BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can precipitate new-onset psychiatric symptoms or worsen existing psychiatric conditions. To elucidate specific mechanisms for this interaction, neuroimaging is often used to study both psychiatric conditions and TBI. This systematic review aims to synthesize the existing literature of neuroimaging findings among patients with anxiety after TBI.
METHODS: We conducted a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses-compliant literature search via PubMed (MEDLINE), PsychINFO, EMBASE, and Scopus databases before May, 2019. We included

Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) can occur after cardiac arrest, asphyxiation, carbon monoxide poisoning, and diffuse brain injury. While it is a major cause of mortality and morbidity, there is no consensus on its management. Therefore, I performed a literature review to analyze HIBI pathophysiology, clinical progression, imaging, treatment, and prognosis with a goal to deepen our understanding of best treatment and prognostication options. A search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Google scholar, EMBASE, and Crossref. The pathophysiology of HIBI consists of the primary insult due to cess

A 58-year-old male with untreated hypertension was found dead in his car after a traffic accident on his way to the office. Emergency head CT showed diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage at cerebral base. On autopsy examination, traumatic injuries were seen on his face and lower extremities. The skull was not fractured and there were no brain contusions except subscalp bleeding at the frontal head. The brain weighed 1510g and showed diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a rupture of the left vertebral artery (VA). Histopathological examination using serial step sections of every 0.1mm of the whole

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are at high risk of diffuse white matter injury and adverse neurodevelopmental outcome. The multiple hit hypothesis suggests that the risk of white matter injury increases with cumulative exposure to multiple perinatal risk factors. Our aim was to test this hypothesis in a large cohort of preterm infants using diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI).
METHODS: We studied 491 infants (52% male) without focal destructive brain lesions born at < 34 weeks, who underwent structural and dMRI at a specialist Neonatal Imaging Centre. The median (range) gestatio

The deep gray nuclei are paired interconnected gray nuclei comprising the basal ganglia and thalami. Injury to the deep gray nuclei secondary to hypoxic-ischemic injury is associated with poor short- and long-term clinical outcomes. The signal changes following hypoxic-ischemic injury are dynamic and evolve over a period of time from injury to resolution. Radiologically relevant events following hypoxic-ischemic injury include the onset of anaerobic metabolism immediately following hypoxic-ischemic injury, increase in cytotoxic edema followed by its resolution, and the onset and progression of

The generally held concept during the past several decades is that traumatic brain edema is predominately vasogenic emanating from the blood vessels subsequent to blood brain barrier compromise. Much of the experimental data has focused on cryogenic injury models where there clearly is a necrotic lesion surrounded by leaking vessels. However, in closed head injury where brain swelling remains a critical problem, the classification of the type of edema that develops is less clear. Most importantly, studies in the clinical setting have ruled out vascular engorgement as one potential mechanism an

Repetitive subconcussive head impacts (RSHI) are believed to induce sub-clinical brain injuries, potentially resulting in cumulative, long-term brain alterations. This study explores patterns of longitudinal brain white matter changes across sports with RSHI-exposure. A systematic literature search identified 22 datasets with longitudinal diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data. Four datasets were centrally pooled to perform uniform quality control and data preprocessing. A total of 131 non-concussed active athletes (American football, rugby, ice hockey; mean age: 20.06 ± 2.06 years) with ba

Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of long-term cognitive impairment, yet the mechanisms underlying recovery remain poorly understood. Neuroimaging methods such as diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) provide insight into micro- and macro-scale changes post-traumatic brain injury (TBI), but the relationships between regional cellular and functional alterations remain unclear. In this exploratory study, we conducted a longitudinal, multimodal neuroimaging analysis quantifying TBI-related pathologies in four biomarkers, na

We present a framework for along-tract analysis of white matter (WM) fiber bundles based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tractography. We introduce the novel concept of fiber-flux density for modeling fiber tracts' geometry, and combine it with diffusion-based measures to define vector descriptors called Fiber-Flux Diffusion Density (FFDD). The proposed model captures informative features of WM tracts at both the microscopic (diffusion-related) and macroscopic (geometry-related) scales, thus enabling improved sensitivity to subtle structural abnormalities that are not reflected by either

Cerebral fat embolism (CFE) causes the neurological involvement observed in fat embolism syndrome, which is a post-traumatic complication seen mostly after long bone fractures and usually presents 24-72 h after the injury. An early 80s female who sustained an isolated traumatic fracture of the left distal femur without dislocation was alert on admission but fell into a coma 55 min after the injury. Brain computed tomography showed no abnormalities. Brain magnetic resonance imaging was performed approximately 5 h after the accident, and diffusion-weighted images revealed hyperintense, dot-like

We present a case of acute hydrocephalus secondary to cervical spinal cord injury in a patient with diffuse ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). A 75-year-old male patient visited the emergency department with tetraparesis and spinal shock. Imaging studies showed cervical spinal cord injury with hemorrhage and diffuse OPLL from C1 to C4. We performed decompressive laminectomy and occipitocervical fusion. Two days after surgery, his mental status had deteriorated to drowsiness with dilatation of the right pupil. Findings on brain computed tomography revealed acute hydroce

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of death and disability throughout the world. A multifunctional peptide adrenomedullin (AM) has protective effects in the central nervous system. We evaluated AM in an animal model as a therapeutic agent that reduces brain damage after traumatic brain injury. A total of 36 rats was divided into 3 groups as sham, head trauma plus intraperitoneal (ip) saline, and head trauma plus adrenomedullin ip. The diffuse brain injury model of Marmarou et al. was used. Blood samples were taken from all groups at the 1st, 6th and 24th hours for analysis of TNF-α

The outcome of 109 patients with severe head injury was studied in relation to clinical and computed tomographic (CT) criteria on admission, after resuscitation. Age, Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) and state of pupils strongly correlated with outcome. The presence of hypothalamic disturbances, hypoxia and hypotension were associated with an adverse outcome. The CT indicators associated with poor outcome were perimesencephalic cistern (PMC) obliteration, subarachnoid haemorrhage, diffuse axonal injury and acute subdural haematoma. The prognostic value of midline shift and mass effect were influenced
