like) as a kind of new Fenton-like catalyst can effectively activate H2O2 to degrade organic pollutants in water, but improving the catalytic activity and stability of POD-like remains a challenging task. Here, we synthesized a novel dual single-atom nanoenzyme (DSAzyme) FeMn/N-CNTs with Fe-N4 and Mn-N4 bimetallic single-atom active centers by mimicking the active centers of natural enzymes and taking advantage of the synergistic effect between the dual metals. FeMn/N-CNTs DSAzyme showed significantly enhanced POD-like activity compared to monometallic-loaded Fe/N-CNTs and

Selenium deficiency exacerbates ROS/ER stress mediated pyroptosis and ferroptosis induced by bisphenol A in chickens thymus.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial pollutant that can cause immune impairment. Selenium acts as an antioxidant, as selenium deficiency often accompanies oxidative stress, resulting in organ damage. This study is the first to demonstrate that BPA and/or selenium deficiency induce pyroptosis and ferroptosis-mediated thymic injury in chicken and chicken lymphoma cell (MDCC-MSB-1) via oxidative stress-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. We established a broiler chicken model of BPA and/or selenium deficiency exposure and collected thymus samples as research subjects after 42 days. The resul

Derivation of water quality criteria for paraquat, bisphenol A and carbamazepine using quantitative structure-activity relationship and species sensitivity distribution (QSAR-SSD).

The risk assessment of an expanding array of emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems and the establishment of water quality criteria rely on species sensitivity distribution (SSD), necessitating ample multi-trophic toxicity data. Computational methods, such as quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), enable the prediction of specific toxicity data, thus mitigating the need for costly experimental testing and exposure risk assessment. In this study, robust QSAR models for four aquatic species (Rana pipiens, Crassostrea virginica, Asellus aquaticus, and Lepomis macrochirus) were

Halogen atoms determine the inhibitory potency of halogenated bisphenol A derivatives on human and rat placental 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2.

Some halogenated bisphenol A (BPA) derivatives (tetrabromobisphenol A, TBBPA, and tetrachlorobisphenol A, TCBPA) are produced in a high volume and exist in PM2.5 after waste burning. 11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 (11β-HSD2) is a critical enzyme for placental function. However, whether halogenated bisphenols inhibit 11β-HSD2 and the mode of action remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate BPA derivatives on human and rat placental 11β-HSD2. The inhibitory strength on human 11β-HSD2 was TBBPA (IC50, 0.665 μM)>TCBPA (2.22 μM)>trichloro BPA (TrCBPA, 19.87 μM)>tetrabromob

Cooperation of multiple active species generated in hydrogen peroxide activation by iron porphyrin for phenolic pollutants degradation.

The narrow acid pH range and the nonselectivity of the dominant •OH limit the Fenton systems to remediate the organic wastewater. Inspired by the role of heme in physiological processes, we employed iron porphyrin as a novel homogeneous catalyst to address this issue. Multiple active species are identified during the activation of H2O2, including high-valent iron porphyrin ((por)Fe(IV)) species ((por)Fe(IV)-OH, (por)+•Fe(IV)=O) and oxygen-centered radicals (•OH, HO2•/•O2-), as well as atomic hydrogen (*H) and carbon-centered radicals. With the cooperation of these active species, the degradati

A study on bisphenol S induced nephrotoxicity and assessment of altered downstream kidney metabolites using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry based metabolomics.

The global use of bisphenol S (BPS) has now been significantly increased for commensurate utilization as a substitute for BPA for its regulatory concerns. Though, previous reports indicated that BPS been also appeared as a toxic congener comparable to BPA. In the present study, we determined nephrotoxicity condition induced due to BPS exposure. Results indicated that BPS significantly promoted histopathological disturbance in the kidney, and altered the levels of biomarkers of kidney damage in serum and urine samples of Wistar rats. It is also indicated that BPS altered the expression of kidne

