Carbon fiber-reinforced pedicle screws reduce artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging of patients with lumbar spondylodesis.

The study investigated whether the use of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK screw material (CF-PEEK) can reduce magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) artifact formation. Two consecutive groups of patients were treated for degenerative spinal disorders of the lumbar spine with dorsal transpedicular spinal fusion. The first group (n = 27) received titanium pedicle screws. The second group (n = 20) received CF-PEEK screws. All patients underwent an MRI assessment within the first four postoperative weeks. For each operated segment, the surface of the artifact-free vertebral body area was calculated as perc

Apoptosis in the lens anlage of the heritable lens aplastic mouse (lap mouse).

Adult homozygous lap mice show various eye abnormalities, such as aphakia, retinal disorganization, and dysplasia of the cornea and anterior chamber. In the fetal eye of a homozygous lap mouse, the lens placode seems to develop normally. However, the lens vesicle progresses abnormally to form a mass of cells without a cavity, and the mass vanishes soon afterward. We examined cell death in the lens anlage of this mutant. The lens anlagen of homozygous lap and normal mice from days 10 to 12 of gestation were observed by light microscopy after DNA end-labeling by immunohistochemistry and by trans

Etoposide pharmacokinetics in children: the development and prospective validation of a dosing equation.

Pharmacokinetic studies of etoposide administered at 100-200 mg/m2 to 33 children are described. Twenty-seven studies were performed in chil … with increasing AUC, whereas a marked increase in predictive error was seen for dosing according to body surface area. Dosing according to body surface area alone led to marked over- or underexposure to etoposide in 8 patients. Pharmacokinetic monitoring using the equation described would have identified these patients and permitted dose modification. This approach …

Effect of safety harness design on the pressures exerted on the user's body in the state of its suspension.

The presented studies concern the pressure of safety harnesses on the user's body in a state of its suspension. An anthropomorphic dummy was used for simulation of human behaviour in suspension. The test objects included four models of harnesses of different designs, equipped with attachment elements placed at the back and front of the human body. Pressure mapping sensors of 56 × 56 mm2 surface area and two-dimensional (2D) pressure mapping apparatus were used for the measurements. The parameters characterizing the pressures of the harness belts on the dummy surface were defined. The obtained

Body Composition of Infants With Biliary Atresia: Anthropometric Measurements and Computed Tomography-based Body Metrics.

OBJECTIVES: Biliary atresia (BA) causes neonatal cholestasis that requires hepatoportoenterostomy or liver transplantation (LT) for long-term survival. Nutritional optimization is necessary as sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity have been associated with adverse clinical outcome. Currently, mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) is considered the most accurate indicator. The aim of the study was to determine computed tomography (CT)-based body metrics in infants with BA and to evaluate its correlation with MUAC. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all BA infants below 2 years of age who underwent

Measurement of human body surface heat flux using a calorimetric sensor.

We have developed a calorimetric sensor that can perform local measurements of the heat flux transmitted by conduction between a human body and thermostat located inside the sensor. The sensor has a detection area of 2 × 2 cm2 and, in its current configuration, facilitates measurement with a resolution of 10 mW. In this paper, measurements of two healthy male subjects of different ages (24 and 60 years) are presented. We study the variation in the power dissipated by the human body surface as a function of time for a thermostat temperature of 28 °C. We also study the same power with thermostat

Scaling and relative size of the human, nonhuman ape, and baboon calcaneus.

Among human and nonhuman apes, calcaneal morphology exhibits significant variation that has been related to locomotor behavior. Due to its role in weight-bearing, however, both body size and locomotion may impact calcaneal morphology. Determining how calcaneal morphologies vary as a function of body size is thus vital to understanding calcaneal functional adaptation. Here, we study calcaneus allometry and relative size in humans (n = 120) and nonhuman primates (n = 278), analyzing these relationships in light of known locomotor behaviors. Twelve linear measures and three articular facet surfac

Contribution of skin thermal sensitivities of large body areas to sweating response.

The thermal sensitivity of different parts of the body was investigated by heating large areas of the body surface while the mean skin temperature calculated from Hardy and DuBois ' formula (1938) was always kept constant. The right arm sweating responses recorded under a local thermal clamp were related to changes in segmental skin temperatures of the different parts of the body. The results show that: 1) the various local peripheral signals are projected into integrating structures in the central nervous system; 2) the thermal sensitivity is greater for the head-and-trunk area in comparison

Firefighter uncompensable heat stress results in excessive upper body temperatures measured by infrared thermography: Implications for cooling strategies.

This research sought to evaluate the thermal zones of the upper body and firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE) immediately following uncompensable heat stress (0.03 °C increase/min). We hypothesized that the frontal portion of the head and the inside of the firefighter helmet would be the hottest as measured by infrared thermography. This hypothesis was due to previous research demonstrating that the head accounts for ∼8-10% of the body surface area, but it accounts for ∼20% of the overall body heat dissipation during moderate exercise. Twenty participants performed a 21-min graded t…

Genomic Prediction and Genome-Wide Association Studies for Productivity, Conformation and Heat Tolerance Traits in Tropical Smallholder Dairy Cows.

Genomic selection (GS) and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have not been investigated in Vietnamese dairy cattle, even for basic milk production traits, largely due to the scarcity of individual phenotype recording in smallholder dairy farms (SDFs). This study aimed to estimate heritability (h 2) and test the applicability of GS and GWAS for milk production, body conformation and novel heat tolerance traits using single test day phenotypic data. Thirty-two SDFs located in either the north (a lowland vs. a highland) or the south (a lowland vs. a highland) of Vietnam were each visited for
