Two patients with facial dystonia (blepharospasm and/or oromandibular dystonia) presented with an unusual "trick" movement. Both patients were able to inhibit blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia by vocalizations including singing, reading, and speaking spontaneously. The significance of "trick" movements in facial dystonia is discussed.

The results obtained in a retrospective study on clinical and pharmacological aspects of 41 patients suffering craniocervical dystonia (24 with blepharospasm, 17 with torticollis) and 11 with spasm are here presented. There are many varieties of abnormal facial movement. This paper discusses hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm in particular. A technique found useful for the symptomatic relief of idiopathic hemifacial spasm is described, and experience with its use on 15 patients also described. Experiences in the operative treatment of 6 patients with essential blepharospasm are recounted.

The literature on the use of biofeedback techniques in the treatment of visual and ophthalmologic disorders is reviewed. Although this consists mainly of case studies, there is mounting evidence that biofeedback may be applicable to the treatment of strabismus, nystagmus, blepharospasm, elevated intraocular pressure, and myopia. because of the success in applying biofeedback techniques in the treatment of other neuromuscular disorders, it is concluded that the use of these techniques in the treatment of blepharospasm and strabismus shows the most promise.

We review the existing literature on the involuntary facial movement disorders-benign essential blepharospasm, apraxia of eyelid opening, hemifacial spasm, and aberrant facial nerve regeneration. The etiology of idiopathic blepharospasm, a disorder of the central nervous system, and hemifacial spasm, a condition involving the facial nerve of the peripheral nervous system, is markedly different. We discuss established methods of managing patients and highlight new approaches.