Simultaneous Quantification of Bisphenol A, Its Glucuronide Metabolite, and Commercial Alternatives by LC-MS/MS for In Vitro Skin Absorption Evaluation.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most used color developer in thermal paper products such as cashiers' receipts, followed by Bisphenol S (BPS), Wincon 8 (D-8), and Pergafast 201 (PF201). These chemicals can migrate from the paper onto the skin and possibly be absorbed and metabolized. Until now, D-8 and PF201 have not been analyzed in biological matrices, nor has a method been developed to simultaneously quantify them, even though they are often found as mixtures. Our aim was to develop and validate a method to quantify BPA, its glucuronide metabolite (BPA-G), BPS, D-8, and PF201 in in vitro skin abso

Adsorption of 17β-estradiol onto humic-mineral complexes and effects of temperature, pH, and bisphenol A on the adsorption process.

The long-term use of animal manure in agriculture has resulted in estrogen pollution, which poses risks to facility vegetable soils. Owing to the complex soil composition, estrogen may exhibit a variety of behaviors at the water/soil interface. This study demonstrated the role of humic acid (HA) on the 17β-estradiol (E2) adsorption by clay minerals (montmorillonite, kaolinite, and hematite). The interfacial behaviors were investigated using adsorption kinetics and isotherms data. Then, the effects of temperature, pH, and bisphenol A (BPA) on the interactions between humic-mineral complexes and

Effects of High-Butterfat Diet on Embryo Implantation in Female Rats Exposed to Bisphenol A.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor associated with poor pregnancy outcomes in human and rodents. The effects of butterfat diets on embryo implantation and whether it modifies BPA's actions are currently unknown. We aimed to determine the effects of butterfat diet on embryo implantation success in female rats exposed to an environmentally relevant dose of BPA. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to dietary butterfat (10% or 39% kcal/kg body weight [BW]) in the presence or absence of BPA (250 μg/kg BW) or ethinylestradiol (0.1 μg/kg BW) shortly before and during pregnancy to assess

Urinary bisphenol A and obesity in U.S. children.

Childhood obesity, a major public health problem, can lead to cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Studies have implicated exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a commonly used chemical, in the development of obesity in adults. However, literature is limited on this association in children. We examined the association between urinary BPA and obesity in children aged 6-18 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2008). The primary exposure was urinary BPA and the outcome was obesity, defined as the ≥ 95th percentile of body mass index specific for age and sex. We found a p

Hepatic DNA methylation modifications in early development of rats resulting from perinatal BPA exposure contribute to insulin resistance in adulthood.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Perinatal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a widely distributed environmental endocrine disruptor, is associated with insulin resistance and diabetes in offspring. The underlying molecular mechanisms could involve epigenetics, as adverse effects induced by environmental exposure in early life are suggested through DNA methylation. In this study we sought to elucidate the relationship between perinatal BPA exposure and alteration of hepatic DNA methylation. METHODS: Pregnant Wistar rats were administered BPA (50 μg/kg/day) or corn oil by oral gavage throughout gestation and lact

Novel pathway for bacterial metabolism of bisphenol A. Rearrangements and stilbene cleavage in bisphenol A metabolism.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is metabolized by a Gram-negative aerobic bacterium via a novel pathway involving oxidative skeletal rearrangement of the BPA. Oxidation of the aliphatic methyl group of BPA leads to coproduction of the methyl-hyroxylated 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-propanol and a skeletally rearranged triol 1,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propanol. The major route of metabolism (> 80%) is through the rearrangement. The 1,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propanol is dehydrated to 4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha-methylstilbene, which is rapidly cleaved by oxidation to 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 4-hydroxyacetophenone. 4

Singlet oxygen generation for selective oxidation of emerging pollutants in a flow-by electrochemical system based on natural air diffusion cathode.

The decay of free radicals involved in side reactions is one of the challenges faced by electrochemical degradation of organic pollutants. To this end, a non-radical oxidation system was constructed by a natural air diffusion cathode (ADC) and a Ti-based dimensional stable anode coated by RuO2 (RuO2-Ti anode) for cathodic hydrogen peroxide activation by anodic chlorine evolution. The ADC fabricated by the carbon black of BP2000 produced a stable concentration of hydrogen peroxide of 339.94 mg L-1 (current efficiency of 73.4%) without aeration, which was superior to the cathode made by the XC72
